While he neglected to sling any specific mud at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, EA executive vice president Patrick Soderlund believes that Battlefield 3 multiplayer will make players "feel loyal" to the game, even in the face of Activision's annual juggernaut. "We all respect what Call of Duty brings and what they're going to come with," Soderlund recently told IGN, though he believes EA has "an industry-leading multiplayer game that will make people want to stay with us, frankly."

Soderlund sees Battlefield 3's multiplayer as a service that allows players to "continually get updates and new content and hopefully improvements to the product as we go." One such piece of content will be this December's "Back to Karkand" DLC, which Soderlund promises will contain more destruction than the current multiplayer maps. "It's a different level, even more so than in BF3," he said, adding that the DLC team made a "deliberate decision" to ratchet up the destruction for the upcoming content. Sounds like fun, so long as it doesn't destroy the servers too.

Over the past few days I have, along with tens (perhaps hundreds) of thousands of other people, been blasting my way through the initial hours of Battlefield 3‘s post-launch multiplayer. The game has certainly benefited from the time spent in beta, but it still has some way to go before it reaches the kind of polish and balance we’re going to enjoy in the coming years. Nevertheless it’s been predictably thrilling, and getting to grips with this new Battlefield has been one of the highlights of my year so far. EA has signed on with Dr. Pepper to release some exclusive DLC for Battlefield 3 this week. Every specially marked bottle of Dr. Pepper has a code in it that you can redeem on the official Dr. Pepper site, and that code will earn you special DLC for the game. This includes mulitplayer skins and a PlayStation Home avatar, to various special edition dog tags to display. You can see the dog tag choices above; they're especially meme-y for some reason, like a whole six wolf moon to Hello Kitty, and a Rebecca Black-inspired beer bottle opener.

If you don't want to shell out for the soda itself, you can get a free code through Dr. Pepper's website (though you can only select the content for one platform, so choose wisely). The promotion ends on December 31, so make sure you put them in by the end of 2011. And give thanks to the ever-lovin' gods of sugar water for the free BF3 DLC.

I know numbers are usually boring, but given how much has been made about the competition between Battlefield 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (mostly because of one company's chest pounding), there’s good reason to be paying attention.

Putting aside what anyone actually thought of Battlefield 3, Electronic Arts had ensured its latest shooter would do reasonably well, thanks to the game’s expansive, expensive and very loud marketing campaign. People also seem to really dig the game (at least the multiplayer), prompting about five million of them to pay for a copy, the publisher announced this afternoon.

These numbers are based on EA’s own “internal estimates,” and come not long after the company announced it had shipped 10 million copies of the game worldwide. Shipped and sold are crucially different, though that's not to say five million is anything to sneeze at.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 shipped on March 2010 and sold 2.3 million units right out of the gate. Based on numbers released a few months later, the game went on to sell more than five million units.

In today’s press release, EA said the Battlefield series has sold, in total, 50 million units.

The first expansion pack for Battlefield 3, Back to Karkand, will launch in December and include four classic Battlefield maps -- Wake Island, Strike at Karkand, Gulf of Oman and Sharqi Penninsula -- and we can now see the remastery in some screens. Back to Karkand will feature 10 iconic Battlefield weapons, five new dog tags, five new achievements, three new vehicles and as much bloodshed as EA's servers can handle -- which may only be a few pints, depending on the position of your ports.

Are you getting into games of Battlefield 3, but still having issues? Are you finding yourself dying before you think you should possibly be dead, or seeing an absurd delay between when you pull the trigger and when bullets come out of the end of your gun? Are you screaming at your television about how fast your network connection is and how bad your lag in Battlefield 3 should not be?

We might be able to help. You got to open your ports, dawg.

Let's sit down for a few minutes and talk about Battlefield 3.

Let's step outside of the hype, the constant back and forth between fans of the series and fans of, you know, that series. Let's leave the baggage attached by EA's masochistic desire to sidle right up against that game, and we can ignore that beta too. I know it's hard. But let's do it anyway.

Instead, let's talk about what we've been told is DICE's most ambitious, biggest game ever. And let's talk about how Battlefield 3 is simultaneously disappointing in that respect, and brilliant in others, and why that might be OK anyway -- maybe even great.

#battlefield The launch trailer offered teasers of how the up-rezzed environments from previous Battlefield games would look in the upcoming Back to Karkand expansion pack, but these screens show them in all their Frostbite 2 glory. Back to Karkand will also include new dog tags, new Xbox Live achievements/PSN trophies, three new vehicles and 10 iconic Battlefield weapons. EA's financial results for Q2 of the current financial year show titles in its key franchises have performed strongly. Pre-orders for Battlefield 3 sat at almost 3 million units, with the total number shipped to retailers standing at over 10 million and retailers requesting further shipments as they become available...
