EA 'n 38 Studios have been showing Reckoning (Kingdoms a Amalur) for more than nine months now, 'n I still don't think they've figured out how t' explain what it be.

We've heard comparisons t' God a War 'n character action games because a it be combat system. We've heard comparisons t' the Fable series by virtue a it be character customization 'n imagery, 'n I've even heard Skyrim 'n Oblivion comparisons thrown in there for good measure because a the size a the world, 'n because a Ken Rolston's involvement.

But Reckoning (Kingdoms a Amalur - hey, EA, 38, can we talk about that naming convention some time?) isn't any a those things at all. There be comparisons t' be made though. Namely t' Secret a Mana 'n Diablo II.

No, really. ye pillage a troll. Specifically, a 12.5" tall "Prismere Troll" statuette designed by McFarlane Toys, with the purchase a two a the newly announced Special Editions a Kingdoms a Amalur: Reckoning.

In all, there be three levels a specialness. For $80, ye pillage a parchment map, a seven-piece dice set, replicas a the 40 "Destiny Cards" found in the game, a soundtrack, 'n DLC weapons that increase XP gained from "Fate Shift Kills." The $200 "Collector's Edition" adds the aforementioned troll 'n a concept art lithograph signed by Ken Rolston. This edition be limited t' 700 units.

For the person who be really sure Reckoning be his or the wench jam (despite never having played it), there's the $275 Signature Edition. That has all the other stuff, but the troll be "signed by Todd McFarlane, R.A. Salvatore or Curt Schilling," 'n ye pillage a custom sketch by Todd McFarlane. There be only 300 a these t' hand out.

All three be available for pre-order here. If ye're a really true fan, a course, ye'll buy one a each. Just saying.

I’m writing this about Kingdoms a Amalur: Reckoning while sat on the train on the way t' go play a few hours a Skyrim, which means I’m suffering more than the usual degree a mental discombobulation. Which open world be which? Which be the one with the Red Legion? Which be the one where I be battling rock trolls atop wobbly rope bridges? Which be the one where I be compared t' a god? (Oh yeah, that one’s both a ‘em.) That’s the thing with vast, free-form RPGs: there’s only so much room in yer head. Usually we only have one at a time t' contend with, but 38 Studios’ surprisingly sandbox roleplayer be due t' arrive at about the time we’ll have finished climbing Skyrim’s icy mountains 'n be ready for something else. If all goes t' plan, we’re going t' be spoilt for choice.

it be hard not t' be skeptical about Kingdoms a Amalur: Reckoning. An RPG, by known strategy developer Big vast Games, that be rejiggered t' fit into Curt Schilling's 38 Studios long-in-development MMO's universe after the developer's acquisition. In our March preview a the game at GDC we said that the developer "might just pull this off." Now, after playing Reckoning at Gamescom, I have t' say that Big vast Games could exceed expectations when the game launches February 7.

During me demo with Reckoning I played as a mage 'n warrior, the two had distinct animations, but at their core be similar when it came t' the rules a combat. Both characters I tried be level 20, so I be dropped right into a high-level character without much training. It wasn't really a problem as the combat system be quite intuitive. If ye've played Batman: Arkham Asylum, Bayonetta or Fable, ye'll easily pick up the fantastical warfare.
