Never before has a European PSN update been so violent. Section 8: Prejudice tasks you with killing heavily armored skydivers. Dead Block is all about re-killing the walking dead with a series of homebrewed traps. Finally, 3D Ultra Mini Golf Adventures just wants you to kill pars with really, really good putts. Kind of. That's kind of what it wants you to do.

Timegate's undeniably beefy multiplayer-centric shooter Section 8: Prejudice has been racking up kills on Xbox Live Arcade since late April. In a little under two weeks, PS3 owners will get to see what all the fuss is about (hint: skydiving), as PlayStation Blog just announced the downloadable, $15 title will touch down on PSN July 26 in North America, and July 27 in Europe.

To help jump-start the community's growth on the new platform, Timegate is handing out the Blitz Armor Pack and Overdrive Map Pack to anyone who grabs the game during its first week on PSN. What's more, the first 1,000 PlayStation Plus users to download the title will receive in-game Hunter Armor, as well as a free download of the original Section 8. You're essentially doubling your bang for your buck, and by "bang," we mean "whoosh," because that's the sound you make when you're skydiving.

It’s been a long time coming, but Dropping, Jetpacks, Overdriving, Deployables, and every other kick-ass Section 8: Prejudice feature are making their way to the PlayStation Network starting July 26th in North America for only $14.99 and July 27th for our European friends for £12,99. While it was a difficult decision to delay the PS3 release for three months, we knew it would be worth the wait in order to take the time to optimize the game for the platform. We’ve also added new content to the PS3 version, including two additional multiplayer game modes, Assault and Skirmish, as well as exclusive content for PlayStation Plus subscribers. If you’re not a PlayStation Plus member, no worries, we have some free content for you too!

  • For the first week, anyone who purchases Section 8: Prejudice on the PlayStation Network will receive the Blitz Armor Pack and Overdrive Map Pack for free! This includes two armor skins, early unlocks, and two additional multiplayer maps.
  • The first 1000 PlayStation Plus subscribers to purchase Section 8: Prejudice will receive the exclusive in-game Hunter Armor as well as a free copy of the original Section 8.

Of course, all the free content we are offering during launch week is just a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of content in the base game. Section 8: Prejudice features a five-hour story-driven campaign, four multiplayer game modes (all of which offer offline bot support), Dynamic Combat Missions, highly customizable weapon and equipment loadouts, deep level progression and unlockable content systems, and last but not least, jetpacks (I probably should have put that at the top of the list). Below is a more detailed look at the various game modes PS3 players will encounter in Section 8: Prejudice.

5933930155_3cb8dcce7a_z.jpg

Campaign: The campaign follows 8th Armored Infantry, or Section 8, as they defend the Earth against the tyrannical Arm of Orion. In the campaign, you play as Captain Alexander Corde, the leader of an elite group of soldiers, and throughout the campaign you learn more about Alexander Corde, Section 8, and the mysterious Arm of Orion.

Conquest: Conquest is a multiplayer mode where you and up to 32 players play as either 8th Armored Infantry or the Arm of Orion and you fight for control of the battlefield. Each team competes to complete objectives and score Victory Points (VP). When one team earns enough VP to meet the Victory Point goal, they are victorious and the enemy team is defeated.

To earn victory points, players must capture and hold control points. Victory Points are awarded at fixed intervals for each Control Point your team holds. Teams can also earn Victory Points by completing Dynamic Combat Missions (DCMs). There are a number of DCMs that occur during a match. Successful completion of a DCM provides significant Victory Points that can turn the tide of battle.

Skirmish (NEW!): Similar to Conquest, Skirmish is a multiplayer mode where you and up to 32 players compete in a Team-versus-team death match where Control Points cannot be captured and Victory Points are awarded for kills and completed Dynamic Combat Missions.

Assault: Assault is a team-versus-team game mode where teams race to capture all Control Points in the fastest time. While in the attack round, players must work together to capture all control points. During the defense round, players defend their bases for as long as possible. It’s a fast-paced mode that encourages close cooperation with your team and unwavering focus on the goal of capturing or defending the base!

Swarm: In Swarm, you and three other friends defend a single Control Point against an overwhelming number of computer-controlled Arm of Orion enemy units. To attain victory, your team must protect the Control Point from being captured by the enemy before the 15 minute time limit is reached.

Swarm Mode consists of a limited number of enemy waves. As soon as you capture the neutral Control Point, the first wave begins. Every five minutes, an Airstrike will bombard the enemy, eliminating them until the next wave begins.

Again, we’d like to extend a huge thank you to the PlayStation community for patiently waiting for Section 8: Prejudice. We are extremely excited to share this game with everyone, and hope that players enjoy all the free content!

TimeGate Studios has introduced a new map pack and game mode coming to Section 8: Prejudice later this month. The Frontier Colonies Map Pack will be out on July 13 on Xbox 360 and PC for 320 Microsoft Points/$3.99, and will bring Desolation, a desert map featuring the ruins of a previous colonization, and Overseer, which offers fighting through military facilities in a "habitable forest valley." Both of those maps will be available for all game modes.

They'll also support the new Skirmish mode, which will arrive for free later this summer. Skirmish mode plays like Team Deathmatch, but all of that killing is taking place while you're also earning Victory points for completing missions. Control Points are out of the game, however, and players will need to adjust as needed. Sounds interesting -- TimeGate promises more info on that mode and a release of the map pack on PSN coming soon.

I love it when people do stuff like this. In order to celebrate the first eleven weeks (because that’s a nice round number?) of man-death in their downloadable jetpackathon, Section 8: Prejudice, TimeGate have compiled an infographic of their stats pulled from Gamespy. It’s totally disposable, and pure marketing guff, but kind of fun in a “it only took twenty million-man hours to build the Panama Canal and that’s how much time we sink into Windows Minesweeper every day” sort of way. We should totally do an RPS infographic: “57,123,119 Angry Men Angered in the first six months…”

Check it out below.(more…)

After the RPS Hivemind failed to get everything we were hoping for from Brink, there was a collective sense that we should instead spend some quality time with the more bombastic Section 8: Prejudice. We haven’t actually done that yet, but this weekend’s looking like a great time to start. The game’s just received a patch balancing and smoothing things out (full notes here), and to celebrate the release of the Overdrive map pack this weekend will see players earning double XP. If you can handle a hot drop from orbit, then just maybe you can handle this Section 8: Prejudice news bomb. First, the Overdrive Map Pack is now available for $4 Xbox 360 and $4.49 on Games for Windows Live. In celebration of the two new maps, Prejudice players can enjoy a double XP weekend starting on Friday at 1AM EST and ending on Monday at 1AM EST.

Second, a patch has been delivered to both versions of the game, tweaking or fixing several stability and gameplay issues. Players will be happy to hear that several crashes have been fixed and that autobalance will now "more aggressively" attempt to places players with their friends during matches. Head over to the TimeGate forums for the full patch notes and find a new trailer after the break.

Are you familiar with the nooks, crannies and sweet, skydiveable air above each of the maps included in TimeGate Studios' beefy downloadable shooter, Section 8: Prejudice? Next Tuesday, June 1, the game will receive the Overdrive Map Pack, a bundle which includes two new maps which will be playable in all game modes: A magma-covered battlefield known as Abaddon, and a decidedly colder frozen wasteland called Sky Dock.

The two new maps will launch on Xbox Live Marketplace and Games for Windows Marketplace for 320 Microsoft Points ($3.99). Sounds like a fair price for the raw, visceral thrill of plummeting into a pool of volcanic rock. Yes, that's not the smartest strategic move, but c'mon.

The players of Section 8: Prejudice have smashed the requisite ten million online kills, unlocking themselves Assault Mode, a new game type in which one team tries to capture points spread across the map and the other has to stop them. Timegate’s party line on it is as follows- “a fast-paced mode that encourages close cooperation with your team and unwavering focus on the goal of capturing or defending the base!” Holy shit! That sounds way more exciting than what I said. TimeGate has announced that players across the PC and Xbox 360 versions of Section 8: Prejudice have reached the combined goal of 10 million in-game kills, thus unlocking the new Assault Mode. The objective-based gametype is now available to all players on both versions of the game. In Assault, the attacking team tries to capture all designated control points on a map, while the defending team attempts to hold onto them for as long as possible.

TimeGate has also announced plans for an Xbox Live Game with Developers session this Sunday, May 15 from 5-8PM ET. Head over to the Xbox.com events page for details.

To coincide with the launch of the PC version of Section 8: Prejudice, TimeGate has announced a new community objective for both PC and Xbox 360 players. A kill counter has been launched on the Prejudice website tracking online kills across both versions of the game. Once the counter reaches a million -- which should happen soon, given it's already over 700,000 -- the new Assault mode will be unlocked.

In Assault mode, the attacking team attempts to capture all control points on the map. The defending team, naturally, tries to hold off the attackers as long as it can. The new mode will be free to both PC and Xbox 360 players once it is unlocked.

Section 8: Prejudice is an underdog story a small developer (in this case, Timegate Studios) trying to fulfill the promise of its original idea while making the transition from retail to budget downloadable title. It has a cool hook in its "soldiers fired from a space cannon" premise. It brings a retail title's worth of modes and content to a budget title. The pieces are all there. But Section 8: Prejudice can't seem to fit them together into something more than sort-of interesting...

Science fiction FPS Section 8: Prejudice is finally out on PC today, for the slim price of $15. I’ve had a go at the single player campaign this week, which is a few hours long and encompasses most of what you’ll find in the multiplayer, while still being very much a scripted story sequence (as opposed to the pseudo-multiplayer single-player of the original.) It’s okay. I’ve not yet bothered with multiplayer, since we really need servers and PC community to be live and playing to make any judgement about it. As such I’ll say more about Prejudice in a few days time. What we can say now, however, is that TimeGate have announced a new mode “Assault”, which will unlock once the game sees 10-million online kills. Assault is apparently a race to capture the control points in the fastest time, with one team defending and ther other attacking. Since it’s already been out of Xbox for a while no, the kill-counter already reads six million, so I don’t think that new mode will too far away.

One of the only knocks we gave Section 8: Prejudice regarded its matchmaking system. Specifically, our review mentioned the game's lack of a party system and the general difficulty of playing with Xbox Live friends online. Apparently ours wasn't the only complaint, as TimeGate has addressed community feedback with a new title update.

While the new update won't add a party system to the game, we've been informed by TimeGate that "servers are more likely to try to put friends or Xbox LIVE Party members together during auto-balancing." Furthermore, ranked Swarm matches will now only require two human players instead of four.

Additional fixes were also applied to usability, dedicated servers and a pair of crashing issues. See the full patch notes after the break.
