In the latest of our series of interviews with MMO creators, big and little, we go back to last year’s best MMO, Rift. We saw it as a mechanically-experimental game that had stuck to a safe fantasy MMO formula. Our three interviewees are Chief Creative Officer Scott Hartsman, design Producer Hal Hanlin and Producer Adam Gershowitz. Let’s see how they see themselves now… (more…)

It continually amazes me how often Trion Worlds adds to Rift, its MMO. Since the game's launch in March this year we've seen five full-fledged content updates, and the sixth, Ember Isle, is on the way. It looks to be the largest yet, too. Patch 1.6, Ember Isle, is adding an entire new zone, new dyna...

When did we last write about Trion’s MMO Rift? Oh, May. Just two months after it launched. Whoopsie. Well, fortunately Trion have put out a video showing how the game’s grown over the last seven months. It’s jolly dramatic, and conveys both that Rift is holding its own against the big-boy competition, and that for all the talk of freeform progression in other respects it’s holding fast to genre convention. #trion Imagine the lovechild that would emerge from the coupling of, say, Epic's Gears of War and Zynga's Adventure World. You'd get all the gritty action and polished mechanics of a AAA game buoyed by a constant stream of updates and content. Daddy's eyes and mommy's brains, so to speak. And sequels? With a back-end where developers could create and respond to a game's community much faster than is currently possible, they'd become a thing of the past. More »

Rift players know better than anyone how frequently Trion Worlds patches their MMO, and just how large the patches are. Each new patch to date has not only included new raids, dungeons and player-versus-player content, but have also come with ongoing world events that push the story of Rift forward and give players of all levels more to do. Patch 1.5, Ashes of History, is no different...

Rift appears to be one of the only recent title to take a modicum of wind out of World of Warcraft's sails. It makes sense, then, that Trion would respond to WoW's new free-to-play mode with an offer of its own: namely, the temporary markdown on the Rift client to a measly $4.99.

For a week, anyway. There’s a 7-day trial up on the main Rift site, which allows you to play the dimension-bleeding fantasy MMO for no pennies. I’ve still not got around to dabbling, but I understand from Dan’s review, and also from a few of you lot who are playing, that it’s one of the more interesting takes on the MMO business of late (despite some issues with the big public events…)

Anyway, go take a look!
