#theelderscrolls All games are difficult. (Well, almost all games.) One of the most important aspects of difficulty is punishment—if a player fails in a game, the game must let them know it somehow. Bad player! No bonus XP for you! Do it five more times! More »

#skyrim Review copies of Madden NFL 13 arrived today. EA Sports usually sends out funny premiums with its review guides, like it did with a yardage book for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13. This year, they included a quarterback wristband—the kind you see Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers flipping up and staring at during a two-minute drill—to highlight the new audible commands for the Kinect-enabled version of the game. #glitches We lacked a campfire, but that didn't stop us from telling tall tales about the incredible—but completely true, I swear!—things that happened to us while we played our favorite games. Forget about title recommendations, or stories of overcoming difficult challenges. That impressed nobody at recess. The gold was in glitches, and we panned endlessly for it. More »

After a couple of months spent kneeling at the altar of Microsoft exclusivity, Skyrim’s first expansion Dawnguard has made its expensive way to the admirably-supported PC version. It brings vampires and it brings vampire hunters – but will it bring the game-changing of Bloodmoon or the deflation of Shivering Isles? Gaze into my proud undead eyes, human cattle, and allow me to seduce you into reading on.(more…)

The latest title update for Skyrim, version 1.7, will be released tomorrow on Xbox 360 worldwide and on PS3 in America. At least, that's what Bethesda "expects." A European PS3 release will follow next week. The 1.7 patch implements a number of bug fixes, including "general memory and stability optimizations," and, for Xbox, fixes French, German, Italian, and Spanish dragon shouts.

There's no news yet on the PS3's Dawnguard DLC, which has been delayed until Bethesda can get it running at a satisfactory level.

#makeup I don't ordinarily think of "makeup artist" and "gaming" as going together. After all: the characters whose stories we so ardently follow are virtual people, and they are as fantastic or as plain as any other set of pixels can be. More »

#theelderscrolls Like many PC-owning Skyrim players, I spent the last month silently berating Xbox owners who got to play the game's first add-on, the Vampire-laden Dawnguard, before I did. And now that it's been released on Steam, I spent a good chunk of the last weekend finally playing it. More »

The amount of content in Dawnguard means PS3 players really are missing out right now.

Dawnguard, the first expansion for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, is now available on PC for $19.99. It is not, however, available on PlayStation 3, and it’s unclear when that will change.

The reason: it's not ready.

“We are not satisfied yet with Dawnguard’s performance on the PS3,” said the company in a statement on its blog. “We would like for everyone to have a chance to play Dawnguard, but we aren’t going to release it for PS3 knowing that some people’s experience in Skyrim will be worse. “

We have come to expect, and to some extent forgive, some of the issues that plague the traditionally ambitious Bethesda Game Software releases. Skyrim had serious problems on PlayStation 3, however, which is why it technically wasn’t part of our Game of the Year award for Skyrim last year.

“We do everything we can to have our content available to all; from our free updates, to user mods, to paid DLC,” continued the statement. “We’re as disappointed as our fans when that isn’t the case, but we’ll continue to push for that reality.”

Conan O'Brien's no stranger to Skyrim, and in the 11 months since the game came out, he's been exhaustively playing the game in hopes of crafting its most definitive review. The video above is the fruition of those efforts. Or something like that, at least.

#theelderscrolls The themes to Skyrim and Game of Thrones have a lot in common—they're both driving, building melodies with a kind of "Nordic Triplet" groove going on. Sure, they're in different keys, but that's never stopped enthusiastic mashup artists in the past, so why should it now? More »

Bethesda are saying (at QuakeCon) that Dawnguard PC is out at last right now, but I can’t get it come up on Steam just yet. But oh well, I’m sure it’s either a caching thing or it’ll be there any moment – me, I’ve just got to postpostpost and then sleepsleepsleep. Here’s the official word though. I’m hearing it’s $20 for the long-awaited, Vampire-centric Skyrim add-on. Now I’m off to clean my teeth. Good luck, enjoy, and see you tomorrow.

Update: and here it is on Steam to buy now. $20/£14 to you, sir or madam.

Skyrim's update 1.7 is out now on Steam in its full form, rather than the baby beta business that went live last week. Steam will automatically apply the update as Skyrim starts up.

The console version of update 1.7 will be submitted to manufacturers this week, Bethesda says.

Dawnguard, Skyrim's blood-thirsty, hair-raising DLC, has yet to be announced for other platforms now that its 30-day exclusivity deal with Microsoft is over. Bethesda's Pete Hines tweets that there should be Dawnguard information later this week, so keep those fangs sharp.

There should be news on the PlayStation 3 and PC release of Dawnguard, the first downloadable expansion to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, “later this week,” according to a company representative.

Players have become antsy since realizing the 30-day exclusivity window on Xbox 360 had come and gone without any news on Dawnguard’s availability on other platforms. It didn’t help that Bethesda Game Studios was unable to produce a response to quell people’s fears other than “wait.”

Bethesda VP of PR and marketing Pete Hines has taken the most heat on Twitter, but has continued to allude to impending news, with the most telling tease coming earlier this morning.

“Nothing has been said/announced about it,” said Hines today. “We should have info later this week.”

It’s probably not a coincidence QuakeCon is later this week, an event Bethesda is now heavily involved in.

Don't fret, PlayStation 3 Skyrimmers, Bethesda says the game's 1.7 patch is heading to Sony's console "in the coming weeks." Bethesda acknowledged as much in a tweet yesterday afternoon. The game's 1.7 patch on PS3 includes the various updates from 1.6 (mounted combat, new kill cams, etc.), but it falls short of adding the Dawnguard DLC, which is still exclusive to Xbox 360.

That DLC was issued a 30-day exclusivity period earlier this year - a period which expires today, reports Kotaku - but Bethesda's VP of marketing Pete Hines stated on Twitter, "We have not announced Dawnguard for any other platform, nor given a timeline for any such news. If we have news, I promise I'd tell you." He followed that up by saying, "I was simply stating that expecting/demanding something today is unfounded. Not that news is never coming." It sounds like Dawnguard may yet head to other platforms (eventually).

We've reached out to Bethesda for further comment and will let you know if we hear back.

That’s not to say that it’s not coming out, just that there’s no announcement, and that we should therefore not expect its imminent release – which was something we wondered about with the advent of the recent patch. Pete Hines, who tweeted the news of the non-announcement, followed up by saying “I was simply stating that expecting/demanding something today is unfounded. Not that news is never coming.”

Oh well, that’s a shame. I’m going to pass the time by installing one bajillion mods from Skyrim’s Steam Workshop and seeing what happens. Crabs wearing monocles, probably.

It’s odd to look back to the many frustrations of Skyrim’s launch, all those PC-specific oversights and technical flaws that drove us spare, and how so many (but not all, I know – modding the UI is still all but vital) of them have since been addressed. New textures, 2GB RAM cap lifted, sound quality bug sorted, mounted combat added… What seemed to be a fairly perfunctory PC version has been nurtured to fuller health in the days since launch, and that continues with patch 1.7, now in beta on Steam. There isn’t much in the way of big revelations, but “General memory and stability optimizations” is the kind of thing that’s always good to hear. I wish someone would optimise my stability.(more…)

Bethesda has rolled out the beta version of its Skyrim 1.7 patch on Steam for PC wizards looking to test the dark magics. An announcement on the arrival of the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will arrive "as soon as possible." Details on the patch can be found on the BethBlog.

For Xbox 360 users, Update 1.7 will also feature Kinect-specific fixes. Beyond improved recognition of Kinect voice commands, there are also now Kinect-enabled dragon language shouts in Skyrim and the Dawnguard expansion for "French, German, Italian and Spanish" should work properly now. #theelderscrolls Many Skyrim mods are there to enhance the game in a realistic manner. Better maps, easier menus, improved visuals, etc. This one doesn't do any of those things. It just turns the game into the most Nordic game of Minecraft you've ever seen. More »
