#tombraider As we've seen in trailers going back to E3, Lara Croft gets the crap beat out of her trying to escape from the bandits' camp in the Tomb Raider reboot, though to be fair, she gives as good as she gets. That must have been on the mind of whoever came up with this design for a Tomb Raider special edition controller, because it looks worn the hell out. More »

You probably haven't spent enough money today. Yes, even though you got a late start and snatched up the games of yesterday's Steam sale today, there are still 36 hours of wallet plundering left. Today is no different and you are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. Just give in already.

Day 14 of the Steam sale offers the Tomb Raider franchise for $15, The Painkiller games for 50 - 75 percent off (including the complete pack for $20), Magicka for $2.50, the Sniper Elite franchise pack for $13.75, Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition for $20 and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 for 75 percent off, at just $2.50 a pop.

Feel the financial burn.

Injured. Scattered. Hunted. Shipwrecked on an island off the coast of Japan, Lara Croft began armed with nothing more than her wits and will to live. Forced to forage for food and defend herself from hostile natives, Lara is forever changed when her friends are captured and she realizes she is the only one who can save them. Pushed to the limits of human fortitude, Lara knows that if she doesn’t survive, none of them will. Watch Lara transition from “survival” to “Survivor” in our new trailer.

Lara Croft won't be swimming in next year's Tomb Raider

Global Brand Director for Crystal Dynamics, Karl Stewart, did a quick Q&A session on the official Tomb Raider twitter account this morning, and revealed an interesting design decision that will affect fans of aquatic exploration. The Tomb Raider reboot won't have any underwater shenanigans during gameplay - though not because the new Lara Croft has forgotten how to swim, thankfully.

Video game characters often have issues with the backstroke; Grand Theft Auto: Vice City protagonist Tommy Vercetti could famously survive gunshots, but wouldn't last more than a second in waist-deep water. In contrast, some of our fondest memories of Lara Croft involve diving through secret, watery passages.

Stewart said we'll see more about the game's other traversal gameplay soon, leading up to Tomb Raider's release in March next year.

Editorial: The Pre-Order Heist

Over the last few years we’ve seen the pre-order become a central aspect of gaming. Heavily relied upon by both major publishers and the smallest indies, more people than ever are paying for their games long before they’re even finished. And with Kickstarter and its crowd-funding sisters, the matter’s become even more complex and nuanced. Shops tend to so massively over-stock on major console releases that there’s no real need to bagsy a copy, while PC games are of course infinitely available via digital channels. And yet pre-ordering games is a bigger thing than ever before. Why’s that, eh?

Time was you could loudly declare yourself for or against the concept – now it’s a subject that requires a little more thought. I’ve given it some below.
