#saintsrowthethird Volition's sometimes beautiful, but thoroughly twisted purple fantasy Saints Row: The Third is coming to the PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 later this year. We'll have gameplay impressions soon. But for now, all we have is a trailer. More »

More stylish than ridiculous, the CG trailer for Saints Row: The Third has plenty of gunfire, but not enough beatings with giant, purple adult toys.

This game is gonna be great.

Developer Volition says its goal "is to make [Saints Row the Third] the most ridiculous, over-the-top guilty pleasure in video games." After seeing how you can beat people up with a giant purple dildo while wearing a furry outfit, and then make your getaway in a hover jet with laser missiles, I'm inclined to think Volition is on the right track...

Along with news of a release date on 15th November, Volition have produced a CG trailer for Saints Row: The Third. Straight facts, no jokes. Except for this one: What’s red and invisible? No tomatoes.

Spore's "Creature Creator" let you build your own freak in advance of the release of the actual game. THQ is taking a page from Maxis' book, allowing you to design your own, well, freak for Saints Row: The Third. The "Initiation Station" app for PS3, PC and Xbox 360 will allow you to design a character, share it via the official community site, and even download other users' characters to import into the game.

There's a catch. Early access to the build-a-scumbag app is tied to pre-orders of Red Faction: Armageddon. "Early purchasers" of Volition and THQ's other upcoming game get a one-week head start in the Initiation Station. The app will be available for all some time before the "holiday" release of Saints Row: The Third.

Mike Kulas, the founder and president of Red Faction developer Volition, is leaving the company. His last day will be next Monday, reports The News-Gazette.

Kulas, 49, said his departure, which he had been considering since last year, wasn't triggered by any particular event. With Red Faction: Armageddon apparently complete (and all set for June 7), and Saints Row: The Third in "the home stretch," now is just a good time to make his move. Kulas will be succeeded by Volition's long-time vice president of product development, Dan Cermak.

Kulas founded Volition in 1996, when he and then partner Matt Toschlog split their Parallax Software outfit in two. The pair had formed Parallax several years earlier, producing the successful Descent series.

Volition was acquired by THQ in 2000 and has grown from some 30 employees in the late 90s to over 200 today, while continuing to maintain operations in Champaign, Ill. Kulas said he plans to remain in Champaign and will take some time this summer before deciding on his next professional endeavor.

Previously, we used an image of a "sex toy bat" to highlight the weirdness of Saint's Row: The Third. This time it's a woman in a bikini running away from an explosion. Love it or leave it, that's the game.

The first screenshots of Saints Row: The Third have appeared. Hip hip, poo-splatter. As the old saying goes. There’s a LOT of them. Which is what we like to see. We also like to see tanks crushing police cars, insane parachute shoot-outs, and crazy neon fights in which a girl is hatting a masked wrestler type with a four foot purple dildo. Wait, no – we don’t like to see that at all. Good heavens. But still. We have. You should too.

While April 1st saw everyone oh-so hilariously lying about their products to create pointless confusion for gamers, it did also see a rather good sort-of-prank-but-actually-just-a-good-joke-even-if-it-weren’t-International-Lying-Day-and-isn’t-a-lie-either from Volition for Saints Row: The Third. Advertised as the first in-game footage, it’s – well, it’s exactly that. It’s below. There’s also some sadder news.

Game Informer's story on Saints Row: The Third started with just a few screenshots, but apparently the magazine had some extra video footage around, so it decided to turn it into a nearly one hour long documentary on the entire Volition studio, from its PC beginnings with Descent: Freespace, up into the big console series Red Faction and Saints Row.

There's a lot of fascinating behind-the-scenes stuff here for old-school Volition fans, including a lot of thinking on why Volition has made the games it has, how the company has built up its growing legacy piece by piece, and even why some developers on the staff didn't want anything to do with Saints Row in the first place. The last 18 years of Volition's work makes for some excellent weekend watching.

Saint's Row: The Third isn't going to tone down the series' trademark lunacy if Game Informer's screenshot gallery is any indication. Guns and explosions are present, but so is a "sex toy bat" (no word yet on the presence of a vibration setting).

The screens also reveal SRTT's costume and character customization screens, locales, vehicles and characters. Check 'em out over at GameInformer.com.

#quotable Volition, the team behind upcoming THQ games Saints Row: The Third and Red Faction: Armageddon, is still in the business of making their games for the PC, without worrying about the platform's rampant piracy problems. "I don't think [piracy] is something at the forefront for us," Volition studio manager Eric Barker tells Eurogamer. "First and foremost, we want to make sure we're making a game people would want to pirate." More »

The PC ports of Volition's Saints Row 2 and Red: Faction: Guerrilla were handled by outside studios, and both suffered quality issues because of it. For the series' next iterations -- Red Faction: Armageddon (May) and Saints Row: The Third (Holiday 2011) -- Volition is reclaiming development duties, handling the PC versions in-house alongside the console editions.

"For us, the key thing was making sure the PC version [of Armageddon] was done in-house," Volition studio manager Eric Barker told Eurogamer, brushing aside the debate over the fate of PC gaming. "I can't predict the future, but I'm really happy with how Red Faction: Armageddon looks on PC. It's beautiful."

"We definitely believe PC games are great, and if they're done right, and done well by a studio, they're phenomenal," he added, before offering his cheeky response to concerns about the prevalence of piracy on the platform. "Let's make a game that's worth stealing, and then we'll worry about making sure they don't."

Subtlety has never been a strong point of Saints Row. For its third outing, THQ's sandbox action series is escalating the "our game is more ridiculous than yours" factor by introducing new weapons like air strikes, Predator drones and ... a "sex toy bat."

In its latest look at Saints Row: The Third, Game Informer reveals that in addition to the ability to tag any car in the game and drive it remotely -- perfect for getting rival gangs in hot water, apparently -- players will get to wield a huge, wiggly faux willy capable of reducing enemies (and bystanders) to a bloody pulp with a single hit.

There's also a much deeper weapon upgrade system in the works, not that you're even still reading this.
