Pandora's Tower is a three-legged race of the most predictable kind — one leg desperate to veer to the right, but constantly tripped up by complications on the left.

...as interesting as the mechanics and narrative pursuits prove to be, the daunting task of all those towers left me feeling weary about the entire endeavor by the time I’d cleared the fourth, which finds me thinking something I rarely consider: that this game is too damn long for its own good—stretching its chain a bit too thin as it were.

Compared to the other Operation Rainfall games, Pandora's Tower lacks the fine-tuned design of Xenoblade Chronicles and the ambition of The Last Story. What it does offer, though, is enough to warrant a recommendation, namely its fun dungeons, great bosses, an enjoyable chain-flinging gimmick, and emotional warmth in the relationship between Aeron and Elena.

It's hard to say for certain what a platform's last game will be, but it's pretty easy to guess what a platform's last noteworthy release will be. I'm sure the endless parade of impulse-buy, waggletastic Wii shovelware will continue to trickle out for a while yet, but the last significant Wii release for North America looks to be Pandora's Tower.

As the last of the three Operation Rainfall games brought over from Europe (via Japan), it was bound to garner plenty of attention, regardless of its quality. The good news is that Pandora's Tower deserves it.

Comparisons have been made to everything from "The Legend of Zelda" to "Shadow of the Colossus," and while those aren't too far off base, "Pandora's Tower" finds its own unique niche that JRPG fans, that are still firing up their Wiis, will truly appreciate.

Pandora's Tower is a bittersweet end to the Wii's life: a taste of the kind of software that could have carried the console during those slow months. As it stands, it won't be anything more that an engaging action RPG with a clever hook. But I suppose I can live with that.

The deadest genre just continues to get deader as three—yes, three!—new Japanese role-playing games hit U.S. shores today. There's Pandora's Tower, an action-RPG that might just be the last big Wii release ever. End of an era. I've spent a couple hours with Pandora's Tower, and I think it's fun so far, although I wish it was in high definition. It's hard to really appreciate the act of killing monsters and feeding their flesh to a little girl when it's rendered in 480p. Atlus is releasing their 3DS remake of Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers today as well, if you're into first-person dungeon-crawlers. It feels rather antiquated compared to Atlus's last big release, Etrian Odyssey IV—probably because Soul Hackers was originally released in 1997—but it's interesting nonetheless. The third game wasn't made in Japan, but it's a Japanese RPG nonetheless: Book One of Dragon Fantasy, an episodic series designed to emulate the old 8-bit classics. It's out for PS3 and Vita today. It's Tuesday, April 16, and this has been your JRPG public service announcement.

In some respects, Pandora's Tower shares similarities with Shadow of the Colossus, and while it doesn't ascend to the high barometer of that game, it is worthy of the comparison.

I still can't believe that we're going to get Pandora's Tower in the states. XSEED is really going out of their way to lend support to Nintendo fans! If somehow the Japanese and European coverage of the game wasn't enough, you can now check out the official North American website. Screens, art, details and more await!

The long awaited North American release of Pandora's Tower finally is finally upon us. Publisher XSEED has announced that the Wii RPG will finally launch on April 16 for $40. For those who haven't been keeping track, Pandora's Tower tells the story of a girl cursed to become a monster. The only cure? Munching down pieces of nasty monster flesh. It's a love story.

Pandora's Tower, the last game in the original Operation Rainfall campain - and likely the last major Wii retail release, is coming out this April, XSEED revealed.

The new trailer released today details the storyline, and introduces the character Elena, who you fight to save by braving the tower. Somehow, the trailer manages to simultaneously give the story emotional weight, and convey that it's about feeding chunks of twelve giant monsters to a sick girl.

Platform: Wii

Rating Category: Teen

Content Descriptors: Blood and Gore, Mild Suggestive Themes, Violence

Rating Summary: This is an action role-playing game (RPG) in which players assume the role of a young warrior trying to save a woman from a terrible curse. Players explore various dungeons and battle fantastical creatures in order to obtain “beast flesh” for the woman (Elena) to ingest. Players use swords, scythes, and a hooked chain to slash enemies in battle. The frenetic combat is accompanied by purple blood-splatter effects, cries of pain, and the extraction of items (including hearts) from the beasts. There are several depictions of Elena chewing on the purple beast hearts after battle. During the course of the game, female characters are sometimes shown wearing revealing outfits (e.g., moderate cleavage and buttocks).

Publisher XSEED isn't looking at bringing out a Pandora's Tower special edition when the game finally reaches North America this spring. The Wii JRPG did get one in Europe, which came with an art book and steel case, but XSEED tweeted that this time around it had to "go a bit more streamlined." That streamlining may still incorporate a reversible cover and manual art, but we'll have to wait and see.

Pandora's Tower is the last of the Operation Rainfall Wii JRPGs to get North American localization, and is now available for pre-order at GameStop, priced $39.99. Its release represents a comprehensive victory for the 2011 grassroots campaign, and we suspect those involved are just happy to see it over here, special edition or no.

Publisher XSEED has come to the rescue for American Wii owners again. Once thought lost to the dungeons of Nintendo localization, XSEED will bring Pandora's Tower to North America this spring. Pandora's Tower tells the story of a hero tasked with saving a young girl from a terrible curse. The only cure: feeding her lots of freshly slain monster flesh. Check out the trailer above (made for the European release last year), for the gritty, nasty details.

Last year, to the dismay of many fans, Nintendo infamously stated it had "no plans" to localize three major Japanese Wii RPGs, The Last Story, Pandora's Tower and Xenoblade Chronicles (though it did eventually localize the latter). Now it seems XSEED has made a habit of snatching up discarded Nintendo properties in North America, last year localizing The Last Story, which went on to be its most successful game ever.

While some of the elements of the game are not fully realized or well implemented, the different parts combine into an incredibly enjoyable whole. The story, while it contains some flawed characterization, is quite touching, and the gameplay is a wonderful mix of intense battles and entertaining puzzle solving. It's truly a shame that this game has not been announced for North America, as it's one that definitely deserves it.

All told, Pandora's Tower is a pretty average game that has an interesting mechanic in the Oraclos Chain and some decent execution overall but is largely notable by association and circumstance rather than on its own merits. It shows some ambition from a developer who is otherwise known for games based on comic licences and while it doesn't hit all the marks you could do worse if you're really desperate for something to play on your Wii.

If you’re into something that doesn’t demand a massive time sink from the player, nor devotion to learning it’s intricacies, this one is just for you. The story and combat alone are worth the price of admission. An unexpected and unfounded gem in the Wii’s library.
