On behalf of the entire team at DICE, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who played and participated in our Battlefield 3 Open Beta. The information that we’ve gathered from your play time is invaluable. It will help to make Battlefield 3 even better!

But it’s not all network load balancing and matchmaking algorithms; When it comes to data, the real star is you! Just look at these killer numbers we pulled down from all of you PS3 players:

6264239098_6580bbdcaa_z.jpg

Crazy numbers and we couldn’t have done it without you! Just a few more days now before the game launches on the 25th, and as you may know already, PS3 players will get access to the expansion pack Back to Karkand one week early.

But before I leave you, here is a short selection of just some of the hundreds of changes and additions we are making to the game before launch, as a direct result of your feedback in the Open Beta:

Improved Squad Functionality

There will be improved squad functionality in the retail game (including but not limited to): the ability to create squads prior to launching into a game, sticking with your squad when joining a game and continuing together through future games (if team balance on the server allows it), inviting friends to a squad, and changing squads once in game.

More Accessible Settings Menu

The ability to modify your settings via the deploy screen has been added into the retail game.

Improved Kill Cam

In the Open Beta, the Kill Cam would sometimes behave erratically. This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.

Netcode Optimization

The netcode is one of the many things that we tested as part of the Open Beta and it was not necessarily reflective of the final retail game. The DICE team appreciates, and has heard, the feedback you’ve provided and is further optimizing online play.

A few weeks ago, a report began circulating that the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 3 would ship with a high resolution texture pack to increase its graphical fidelity. Now GamerZines has uncovered additional info on the feature, which turns out not to be as intriguing as it sounds. According to executive producer Patrick Bach, the texture pack isn't "magic" and is "the same thing we do for PC and PS3, so there's nothing extra."

Specifically, the pack installs to the Xbox 360, allowing Battlefield 3 to stream higher resolution textures from the hard drive. The practice is common on PC and PS3, which come standard with hard drives. On the Xbox version, however, DICE had to make the texture streaming optional, as not all Xbox consoles are guaranteed to have a hard drive. "No one has really tried to do it properly," said Bachman, "so us doing it will create question marks."

Without the texture-pack installed, noted Bachman, users are basically getting the "standard-def" version of the game, whereas the texture pack will enable "a more detailed, varied and vivid experience."

360 owners are going to want to clear some space on their hard-drive ahead of next week's Battlefield 3 launch. As previously reported, the 360 version of Battlefield 3 will ship with an additional DVD containing a texture pack for optional installation to the 360's hard-drive. These high-defini...

I’ve noticed a mistake that’s being made by a couple of publishers. EA and Activision both plan to release shooty-man games before Christmas, about some soldiers with some modern weapons having a big fight. One is called Battlefield 3 and the other Modern Warfare 3. But the weird thing is, the two companies keep taking potshots, saying their games aren’t like the other. But the thing is, they really do look like each other. I wonder if they’ve just not looked at the screenshots of their rivals’ game, or something. In fact, I’ve prepared you a quiz!

If you're looking for the perfect gift for your favorite gaming website this holiday season, why not consider this Battlefield 3 simulator constructed by Channel 5's The Gadget Show? With an omni-directional treadmill, a wireless gun system, five HD projectors and a massive dome, it would strike just the right balance between you looking chintzy and us being embarrassed by your generosity.

Our friends in the UK can find out just how much they'll be spending on this touching, affordable gift when the episode premieres there on October 24 at 8 p.m. on Channel 5.

After insisting there’s room for more than one military shooter in the market, DICE’s Patrick Bach told IndustryGamers than be believes shooters are becoming a “service”: “I also believe that our free social platform Battlelog will make a huge difference in how people perceive where the game starts and ends. Games, especially FPS titles with their deep persistence and team play are no longer just hard-coded discs. They are transforming into a service.” People sure do love statistics and stuff, it’s true. But does that really make it a service?

He also argued that “authenticity” was more important than realism (contrasting the game with the Armas, I suppose): “We are not trying to create a simulator. But the feeling that what happens in the game is plausible and looks real and authentic is important to us.”

#battlefield Well this certainly sounds fun-slash-frustrating. On CBS Interactive's upcoming show The Controller, six pro gamers will be competing against one another in Battlefield 3, but not in the way that you'd think. Rather than sitting down and demonstrating their skills in the game itself, the pros will be competing in real-world physical challenges, then training amateurs to compete against one another in the video game. The Battlefield blog has posted images, names and brief designer commentaries on five more Battlefield 3 maps, bringing the shipping total to nine. According to DICE Junior Product Manager Tommy Rydling, the final selection represents "the best of the best, the maps that shone the brightest in our playtests, and the ones that combined bring out everything we want both veteran and new Battlefield players to experience in Battlefield 3 multiplayer."

Among the listed maps are Grand Bazaar, a tight urban playground; Seine Crossing in downtown Paris; Kharg Island; Caspian Border, which players briefly experienced at the conclusion of beta testing; and Noshahr Canals, a showdown in an Iranian port.

Pronouncing that last one as "Nosehair Canals" and envisioning it as a sickening, snotty Rush map with an inexplicable connection to "Inner Space" is quite alright.

In an offhanded way, Electronic Arts has confirmed that Battlefield 3 will indeed use Online Pass. Responding on Twitter to a fan asking if a new copy was required to play multiplayer, DICE core gameplay designer Alan Kertz responded, "You can also purchase an online pass for a used copy." Kertz explained the reasoning behind Online Pass to another fan, writing, "Because servers cost money, and used games don't make developers any money."

Of course, the fact that an EA-published title will include Online Pass isn't exactly surprising, and we've suspected as much for Battlefield 3 for months now. What is somewhat surprising is that Battlefield 3's Online Pass is required for all multiplayer access. In the game's predecessor, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Online Pass granted players extra multiplayer content, but was not required for multiplayer access. Then again, that was before Online Pass started earning millions of dollars.

While we're still not convinced it's a great idea to lock your hot, hot console inside a plastic box, Calibur11 has announced the latest in its line of "Vaults." Available for Xbox 360 or PS3, the new model carries a Battlefield 3 theme complete with an LED-lit claymore, decorative(?) smoke grenade and controller cradle.

For what it's worth, Calibur11 also claims that the vault actually improves your console's cooling prowess, thanks to "a performance grid that enhances cooling of your video game system by increasing airflow." The Battlefield 3 vault will go on sale "this fall" for $90. GameStop will also offer a $100 bundle that includes the PS3 vault, a PS3 copy of Battlefield 3 and a download code for the Physical Warfare DLC.

Last week, I spent some six hours with a not-quite-final-but-close version of Battlefield 3. I think EA and DICE would like for me to talk about the single player but really, I don't have anything more to say about it than I did a few weeks ago. I can't talk about most of the multiplayer maps I played with any specificity, other than the Grand Bazaar level, which, hallelujah, had a tank in it. But at this point, I feel confident in making the following statement:

Releasing a beta for Battlefield 3 might be the biggest mistake EA has made with its biggest game this year.
