Yesterday, we got an e-mail from a Kotaku reader named Jacob. He said he was bummed out. See, he really wants to play Phantasy Star Online 2, the free-to-play online RPG that was released in Japan last year, but he can't, because it's not out in the West, and publisher Sega hasn't told anyone what's going on. Last year, Sega announced that Phantasy Star Online 2 would get an English release in early 2013. Then they said it had been delayed. Fans hoped they'd say something at E3, but the trade show went by without a word. So I reached out to Sega to ask what's up. Here's the statement they sent me: SEGA can officially confirm that PS02 has been delayed. We don’t have any specifics but will update everyone as soon as there are more details to share. This, as you may recall, is the exact same statement that Sega gave to media outlets three months ago. At least "delayed" implies that it's still happening. Maybe there are licensing issues, as sometimes happens with these things. In the meantime, at least you can get the best Phantasy Star—Phantasy Star IV—on Steam.

Phantasy Star Online 2 has 1 million registered users in Japan, Sega today announced. Considering the online RPG has yet to reach Western shores, it's an impressive figure. Having said that, registration stats aren't the best indicator of active players; in July Sega announced 730,000 registrations along with a peak concurrent user number of 91,513.

To celebrate the milestone, Sega is giving away prizes to 100 lucky players clocking in between October 17 and November 7. Up for grabs are tickets to the Phantasy Star Series 25th Anniversary Concert, 25th Anniversary Sound Collection CDs, signed posters, and commemorative t-shirts. Two extra players will also win a Alienware M14x laptop with a special PSO2 design.

#freetoplay Over the past few weeks, we here at Kotaku East have taken a look at several of Japan's newest free-to-play titles. First was Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation, a PS3 third-person shooter that was based around a six versus six game of capture the points. Second was the Vita title Samurai and Dragons, which mixed co-op dungeon crawling with 4X strategy gameplay. The final title was Phantasy Star Online 2, a typical MMORPG on the PC and sequel to Phantasy Star Online—the progenitor of the free-to-play model. More »

#importpreview These days the net is overflowing with free-to-play MMORPGs. But even before free-to-play MMORPGs were a thing, there was Phantasy Star Online. This online-RPG graced consoles and PCs alike in the early 2000s and proved to be the most popular game of its kind in Japan (until Final Fantasy XI hit stores in 2002). Now, over a decade later, Sega has brought out a full blown sequel in Phantasy Star Online 2. But does this sequel have the magic of the original or is it just another forgettable free-to-play MMO? I have no idea what to expect from Phantasy Star Online 2. The original sort-of-Diablo-ish monster mash delighted a bright-eyed, bushy tailed (I’ve since had that surgically removed) version of me during the Dreamcast days, but times have changed – especially in MMOtopia. Even so, for better or worse, many of PSO’s longtime staples still seem to be in place here, so we’re looking at randomized dungeons, combo-based combat, and heaps of sci-fi-themed loot. I will, however, soon have the chance to render a verdict without revealing to Japan that their infants can out-speak a college-educated American. Yep: Sega’s finally seen fit to peg Phantasy Star Online 2 with an “early 2013″ release in the US and Europe. There’s a mystifyingly parkour-packed trailer after the break.

Well that didn't take long. Actually, maybe it's taking too long, depending on which side of the announcement you look at. After a brief open beta and a full-scale rollout in Japan last week, Sega has announced that its free-to-play action-RPG, Phantasy Star Online 2, will be coming to North America and Europe in 2013. That's the part that might be taking a bit too long.

In case you haven't seen any of the video we've been running, it's been relatively easy to get into the Japanese version of the game, despite the language barrier. In fact, it's starting to seem like foreigners are absolutely flooding Sega's servers, as the agreed-upon servers and lobbies where English-speakers congregate seem to be getting absolutely packed. This has led to a bit of server maintenance as Sega attempts to rejigger the ship and block system a bit to take some of the rush off. Of course, it's not just English speakers that are filling up the game. The first five ships (servers, or "shards" if you want to be a jerk about it) aren't accepting any new character creation, though that's said to be a temporary restriction. Generally speaking, the game's servers have been holding up pretty well under the load.

It'll be interesting to see how Sega handles the English-language version of the game. Will North American players have access to the Japanese servers? Or will they be split off? If they're split, will that lead to a situation where new content debuts first on the Japanese servers and then eventually trickles over to the English servers? The PSO franchise has sort of a spotty past when it comes to bringing all of its Japanese content over to the other servers, after all. Will the slightly-higher-than-they-should-be prices of items and character creation passes see any adjustments when they leave Japan? Will I be able to continue to use the RAcast that I've already put 40 hours into, or is he stuck on the Japanese servers forever? That's the sort of stuff I'm left wondering about, but these are questions Sega probably won't be prepared to answer until it gets a little bit closer to launch.

It's also worth noting that Sega's announcement only covers the PC version of the game. Some form of the game is also scheduled to appear on Vita, iPhone, and Android.

That Phantasy Star Online 2 character creator we caught wind of back in March is now online; ready and waiting to be downloaded, unzipped and utilized to forge a character you'll probably never use if you don't import it or live outside Japan.

The character creator can be downloaded by hittin' the source link below, and since it's in Japanese you'll need a working knowledge of Nippon's native tongue to use it. Or, alternatively, you can use this handy guide from the folks at Phantasy Star Fan Blog. Just, you know, don't get too attached once you've made your character.

On April 5, PC gamers will be able to indulge any cautious optimism they may have about Phantasy Star Online 2 with a character creation demo. Of course, it'll be in Japanese, but we don't anticipate too many problems adjusting hair color on a slider.

That'll be open to all; a beta test held later in April will be capped at 100,000 participants. It might be less exciting to build a character and then not do anything with it, but it's more exciting than being fully shut out of the game.

Sega has announced that their upcoming return to majestic sci-fi action fantasy, Phantasy Star Online 2, has been delayed into 2012, reports Siliconera. The purpose of the delay, according to producer Satoshi Sakai, is to address gameplay issues brought to light by user feedback submitted after the conclusion of this summer's alpha testing.

A second alpha test will be conducted some time during the first part of next year; returning alpha testers will be joined by new recruits in order to evaluate the changes made based on their feedback. Delays can be a double-edged sword, but when a company specifically cites addressing user feedback as a delay's justification, that's usually a good sign.

Not that any of us will ever actually get to play it, mind you. After all, it is a Japanese exclusive.

[Thanks, Mike!]

Phantasy Star Online hit some kind of magical sweet spot back in 2000. Though its spinoffs and followups kept much of the formula from that release, there was always something that felt off about them, and prevented some fans (like me) from getting fully into them.

It turns out that maybe those games were hewing too closely to the first PSO, because the new Phantasy Star Online 2 feels significantly different from its predecessors in action, and seems to have paradoxically recaptured the PSO excitement by doing so. It definitely hits all the right notes, but the mechanics have actually been upgraded. Can you believe it? Of course, the bummer about this is that it's a currently Japan-only, PC-only game.

Phantasy Star Online 2 has a pretty big presence at Sega's TGS booth this year, though perhaps not quite as big as the giant Rappy patrolling the display. The goofy bird, something of a mascot for the series, dances with glee for all who pass by, Joystiq staff included. We considered slaying it - hoping for an epic loot drop, of course - but then we thought we'd rather not be arrested.

The alpha test for Phantasy Star Online 2 will begin in August -- but before you get too excited, we should tell you that the participants for the Japan-only test have already been chosen. Non-alpha players will get a chance to try it out at Tokyo Game Show this year, after what we're guessing will be one of the longest lines at the show.

Even if you won't benefit from either of those opportunities, you can see the new PC game right here, in this new trailer. It pretty much hits all the PSO nostalgia notes, with some nice additions like 12-player areas (three four-player parties playing together), some kind of third-person shooter-style shooting controls, and, yes, jumping.
