#theelderscrolls "Fus Roh Dah", the iconic shout from Skyrim that sends things flying across rooms like nobody's business, has become the most popular non-meme saying to come out of the game. So, naturally, its creators are looking to lock down their ownership of the slogan. More »

#skyrim Look, a hilarious and well-done Skyrim video that also does not reference wounded joints or fus ro dah! They do exist, you know, and now there's another—an outstanding goof on looting dead bodies, sometimes before they hit the ground, sometimes before they're even dead bodies. More »

Hoarders pulls off a nifty trick, allowing viewers to feel sad for the mental issues experienced by the show's subjects while simultaneously feeling a little better about themselves. Skyrim Hoarders, however, hits a little too close to home. Think about it, do you really need 27 iron daggers?

Previously: Part One and Two of our Skyrim modding guide.

My other posts sort of circle-strafe around the crazier ideas that modders have had with Skyrim. Instead we very calmly patched a few holes, and then we respectfully accepted their help to rework the world a bit. It’s taken me a while to have the courage to look at those majestic mountains, curls of cloud hanging off like cotton on the breeze, and say to myself: we need some My Little Pony weapons. I am sorry, Bethesda. Some of the things here are silly, but I can’t help myself. You’ve made such a serious world that, well, there needs to be some fun. Now it’s not going to be a pile of garish nonsense, although one or two will be a bit odd. I’m really just looking at mods that make the world or playing in it a bit more interesting and fun. This collection in a little bit different: fun is not a theme that’s easily quantified, and as such they’re somewhat all over the place and a bit more personalised.(more…)

I know the setting of Skyrim is a broken world, tearing itself in apart in a civil war while giant death beasts roam the sky, but I’m waiting for a romantic comedy machinima set in Whiterun. There’s so much ‘war this and death that’ that it could use a little levity. The Siege Of Markarth is well made death this and war that, to be fair. 8 minutes of killing, but it also tells a story – I was captivated, as the assassin… hmmm, nope. You’ll have to watch to find out. I’m not going to be that guy and ruin it for you.(more…)

Not since the great battle of Skyrim have we seen such a an impressive example of machinima in Tamriel. Unsurprisingly, this video is by the same folks who brought us that previous epic battle.

Okay, that’s a little bit dramatic, but “making cities a bit more accessible to thieves” is missing the flair that the Dovakhiin deserves, and while I won’t be moving mountains in this second Skyrim mod round-up, I will be shifting cities about a bit. This second shout of mods isn’t really about fixing things or adding to the world: it’s about building on what’s there, making the world nicer. I wouldn’t suggest you use all the mods listed here at the same time, as there’s bound to be come major incompatibilities when you start shifting major urban areas around, but it’s a useful, catch-all guide to bettering the existing game. If the grass isn’t greener on the other side, it soon will be.(more…)

Brave beta-neers of Skyrim, wanderers on the frontier of electronic code, a reward awaits those Dovahkiin’s willing to take a journey to the newly laid lands that the god Bethesda has minted in the dark, hidden lands of “Steam > Settings > Beta Participation > Skyrim Beta”. There awaits violence of a most brutal sort, and leering eyes on the Grim Reaper’s work. Dare ye stare into the Youtube oracle to glimpse the horror? (more…)

Vanity is the subject of the next major update coming to Skyrim, which introduces new kill move animations for melee combat and some snazzy kill cams for ranged weapons and magic spells. If they look familiar in the video above, it's because you already saw them during Todd Howard's DICE 2012 keynote.

Of course, that's not the entirety of the update. Smithing skill boosts now factor into forged item value, there's a "better transition" when going underwater, and a variety of bugs and glitches are addressed. The full patch notes are over on the Bethesda Blog.

If you're a PC player, you can play a beta version of the 1.5 update on Steam right now. All you have to do is go into your settings tab and opt in through the client. The update will be available for Xbox 360 and PS3 players "soon."

Skyrim might not be broken, but it is a bit cracked. There’s never been an open-world that didn’t crumble at the edges of a simulation, and Bethesda’s Nord land is detailed with a fine filigree through its stony butt. Patches will help, and Bethesda have done a lot of good work to keep the game ticking along, but with all those dragons stomping around, sometimes backwards, the mud has been loosened. Thanks to Steam Workshop, the act of modding Skyrim is phenomenally easy: all you need to do is select a mod in the system’s list and it’ll be integrated into the game. There’s also a few from the venerable Skyrim Nexus as well. While we wait for both Bethesda or these guys to pack the mud back in place, there are a few tweaks you can make to the base game, gleaned from the Workshop’s finest fiddlers. They won’t be as fancy as adding monocles and top hats to mudcrabs – I’ll be getting to those in a later article – but they will strengthen Skyrim’s core and fix a few glaring errors and inconsistencies.(more…)

Bethesda's Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for PlayStation 3 launched with notorious lag issues that affected large game files. Bethesda has struggled with the issue, both from a technical perspective and from a PR viewpoint. Now, more than three months after launch, a patch (1.04) has been released to fix ...

With over 4,000 mods on the Skyrim Workshop there's no shortage of ways to modify Skyrim. You can summon spectral horses, add throwing knives, a mass lightning spell, vampire spell tomes, and give merchants a whole bunch of gold so you can more conveniently offload your gear. While these are certainly convenient, they also break the original design of the game. Merchants aren't supposed to have more gold unless you choose to increase your Speech skill and unlock its perk tree...

Bethesda's approach to avoiding "latest patch does horrible thing," which is to publicly beta test its updates, is paying off. Skyrim version 1.4.26 is now downloadable from Steam, and the general working theory is: if it breaks the game, it's almost your fault for downloading it in the first place. (We jest!)

Bethesda warns that only players affected by the issues found after the break should download the update. Remember to back up any save files if you plan to go down the beta route.

Still wandering aimlessly around Tamriel, trying to remember where you left your giant pile of buckets? Get out your phone and get some help. Publisher Prima Games just released an official Skyrim map app, beating the fanmade Dragon Shout to the punch.

The app comes with a world map and 9 capital city maps for free, with other detailed locations available through in-app purchases. You can drop pins on points of interest (say, Bucket Stack Alpha) and zoom in 3200%.

While we're a bit shocked that portions of the Skyrim map are behind a paywall in an app that is nothing but maps of that one game, we must concede the point that Skyrim is irresponsibly huge.

When Skyrim and Steam teamed up, we had a feeling whatever they created would be an instant, smash hit, and it looks like we were right. More than 2 million mods have been downloaded from Steam's Skyrim Workshop, and players have published more than 2,500 mods since its launch on February 2, Bethesda says. Mods range from Valve's own Fall of the Space Core, to graphics updates, varied weapons options, mechanics changes and posh mudcrabs, as seen in the "best of" video above.

Skyrim outsold all Steam games three-to-one in its first month, and it outsold all exclusive titles for both PS3 and Xbox 360, Bethesda claims. The average Steam user has played Skyrim for more than 75 hours, which is a ridiculously high average. Modern Warfare 3 outsold Skyrim for the year, but Skyrim was the second-most-successful title of 2011, beating other blockbusters such as EA's Battlefiled 3. And it doesn't even have multiplayer!
