While I can understand the appeal of Jetpack Joyride, one of the best mobile games ever made, I could never figure out why Halfbrick Studio's other huge seller, Fruit Ninja, drove so many gamers crazy. Now, days after the release of the developer's latest game, I've finally figured out the secret: Halfbrick Studios is staffed by sorcerers. That's the only way I can explain why I've spent the entire weekend flinging fish across my screen and screaming at my iPad. That's what Fish Out of Water! is all about — swiping and shouting. Players have a school of six fish, each with different characteristics (weight, buoyancy, aerodymanics). They choose three to send skipping across the water, aiming for distance and a fair number of skips. After the last of the three are flung, a gang of crabs gives you an Olympic-style score. There's a leveling system that rewards players for completing goals, a little light crafting for power-ups, and the weather conditions change every hour — I've been checking back in regularly — but the most compelling aspect of the game is in the top left hand of the screen here. As you play, other players' scores flash atop the screen. See? Jake scored an 8.4. I scored an 8. Obviously I need to kick Jake's ass. I swipe. I swipe more. I check back later to see if the weather has changed — maybe I can improve my score. I join a league, representing random people in daily competitions. THIS IS A FISH-SKIPPING GAME. *breathes* Okay, maybe it's not just a fish-skipping game. Maybe Fish Out of Water! is the best fish-skipping game ever. It d0esn't matter. What matters is Jake is an asshole, and the red crab keeps giving me low scores. He's probably in cahoots with Jake. Maybe they are lovers. Why can't I break 8.0?! Fish Out of Water! Genre: Sports? Hi there! Alexey Menshikov of Beatshapers and I are happy that one of the biggest names in mobile gaming – Jetpack Joyride — is coming to PSN in North America this week for $3.99. With over 35 million downloads around the world so far, millions more can now suit up as Barry Steakfries and join in the high-flying phenomenon.

Down on his luck as a struggling gramophone salesman, Barry comes across the “secret” laboratory of Legitimate Research, a corporation dedicated to developing crazy new technologies. Seizing the chance to become a hero, Barry begins his ride after commandeering a jetpack and making good his escape. That’s where you’ll jump in and guide his adventure with accessible one-button gameplay.

Along the way, you must avoid lasers, missiles and electro zappers, all the while grabbing coins and trying out even more ridiculous vehicles – Lil’ Stomper, Profit Bird and the robot dragon himself, Mr. Cuddles!

The game features a robust Stash system, where everyone can upgrade their gear, change the suite, buy some gadgets and utilities or track their progress of unlocking 34 in-game achievements. You’ll grab one of 12 jetpacks, including the classic Machine Gun Jetpack or the colorful Rainbow, suit up in a vast wardrobe of 12+ unique costumes and make sure Barry’s best friend Flash comes along for the ride!

You can purchase Gadgets from Stash with coins you’ll collect as you play, and this Minis version features 16 various Gadgets organized into a tier system, with a particular number of purchases required to unlock the next level. You able equip only two of them for any run but proper gadgets pairing gives an extra reward, depends on its functional: from precious extra meters to slide (Freeze-o-matic), bounce (Insta-Ball) to super maneuverability (Gravity Belt and Air Barry), from Coin Magnet which attracts coins to Free Ride, a free Vehicle ride at the next your escape.

This new Minis version comes with a free unlocked Sansei look and Traditional Jetpack, with free activated Head Start and Quick Revive and Final Blast utilities available for single use with every new save data created.

The teams at Halfbrick and Beatshapers hope you enjoy it!

Jetpack Joyride is finally making the rocket-assisted jump to Android. In fact, the game is available for Android devices right now on both Google Play and the Amazon App Store. Even better, the scientist-crushing, coin-grabbing action game is free on either service.

You can watch the Android launch trailer above. You might think that it's exactly the same as the launch trailer that was released last year, and you'd be right, except now there are some extra logos at the end.

It's worth noting that the game is currently in beta, and some of the seams are definitely showing. The visuals aren't terribly sharp and we even ran into some display issues, specifically if your browser view settings are zoomed in.

Again though, it's Jetpack Joyride, excitingly and horrifyingly more available than ever.

Halfbrick's chief creative officer Luke Muscat took panel attendees on a whirlwind tour of the development process for Jetpack Joyride during his Depth in Simplicity: The Making of Jetpack Joyride panel. Aside from sharing what the final name of the game could've been, Muscat also showed us the progression of the store. You may not know this, but the Jetpack Joyride storefront wasn't always so slick.

In fact, early on it was downright ugly, but Muscat and his team iterated and looked to competitors on the App Store for inspiration. We snapped some shots of the earliest versions of the store on through what Halfbrick came up with later on -- screens we've conveniently embedded in the gallery below.

During his GDC talk Depth in Simplicity: The Making of Jetpack Joyride, Halfbrick Studios' chief creative officer Luke Muscat shared the story of the 11th hour name change for Jetpack Joyride, which was originally supposed to be called Machine Gun Jetpack.

"I'll tell you, we almost changed the app to this name because we thought by making it too drastically different we were going to undermine all of our marketing effort, but we actually had this name for a while: Machine Fun Jetpack," Muscat said. "At the time, we were like 'that sounds alright, maybe I could live with that.' Then I got in the next morning, and I walked up to Phil's desk, and we both said the same thing at the same time: 'What the *crag* were we thinking?' I'm so glad we didn't go out with that name."

Jetpack Joyride is one of the more delightful jetpack-based games to come out this year -- and for a "limited time," you can grab it for free. The official Facebook page for the iOS App Store is offering the game at no cost for reasons unknown; probably as an altruistic gesture, since human lives are inherently enriched by the presence of propulsion-based backpacks.

There's no telling when the deal expires, so we'd suggest getting it ... like, right this instant. Seriously. Go.

Our love for Jetpack Joyride is well documented, but we're not above admitting that accessing the game's leaderboard system is a bit on the cumbersome side. That's why today's surprise update with in-level leaderboard implementation is so, so exciting. Now, while flying along in your jetpack of choice, sign posts will point out friends' scores as you soar past them, maniacally laughing in the bathroom, all alone.

The update also adds a pair of new jetpacks and a trio of wearable items for Señor Steakfries, giving players even more to dress up the chronically murdered main character with. Another bonus? The update is totally free, while the full game still costs just $.99. But then, you probably already bought it. Right? Right?!
Jetpack Joyride update adds new jetpacks, one Phil Larsen

The thing about joyriding is that it's a chaotic act, one that has no motivation or plans beyond the need to take a ride in the name of joy. Halfbrick's latest, Jetpack Joyride, embodies that spirit -- only with jetpacks. And today, a new update adds a couple new rides to race around in, MTV Multiplayer reports.

One of them is a new vehicle named Mr. Cuddles, a giant fire-breathing dragon. Also added are a new jetpack which pays homage to the company's original hit, Fruit Ninja, and Halfbrick's head of marketing, Phil Larsen, who makes an appearance as a playable character skin -- perfect for crossing two things off on your bucket list: playing a game as a head of marketing and playing a game as a former Joystiq employee. Congrats, Phil!
Portabliss: Jetpack Joyride (iOS)

Did you know that you can download handheld games now? That's amazingly convenient! The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy -- and that's where we come in, with our Portabliss column. In each installment, we'll tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: Jetpack Joyride. The free NES games in Nintendo's 3DS Ambassador Program arrived at an awkward time, because the standout of that group for me, Balloon Fight, is now getting overshadowed by the many jetpacks of Barry Steakfries. Like Halfbrick's Monster Dash before it (and Balloon Fight's "Balloon Trip" mode long before that), Jetpack Joyride takes the autorunning genre defined on iOS by Canabalt and adds a few kinks.

Unlike Monster Dash, however, Jetpack Joyride is deep, with a mess of power-ups, vehicles, and mechanical and aesthetic additions. I was repeatedly taken aback by how fleshed out Halfbrick has made its latest iOS game, and repeatedly charmed by the studio's presentation. Nods to past Halfbrick titles abound (beyond the main character's return from previous iOS games), and the inclusion of an entire vehicle poking fun at the iPhone's most popular franchise lends an extra layer of levity to the already cheeky proceedings.

We've got good news and some vaguely upsetting news. First, the good news: Machine Gun Jetpack will finally touch down for $0.99 next week, on September 1, as a universal release on iOS (i.e. it works across iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad).

The vaguely upsetting news? Developer Halfbrick has renamed Machine Gun Jetpack, presumably because the title was just too awesome. The game will now officially be known by the much more fanciful title, Jetpack Joyride. Halfbrick released a video explaining that the name was changed to reflect that the game now includes "so much more than just the machine gun jetpack."

Unofficially, of course, it will always be Machine Gun Jetpack in our hearts.
