#angrybirds The future of manned space flight may be uncertain—private, federal, aliens?— but somehow or another, the Angry Birds have vowed to escape Earth's gravity. The beginning of their journey started appropriately enough at the Space Needle in Seattle, where development studio Rovio had a giant version of their rotund redbird tethered to the iconic building. Angry Birds Space is officially available for Android, iOS, PC and Mac today, and to celebrate, Rovio and T-Mobile constructed a 300-foot slingshot, complete with Angry Bird, mounted on the Seattle Space Needle. Today, starting at 10 a.m. PST, Rovio is hosting an Angry Birds Space launch party -- with Angry Birds cupcakes! -- at the Space Needle.

Rovio calls the slingshot an "art installation," but we see what's really going on here: interstellar travel and a public, press-heavy reveal of a monstrous weapon -- it's the space race all over again. This time, it's angry.

#angrybirds They're called eggsteroids now, okay? Like lots of other things in the latest version of Rovio's hit mobile franchise, the shiny collectibles in Angry Birds Space have changed. The golden orbs open up black holes that teleport you to secret levels that contain tributes to old-school games like Space Invaders, Breakout and Super Mario Brothers. More »

#angrybirds Here's the first official trailer for the first proper sequel to Angry Birds, called Angry Birds: Space. They don't look that angry, do they? More like they're just...mildly upset. A little cranky. Guess that's what billions of dollars does to an animal. More »

#angrybirds When you think about it, the Angry Birds are like the collectible guns of a first-person shooter. Once you unlock them, each type does something different. So, if the titular avians of Rovio's ubiquitous mobile hit are weapons in their own war, the upcoming Angry Birds Space will be increasing their arsenal with a few all-new squawkers. More »

#angrybirds While Rovio's already revealed the next galactic entry in their super-successful Angry Birds franchise, there's still room for them to grow as a business. Right now, the Finnish compnay's an one-property entity and even if that property is a ubiquitous and popular as Angry Birds, they're still at risk if bird-flinging is all they do. If Angry Birds proves to be a fad, then Rovio's own house will come crumbling down. More »

In space, no one can hear you fling. Rovio's next title is indeed another Angry Birds game, because why not? Angry Birds Space is, presumably, Angry Birds in space.

The official site for Angry Birds Space suggests a March 22 launch. Outside of the teaser trailer above and the site, that's all we have to go on right now. But it's not like you needed more, right? We're pretty sure this'll just be more Angry Birds.

Rovio, the people sprinkling stale bread behind Angry Birds, received the Property of the Year prize at the 12th annual Toy of the Year awards (yeah, that's totally a thing). Rovio won based on the massive amount of Angry Birds physical merchandise it's released over the past two years, which includes plush toys, backpacks, clothing, phone cases and bacon. OK, not bacon, but Rovio has branded almost every other item imaginable.

"Our physical goods business has great momentum just now," Ville Heijari, Rovio's VP of franchise development, told Develop. "It's especially interesting to see many app and social game devs emulate the merchandising strategy that Rovio has been pushing with Angry Birds for the last two years."

Mirroring the plans of every bitter, lonely soul the world over, Rovio will be filling Facebook with anger come Valentine's Day. Granted, Rovio's February 14 release of Angry Birds for the social-networking site will be quite a bit different from the vitriolic bile we'll be spewing as a projection of our own debilitating loneliness, but both activities do involve throwing things and impassioned rants about how things didn't go as planned.

In addition to leaderboard support, the Facebook version of Rovio's darling will feature "higher quality animation" to take advantage of the game's full-screen capabilities. It will also include power-ups, which come in familiar bird flavors as well as more divine abilities, such as triggering earthquakes on command. Power-ups can either be earned in-game or purchased for $0.99, but you'll never be able to buy your way back into her heart. Please come back, Susan.

Rovio had a record 6.5 million downloads for Angry Birds on Christmas Day 2011. No, that's not excatly mind-blowing when compared to the hundreds of millions of times the avian avenger sim has been downloaded, but as AllThingsD points out those sales are nearly equivalent to the number of smartphone activations estimated to have happened over Christmas.

The 6.5 million total is a combination of Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio, which are available as paid or free downloads depending on platform. The download numbers have also tripled since last year, when Rovio revealed the franchise saw two million downloads.

Rovio may go public in 2012 with its sky-high valuation, even if analysts are standing by the side shaking their heads.

Finnish school for agitated ornithological research mobile mogul Rovio may be looking to capitalize on its world-wide brand recognition and ridiculous, un-ending revenue stream by listing its stock on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2013, assuming the world still exists in 2013, that is.

The financial liquidity inherent in Asia's increasingly prosperous business climate makes for an excellent pro-IPO opportunity, according to Finnish outlet Tekniikka & Talous. While no official announcements have been made as of yet, an IPO in Rovio's immediate future makes sense considering that the developer is currently valued between $2.6 and $9.1 billion and recently turned down $2.25 billion from Zynga.

Angry Birds will turn two on Sunday, December 11, and publisher Rovio is celebrating with an update to the title that's sent its company valuation into the gaping maw of madness.

The Angry Birds "Happy Birdday" update will include 15 birthday cake levels, new menus and graphics, along with all episodes being unlocked. The update goes live Sunday for iOS, with "other platforms coming soon."

In the States, book emporium Barnes & Noble will hold special giveaways from 11AM to 3PM, with "select stores" holding "additional activities such as coloring or high score contests, design your own Angry Birds character, Angry Birds parades and guessing games." Call your local store for more details. Toys 'R' Us will also have 25 percent off Angry Birds plushies and an extra level code for Angry Birds Google Chrome. There will also be events at international retail locations in the UK and Japan.

Turns out it takes more than repeated blunt force trauma to the head to take down an Angry Bird. Nope, it takes smarts, something that the wordy Scribblenauts Remix has in abundance. As of this writing, the puzzler has overtaken Angry Birds and occupies the number one spot on the iTunes App Store.

Of course, while we're sure braininess helps, that recent $0.99 discount might have had something to do with it too.
