Capcom's upcoming fantasy role-playing game Dragon's Dogma isn't interesting at all. It
might not even be good.

Writers in the gaming press have a tendency to go easy on in-development games. Readers love jumping to conspiracy-theory conclusions about our positivity but, the truth is, we want games to be good and interesting just as much as you do. And so we give them the benefit of the doubt when we write our previews. So what's different with Dragon's Dogma?

#capcom No matter the year and no matter the games, Capcom always has the best booth at TGS. Forgoing the slick corporate presence of its rivals, it instead opts for elaborate themed demo kiosks, in 2011 deciding the presence of both Dragon's Dogma and 117 Monster Hunter titles gave it the perfect in to build a ton of awesome model beasties. #dragonsdogma If you thought Dragon's Dogma looked like Capcom trying to make its own Dragon Age, you are correct. And from what I saw of the game yesterday (and given people's reaction to Dragon Age II), that may be a very good thing. More »

Dragon's Dogma lets you recruit AI "pawns" to fill out your adventuring party. You get to customize one of your own, which can then travel into other players' games via "rifts," and vice versa. Learn more about the monster fodder in this video.

#dragonsdogma Built with single-player story and fluid action combat in mind, Dragon's Dogma wasn't a good fit for online cooperative play. Instead, Capcom came up with an all new way for players to share their play experience — the pawn system. More »

Dragon's Dogma may not arrive on store shelves until 2012, but today Capcom revealed its final cover art: Dragon's Dogma is an open-world adventure in which an ancient dragon awakens and chooses the player to take under its wing. The mystery as to why the dragon chooses you is the drive of the story. Click here to see the PS3 version...

Dragon's Dogma remains a bit of an enigma. We know it's a new "realistic fighting fantasy" game in which you face off against typically Capcom-huge monsters with swords, bows and whatever else comes to gauntlet-clad hand. We know it's open-world, and that it's got some hot talent working on it. You can climb up enemies, which is always cool. But we still haven't seen that much of it in action, and there are still several mysteries surrounding its structure and plot...

Here's one of the many creatures you and your team will probably fail to defeat in Dragon's Dogma: the Golem. Enjoy looking at it in stirring artwork and screenshots now, before you spend the better part of 2012 screaming obscenities as it lasers your face.

In the beginning of Dragon’s Dogma, you are immediately confronted by a dragon that rips out your still-beating heart and flies away. Your quest is to track down the dragon and discover why he stole your heart and why you can still hear his voice echoing in your head.

At PlayStation’s E3 livestream, Product Manager Mike Schmitt gave a live demo of our E3 build of Dragon’s Dogma. The dragon rears its head, breathes a spout of fire and flies off, paving the way for an intense battle with Orcs and Harpies. It also introduces the Chimera, a monstrosity that combines the attributes of a serpent, goat, and lion. The E3 demo introduces the gameplay concept of “pawns,” or computer-controlled companions that aid you in the fight.

Dragon’s Dogma is not an RPG. The development team has previously masterminded the Devil May Cry games, Resident Evil 4, Killer 7, and many more. This team likes action, and that fact shines in Dragon’s Dogma — a game with fast, stylized combat in an open world filled with massive beasts. This is Capcom’s first open-world game and is powered by the powerful in-house engine MTFramework, responsible for other PS3 games including Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2. That allows us to have an open world without sacrificing the graphical quality you expect from Capcom games.

Aside from the fast action, we’re also introducing new mechanic that adds an extra dose of mayhem. At any time in the game, you can grab enemies, large or small, and interact with them. If it’s an Orc, you can grab him and slay him. Once he’s dead, you can pick him up and use him as bait to lure a soaring Griffin to the ground. When the Griffin lands, you’re able to tackle the beast and start stabbing. When it takes off, hold on for dear life. Eventually, you’ll set fire to the Griffin’s wings, sending you and the beast crashing to the ground.

#dogmatic Dragon's Dogma sounds rotten. It doesn't roll off the tongue, and it's ridiculous. It sounds like a title created by someone who just got a Thesaurus. If these screenshots are anything to go by, though, the game looks stunning. More »

We were a little apprehensive when we heard this new Dragon's Dogma trailer was about fighting a griffin. We like Griffin! He's a nice guy and a great writer, and we don't particularly care to see him sworded by some beefy medieval type.

If you're also sensitive about seeing Joystiq editors face fantasy combat scenarios, allow us to calm your nerves: it's actually the mythological flying creature that is the subject of the Dogmatic beatdown, not our colleague. Phew!
