There's a glimmer of a great game in here, buried under a lifeless surface and some terrible game pacing. One for the game-starved only.

Making a strong case for minimalism providing truly awe-inspiring results, NightSky takes a key concept to levels that even fully-fledged retail games have trouble reaching. No guns, no damsel in distress, no witty vocal main character, but easily one of the most memorable experiences anyone will ever have on a Nintendo 3DS.

It’s accomplished and inventive, but there’s not enough to quicken the pulse, and you feel relief, rather than satisfaction, when the trickier challenges are conquered. The constant metallic clanks are the sound of a game whose nuts and bolts are fully functional, but this tin man of a game is missing its heart.

Though the price may seem a little steep for a game of this complexity and length, there is no denying that NightSky accomplishes just about everything it sets out to do.

The level elements – platforms, your character, etc. – are shown entirely in silhouette against beautiful, colorful skies, accompanied by an atmospheric, slow-paced soundtrack by Chris Schlarb. It all speaks to a sense of restraint. Restraint is a tool rarely employed in games, and it makes all the difference in this one.

Nintendo fans have been waiting a long time for NightSky, and they won't be disappointed. The finished product is gorgeous, flawlessly designed and bracingly atmospheric, with perfect controls, clever puzzles, and an endlessly evolving play style that will never see you solving the same puzzle the same way twice

Finally...I finally got to check out NightSky on 3DS. I am such a HUGE fan of Nifflas' games, as I feel no one else makes titles like him. The artwork is simple but gorgeous, the gameplay mechanics are easy to pick up but ever so engaging and the atmosphere always ties the entire game universe together. After finally going hands-on with Nifflas' NightSky on 3DS, I can't wait to download it on my own.

What's NighySky all about? You play as a silhouetted ball rolling through a puzzling landscape. It's your job to use the ball's speed, sticky and heavy powers to get from point A to point B. The thing is, NightSky is all about taking in the journey rather than racing from the finish.

As I said above the atmosphere in Nifflas' games is amazing. These titles begged to be played while you're own your own. You need a clear head and a relaxed mood to really take it all in. NightSky is really do different. While the gameplay might involve traditional platforming elements, it's the way that everything comes together that really makes it so special.

I can't even pinpoint what makes NightSky such a goosebump-worthy experience. Is the atmosphere achieved by the barely-there yet gorgeous music? Is it the subtle use of colors? How about the idea of traveling across the landscape without any idea of your destination or how you got where you are? I don't know what it is, but NightSky truly works its magic on me.

I'm telling you, keep your eye on this one. If you're a fan of platforming puzzlers, that's reason enough to look more into NightSky. If you want a game that's going to be a cut above the rest when it comes to atmosphere, I can't recommend a developer any better than Nifflas. Much like Nintendo Land, NightSky is a game that needs to be played to truly be appreciated for all it offers.
