Well, I wasn’t expecting thing: Adhesive games’ Hawken, the incredible-looking mecha-deathmatch that we’ve spent the past few months pining for, has got a live-action trailer, completed with grizzled-warrior voice over. You can watch it below.

I’m assuming this big-budget manner of trailering is down to Hawken’s big deal, which is to appear first on cloud-gaming service, Gaikai. Hawken will be free-to-play, and its going to be available on Gaikai from December 12th. There’s some kind of sign up for access at that time on the main site.(more…)

#hawken Does upcoming multiplayer shooter Hawken need a story? It's multiplayer-only, so maybe not. I know I liked it better when I could pretend it was just based on some obscure, bleak manga where the only things that mattered were money and staying alive. More »

Hawken keeps surprising us. First, we were surprised that the really great-looking mech shooter is being made by an indie studio, then it surprised us to learn that it would be free-to-play. And here's another surprise: Dave Perry's cloud gaming system Gaikai has signed a deal to let players see Hawken running through the service in advance of the planned December 12 release date.

Gaikai allows nearly any game to be streamed directly from its servers to any browser, which means that the first impression of the graphics-intensive Hawken will be playable anywhere Gaikai will run (including on some tablets, and computers of all shapes and sizes). This deal makes a lot of sense from both sides: Hawken needs a large audience to get its free-to-play engine running, and Gaikai could use a big title to connect users to its servers. The Gaikai demo will be on playhawken.com and a few other sites, so eyes open until then.

OnLive and Gaikai are pretty silly names. I mean, OnLive is a made-up word that rolls off the tongue far better than it does the brain, and Gaikai actually refers to the ocean, which is sort of the opposite of the clouds. So when I saw “Nvidia” and “cloud gaming” in the same sentence, I was thrilled. What would a graphics hardware manufacturer with a history of impressively impenetrable names do when matched against this caliber of peer? “Grid,” as it turns out. Well, er, OK. Man, that’s not ridiculous at all. In consolation, it’s promising latency that’s “comparable, if not better, than gaming on a console at home.” I guess that’s something.

Alternative headline: Hawken Is Going To Be Playable First Over Gaikai.(more…)

#hawken As short as the world is on decent multiplayer mech games, I think the main reason so many people have been so excited for Hawken is the look of the thing. Taking a cue from awesome Japanese model series Maschinen Krieger, its dirty, megacity take on the future would look amazing in a blockbuster, let alone something coming out of a tiny indie studio. After playing Hawken multiplayer at GDC 2012, it's easy to see why investors have already placed a $10 million bet on this free-to-play online mech game. Hawken, the free-to-play, first-person mech shooter from indie studio Adhesive Games, keeps looking better and better, especially now that its videos have lost the "this is a work in progress" warning. We guess raising $10 million will do that to a game. The latest teaser shows off gameplay during an intense battle from the inside of a mech suit that makes two things occupy our thoughts: rails guns and rockets.

Watch the teaser above and enlist in the Hawken beta right here.

Whenever I watch Hawken footage, I need a bit of time alone afterwards to lie down and stop the room from spinning. Everything shakes in Adhesive’s mech-on-mech FPS. Even the crosshairs judder in combat. I wish the bolts were a little bit tighter. While it’s immersive, the localised earthquakes on feet seem to be engineered by evil dentists, intent on cracking the teeth of the drivers. I’ll bet there’s an option to auto-pilot the things right to a dentist’s office for a mid-battle fixer-upper. Its the only explanation I’m considering, so don’t fill the comments with alternatives after watching the video below, as there’s almost no chance of me paying any heed to silly theories not based on the history of evil dentistry.(more…)

Tim Schafer's Double Fine Entertainment has made a lot of noise by getting fans to pay over $2.6 million for them to put together an old school adventure game, but here's a reminder that there are still some reasons to do things the old way. About 7.4 million reasons, in fact: Publisher Meteor Entertainment has reportedly raised over $10 million in funding for its upcoming multiplayer mech game, Hawken.

Meteor raised the money by pitching its idea to venture capital firms Benchmark Capital and FirstMark Capital, the same companies that initially invested in the makers of League of Legends, Riot Games.

Riot Games later sold for a rumored $350 million. Hawken (which is being developed by Adhesive Games) is also enjoying a nice bit of player interest already, with over 200,000 signed up for the closed beta, and lots more looking forward to the free-to-play launch. Schafer and company have done great things with Kickstarter, but there's still a lot of money to be made through more traditional routes as well.

We're sure you watched thousands of YouTube videos last year, but we bet only a handful featured flying robots with guns, and just one of those was an explosive multiplayer mech battle built on Unreal Engine 3 -- yeah, that one, right up there. Hawken, the breakout title from indie studio Adhesive Games, is scheduled to launch on Dec. 12, published by Meteor Entertainment.

Hawken will be web-based, free-to-play and feature fast-paced action in short bursts, styled after Call of Duty multiplayer, Adhesive co-founder Khang Le said. Players in Hawken will battle for survival and resources inside flying, rocket-equipped mechs in various regions of a barren industrial wasteland (or heaven, as we call it). Hawken is multiplayer only and will play in a session-based format similar to League of Legends, Le said.

For a further glimpse at Hawken's universe, hit up the video after the break, which displays desert gameplay. If that intrigues you, sign up for the closed beta right here -- get three friends (enemies, strangers) to enlist and guarantee your spot.

Time to spin the wheel of game payment: the game is Hawken. A beautiful multiplayer, mech basher. What will we do to get it on our PC? Do we pay all-out, or is it going to land on this part of the wheel marked “free-for-all”. Ready? Spin! Tick-a-tick-a-tick-a-tick-tock. Oh my! Put your money away, people. Hide your Dollars, burn your Euros (I know, it’s too easy), laminate your Lira, rip up your Real. Punt the Pound: Hawken is free.(more…)

#hawken Upcoming multiplayer shooter Hawken, which just looks *crag*ing cool, doesn't have a singleplayer campaign. So it doesn't really have much of a story. What it does have, though, is a filthy dirty megalopolis/anime setting, which this moody new trailer shows off. More »

Is there a game in development that looks prettier than mech combat title Hawken? Perhaps not, which is remarkable, seeing as this is an indie game being assembled by no more than ten guys. Go, ten guys! I might not be entirely sold on your game’s combat mechanics, but so long as you keep sticking apartment blocks in the sky I will love you.

After the jump you’ll find a developer diary talking about the team’s “design goals”. which rather plays down the game’s visuals to talk about the game proper. It’s a bit like going to dinner with a supermodel only for her to keep talking about how she doesn’t like regenerative health and so on. Which doesn’t sound so bad, actually. What am I whinging about?(more…)
