Bloodrayne: Betrayal, a game we liked quite a bit, has received a permanent price drop on both Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. The price has been lowered from $15 to a more palatable $10, allowing players to see more red for less green. Get it? Because, you know, vampires.

Couldn't bother to shell out $14.99 for WayForward's delightful, 2D action-platformer Bloodrayne: Betrayal? What if we knocked three bucks clean off that price? Well, not us, so much as Sony, who is doing just that for one week on the PlayStation Store.

PSN Play continues with BloodRayne Betrayal, which is excellent -- and not just excellent for a BloodRayne game. It's joined by a game with a more "retail-equivalent" price, and likely no less violence: Rugby 2011.

In addition, there are demos for both, as well as the public debut of the God of War Origins demo. And some nice price drops on Aksys games, including BlazBlue, on PSP.

(Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)

WayForward's BloodRayne: Betrayal doesn't just succeed as a game despite the baggage of the moribund BloodRayne license. WayForward took the franchise fully into "campy" mode, turning the characters and settings into something you're clearly not supposed to take seriously, presented in an incredibly sharp hand-drawn cartoon style. Rayne herself is even kind of uncharacteristically cute.

That presentation is married to a combo-heavy brawler that you must take seriously at all times, at the risk of oft-repeated death. Just surviving the game requires near mastery of Rayne's repertoire; to actually earn a grade higher than "F" in the game's score-based rating system requires ... well, I still have to figure that out.

I have a confession to make. I have absolutely no idea what BloodRayne is about. OK, so there's some sexy vampire lady in the game, and she hunts other vampires. I think. But after hearing a great deal about her mediocre gaming exploits and her terrible film, I gave BloodRayne an indefinite pass in my head. Then I played BloodRayne: Betrayal at this past year's E3, and it left an indelible mark on me as the single biggest surprise of the show...

A few weeks ago, Majesco told us that the XBLA release of BloodRayne: Betrayal had been pushed back to October 6. However, we've heard a new date from someone who ought to know: Rayne herself. The heroic dhampir (or perhaps a PR person under her name) tweeted that the game will be out on XBLA September 7, just one day after the PSN release.

That's great news for XBLA users looking to blow up some fancy vampires with poisonous bites. It's slightly less great news for the PSN Play promotion, which loses the closest thing it had to a timed exclusive. You still get extra "gifts" with the PSN Play pre-order, though.

[Thanks, sacra.]

We wondered whether the "PSN Play" promotion would lead to timed PS3 exclusivity for any of the games within, and our official answer at this point is "yes and no." BloodRayne Betrayal was originally due at the end of August on both PSN and XBLA; it's now due September 6 on PSN. Majesco informed Joystiq that the XBLA version has been bumped to October 5, though the publisher didn't say outright that the Sony deal was the reason.

Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition, however, won't have its release date bumped on either platform as a result of the promotion. Capcom confirmed on Unity that the game is still set for August 23 on PSN and August 24 on XBLA. We have inquiries in with the rest of the PSN Play publishers, and we'll update when we hear back.

We've seen quite a few lovingly illustrated environments in screens and trailers for Bloodrayne: Betrayal, which means we can assume the titular protagonist does a bit of traveling. Tell us, how does she get around while toting a laser cannon that is bigger than she is? Answer that, science.

WayForward is a studio that never slow down. BloodRayne: Betrayal comes out next month on downloadable services, Thor: God of Thunder just came out for DS, and Aliens: Infestation, which Sega and WayForward have been pleading ignorant about for ages, is now a real thing.

Aliens: Infestation, developed for DS and not 3DS, is a side-scrolling shooter created in collaboration with Gearbox Software, who's been crafting Aliens: Colonial Marines. The game features "large-scale versions of some of the most fan-beloved environments of the iconic films," as players recruit and swap between 19 marines.

Some of the iconic environments mentioned in the announcement release include the Sulaco, the Derelict ship, and LV-426.

Aliens: Infestation is scheduled for a September release, the same month Sega had originally been scheduled to release both Shinobi and Crush 3D for 3DS. Both were delayed yesterday.

What's black and red and green all over? The latest batch of BloodRayne: Betrayal screens! With the exception of one blood explosion, the screens are surprisingly nonviolent. Then again, we suppose all that green stuff could be soylent green.

#bloodrayne Now that I've gotten past the shock of the initial reveal and the awe of the first trailer, I'm done referring to BloodRayne: Betrayal as a game that's trying to be Castlevania. With each new screenshot I find myself wishing there was a Castlevania that looked this good. More »

Nobody was really asking for BloodRayne to come back, but putting WayForward in charge of BloodRayne: Betrayal, a high-definition 2D beat 'em up, is one way to get people's attention.

Majesco announced over Twitter when you'll have a chance to play BloodRayne: Betrayal/bloodrayne-betrayal/61-34625/, too: August 30. Technically, it's both August 30 and August 31, with the game first arriving on PlayStation Network, then coming over to Xbox Live Arcade.

"It will be bloody," claims Majesco.

Hey, I'm down with that.

Time is fluid, as we're reminded again by the announcement of Bloodrayne: Betrayal's late August launch. Originally expected for "early August," the game now has August 30 and 31 launch dates for PSN and XBLA, respectively.

Developer WayForward has reimagined BloodRayne for the better, as we and the company recently detailed on The Joystiq Show. From what we've seen so far, this is a BloodRayne that doesn't suck.

Are you familiar with the developer Way Forward? If you're not a Nintendo-centric gamer, chances are you have no idea what this studio has done. This is the developer responsible for cult hits like Shantae and the revisiting of A Boy and His Blob. In fact, from Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color to the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS, Way Forward rarely strays from the Nintendo sphere. That is until now...

BloodRayne: Betrayal will eviscerate PSN and XBLA during the first weeks of August, representatives for Majesco told us at E3. We had specific dates for both consoles, but neither fit the standard release day schedule for a digitally distributed title and reps changed the date to "early August." It will cost $15 (800 MSP).

Developer WayForward has completely reinvented the concept of BloodRayne for the better, saying that Majesco pretty much gave them carte blanche to make the license their own. If you've never heard of BloodRayne, this is a great arcade slasher introduction. If you've heard of BloodRayne, forget what you know. If you enjoyed BloodRayne before, sorry.

#bloodthirstylady When BloodRayne: Betrayal was announced so close to April 1, we met the reveal with a healthy dose of scepticism. A 3D brawler turned into a 2D platformer? Seemed a little weird, since it normally works the other way around. More »

The first screenshot of WayForward's XBLA/PSN action game, Bloodrayne: Betrayal, is pretty confusing. Based only on the screenshot, it would appear that an explosion of human blood is okay to show, but Bloodrayne herself has been censored, suggesting that her appearance is even more offensive than that of a guy who has been cut in half.

However, the Facebook page at which this screen was posted offers much-needed context -- Rayne's character design is planned as a separate reveal. We'd keep an air sickness bag next to our computers anyway, just in case it turns out to be worse than a bloodsplosion.

On the official Facebook page for BloodRayne: Betrayal, the upcoming downloadable spinoff of Majesco's dormant last-gen action series, a commenter asked about BloodRayne: The Shroud for 3DS. The mysterious title made its first and only appearance on a list of in-development 3DS games, which was released by Nintendo during E3 last year. Nonetheless, The Shroud's brief unveiling had made enough of a lasting impression on one fan to warrant a question about the game's status some ten months later.

"The 3DS title is currently on hold," responded the administrator of the BloodRayne Facebook page. "We'll be sure to share any news when it's available." A representative for Majesco confirmed with Joystiq that "BloodRayne 3DS is currently on hold for now," but did not provide further information about the game.

Following a pair of BloodRayne titles from developer Terminal Reality for last-gen consoles and a Playboy cover spread, the franchise has stumbled along in a trilogy of Uwe Boll films. A PSP sequel was announced in 2005, but eventually abandoned by Majesco. Betrayal, scheduled to launch on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade this summer, would be the first BloodRayne game released since the 2005 PC port of BloodRayne 2.
