Mr Craig Lager of GamingDaily fame takes to the podium to present a two-part guide to getting started in – and ultimately mastering – racing games. You can do it!

“You’re not breaking to slow down here, you’re breaking to put weight at the front of the car so it’s easier to turn in” – my driving instructor shouts to be heard over the Lotus’s engine. “Pull it in here. No, more! I want to feel it rumbling over the curb”. I’m driving a Lotus Exige around a short circuit at Silverstone – part of a track day I got invited to. Earlier I’d taken a Megane touring car around, and next they were putting me in a Ferrari 430 and at some point on this day, something clicked and I wanted to race cars forever.

I‘ve always liked racing games, sure. I played the popular stuff where you can happily fling a car around a track with the expectation of winning if not on the first go, then at least in a couple of tries – but that day opened my eyes. Racing isn’t about burying the accelerator as much as possible and power-sliding around corners.

A portion of an NWR review...

A lot of care went into the total package, and while there are some AI issues and lack of graphical impressiveness, it's hard not to appreciate what Codemasters and Sumo Digital have managed to cram onto this little game card. But depending on how into F1 you are, your experience may vary.

...it makes for a driving experience that is, for all of its faults, unparalleled on the system. But it can't disguise the fact that this is still a stuttering start for F1 on the 3DS.

F1 2011 is, unfortunately, not the game to remedy matters. Unless you’re a fan of frustrating ugly racers with brutally unrealistic and aggressive opponent AI, we advise that you steer well clear of it. Maybe next year, Codemasters will release the game that F1 fans deserve.

“Codemasters: Birmingham” really doesn’t have the same ring to it as “Eidos: Montreal” or “2K Czech” does it? But despite its inauspicious origins, their F1 2011 is looking pretty snazzy. Also, from my non-F1-caring-about perspective, massively daunting. It reminds me of when F1GP2 came out in 1734, and my tiny brain couldn’t understand why you’d play a game where touching gravel once in three hours was a game over. But that’s because I’m an idiot of the highest order. Check out the launch trailer for the game below.

Last year's well-received F1 2010 was Codemasters doing what Codemasters does best: unadulterated, realistic racing. It was a hard-nosed brute of a title, a world away from the fun but shallow DiRT 2 its stablemate at the time. F1 2010 was an entirely different beast; tough, authentic and laser...

In many ways, F1 2010's arrival last year was something of a Brawn GP moment. While there was understandable anticipation with regards to Codemasters stepping into the cockpit of the stalled F1 video game subgenre, expectations weren't particularly high. So, like Ross Brawn's 'start-up' outfit tha...

Codemasters have already talked about their multiplayer focus for F1 2011. Cynics might think that’s because people were upset about the AI last time out so they’re hoping we’ll replace it all with real people. Imagine that. Your friends may be part of a nefarious plan to improve a game. This new video is all about the co-op championship mode, which will allow you and a friend to enjoy a bitter rivalry disguised as teamwork. Video below, as well as an earlier dev diary which does have some talk about AI.

There is something delightfully old school about the F1 video game franchise. It's largely down to the intricacies of adapting a sport as complex as Formula 1 racing to this medium. Take into account the research, reflexes and technical knowledge an F1 driver has to have running at the back of their...

Codies have let loose a developer diary for their forthcoming F1 2011, which shows off polite Englishmen explaining their work, combined with plenty of healthy-looking game footage. It also reveals that the focus this time is in getting people to play online with “16-player races” and also a co-op campaign mode so that you can play through a season with a team-mate. There’s going to be some fancy racing going on, yes sir. I just hope the launch can be as solid as the Dirt games this time around. The game is out on 23rd December. That diary is below.(more…)
