2012 is going to present so many opportunities to pretend to live in George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire universe, we're not sure you'll still have time to larp. We knew that after releasing the RTS, A Game of Thrones: Genesis, Cyanide Studios turned its focus to a Game of Thrones RPG to be published by Atlus. Now, USA Today reports Bigpoint is also working on a free-to-play MMO. Though the article doesn't specify, we'd assume it'll be browser-based like Bigpoint's Battlestar Gallactica game.

USA Today also brings word of a social networking, FarmVille-esque take on Game of Thrones, which is the one we're really excited about. Really. "The gold's not hot enough to kill anyone yet! Try pouring on someone's head again in 14 minutes, or pay 7 ThroneBux to speed it up!"

Backstabbing. Subterfuge. Bribes. Seduction. Secret alliances. These are all tasty elements that can sex-up any good old medieval tale. A Game of Thrones: Genesis sets itself apart from other fantasy real-time strategy offerings by placing a much greater gameplay emphasis on politicking and treacher...

A Game of Thrones: Genesis' literary goals are pretty auspicious: The game recounts a thousand years of history, filled with bloody conquests and backstabbing, that lead up to the A Song of Ice and Fire novels. You won't necessarily need to know a lot about the books or the cable TV show, but the game loses a lot of its appeal if you can't recognize the names of prominent families like Stark, Targaryen and Lannister.

Without knowing at least some background, the campaign will seem like a collection of loosely connected stories, rather than the sweeping, epic tale originally spun by George R.R. Martin. It may have some appeal to general fans of strategy, but Genesis is mainly geared towards letting fans experience an abridged look at the events that shaped Westeros.

There has been interest in Genesis, this game of A Game of Thrones, mostly because people like the source material, whether in book or telemotion format, but after a few hours of play I can confidently say that this is not the experience to do the license justice. An initially refreshing sense that I might be playing something boardgamey and diplomatically enthralling was soon replaced with a sense of almost complete apathy. And I tried, I really did.

And again! A not entirely industry-representative yet unquestionably fascinating/depressing look at what comprised the top ten PC game sales for Steam compared to UK retail over the last week. Will The Sims’ dominance of retail continue unabated? (Obviously). Will there be any surprise returns to the Steam top ten? (Yeah, actually). Read on to find out the answers to both these questions and more, as long as those questions concern the chart-placing of contemporary PC games. If you want to find out the answer to what the Queen had for breakfast this morning or where Muammar Gaddafi is hiding, I really cannot recommend reading the rest of this post.(more…)

A Game of Thrones: Genesis is set to drop Sept. 29, but first Cyanide Studio and Focus Home Interactive want you to watch a massive, half-naked blacksmith pound a hot sword and stroke The Reach in the above launch trailer. It also has dragons, if you even need that after the previous description.

From what I can gather, people waited decades for the most recent book in the Song of Ice and Fire series. In comparison, Cyanide Studios’ RTS take on Mr R R Martin’s world, A Game of Thrones: Genesis, has burst into existence with stunning alacrity. Screenshots have emerged, showing glowering men in armour and maps with recognisable landmarks on them, such as The Wall, which isn’t a prog rock album but an actual wall that’s covered with ice. I know that because I’ve read the first book. Now, just one week before release, there’s a trailer for the game. Watch it below.(more…)

If you've been left unsatisfied by all the honorable, upstanding strategy games that have come out over the past year, you should brace yourself for a healthy dose of deception later this month. Focus Home Interactive has announced that Cyanide Studios' first adaptation of George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series, A Game of Thrones - Genesis, will arrive on store shelves of the tangible and digital varieties on September 29.

If you haven't already consumed every single page of the aforementioned series of novels, you don't really have enough time to do so before the game comes out. Maybe you could watch the TV series! It's like a novel that bunch of famous people read for you.

We were ready to give Cyanide's A Game of Thrones: Genesis the "Most Disingenuously Named Game of the Year" award -- until this most recent batch of screenshots appeared in our inbox. We can now confirm that, yes, it is a game which contains at least one throne.

It’s International George R. R. Martin day today, of course, with the whole world taking a holiday to read his latest book, A Dance With Dragons, which incidentally is a terrible title. So while you’re wearing your A Song Of Ice And Fire t-shirt, petting your wolf cub, and waggling swords, you should also check out the new screenshots from Cyanide’s game based on the first book, A Game Of Thrones: Genesis.

Cyanide Studios, the French developers behind Blood Bowl and Pro Cycling Manager (I imagine them sat at their desks, stained with blood and sweat in equal measure) have just fired a salvo of intriguing new details on A Game of Thrones: Genesis, their real-time strategy game set in the world of George R. R. Martin’s wily, waspish fantasy novels. Looks like an ordinary RTS, right? Well, it turns out we can look forward to everything from bribery and ransoming to marraiges and assassinations, there’ll be a focus on backstabbery and even a need to hide your bastard sons. More after the jump.(more…)

Those who read the books already knew Game of Thrones was a big deal, but more recently a whole new audience was introduced to George R.R. These new screens from Cyanide's upcoming strategy release A Game of Thrones: Genesis show "the coast of Dorne where Queen Nymeria and her people landed, as well as the troops of House Tyrell confronting House Lannister," which will be exciting to ... 100 percent of the people still reading.

Good news for fans of Westeros and its inhabitants -- not only does Cyanide have an RTS based on George R.R. Martin's fantasy series coming out, but apparently the Paris-based developer is also working on an RPG set in the world of the Song of Ice and Fire. French site FactorNews got a look at the game in development, and it sounds like just the thing to get your dire wolf howling.

The title is supposed to play out around the book's events rather than follow them, but still follows the conventions of seeing various points of view. Players will start out as a brother of the Night Watch up at the Wall, then move on to play as Alester Sarwyck, a Red Priest returning to the kingdom after being exiled for 15 years across the Narrow Sea. Gameplay is described as a mix of The Witcher and other pseudo-turn-based RPGs, with players choosing skills and directing traffic in the midst of real-time battle. Cyanide is aiming for a release on both PC and consoles.

It all sounds awesome -- but A Game of Thrones: The RPG (working title) isn't planned to see the light of day any time before Martin's Dance with Dragons hits bookstores. If Cyanide delivers everything it is promising in this preview, we'd be willing to pull a Jaime Lannister and kill a king just to get a copy of it.

One by one, the constituent elements of Cyanide's RTS adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire are being revealed. With today's screens, we know A Game of Thrones: Genesis will have plenty of ice -- but where's all the fire? Now that we think about it, where's all the singing?

It's been half a year since Cyanide revealed early concept art for its adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Today, publisher Focus Home Interactive revealed the first pair of screenshots from the series first outing, A Game of Thrones: Genesis, giving us a look at what the action therein will actually look like. Apparently, it's going to feature large, scary dragons. And villagers. And cottages which appear to enjoy being burned to the ground, signifying their approval with an olde-timey thumbs up placard. We think that's what's going on, there.

The publisher also revealed a few scant details about the title -- namely, that it will be a real-time strategy affair, with multiplayer support for up to eight different combatants. Victory can be claimed through force, diplomacy or subterfuge -- though, we imagine we'll be leaning on a healthy diet of all three.
