Many will look at Pandora’s Tower as being the weakest of the three Wii RPGs, with Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story easily making Ganbarion and Nintendo’s effort seem unworthy of attention. However, such a judgement would be unjust, since this Action RPG takes a totally different slant, offering an almost 3D Castlevania and Metroid feel to proceedings, mixing in a pleasant love story and a brilliantly smooth battle system that will widen its appeal. Pandora’s Tower certainly can stand proud amongst its fellow genre stablemates.

It’s a pity that the experience, most notably the action segments that take up a large part of the 12-15 hour adventure, are partially undermined by technical failings: as a result it’s questionable whether many will engage in multiple playthroughs in pursuit of happier endings. This title has much to recommend it, as long as you’re willing to look beyond some of its faults.

Towards the end of a console's life you often see games that really push the hardware but rely on familiar ideas. Pandora's Tower is quite the opposite: it's a game full of technical foibles that nonetheless overcomes its visual weaknesses to offer something a little different. That's not to say tha...

This is an average-to-good hack and slash that is unfortunately hobbled by some off-the-shelf RPG elements and a well-meaning - if ultimately tiresome - girlfriend management system. Pandora's Tower is well worth playing for its brilliant and inventive boss battles, arrestingly emotive moments of flesh-guzzling and for its stunning, amazingly varied scenery, but beware the tedious and generic hack-and-slash nature of the moments in between.

In Pandora's Tower we have a compelling resource management game that continually drives you to do better, think harder, play smarter. If this is to be the Wii's last hurrah, then at least it's not going out sitting on its backside.

Don't get too excited -- there's still no North American release of Pandora's Tower to speak of. But in the meantime you can still enjoy this (kind of gross) English trailer for the Japanese export, coming out April 13 on the Wii in Europe.

#pandorastower When one great RPG was released only in Japan, people were annoyed. When two great RPGs were released only in Japan, they became legitimately upset. But when three great RPGs were denied to them, they got organized. This was the birth of Operation Rainfall, a public—and as it turns out completely successful—petition to get these three Wii-only RPGs localized in the West. More »

#pandorastower The Wii has a family friendly image to the point where you almost expect every Wii game to be appropriate for all ages. Sure there are games like House of the Dead: Overkill and MadWorld, but they are rarities. Who would expect any kind of questionable content in a Zelda-esque adventure game? More »

Pandora's Tower is the next European Wii RPG release for us all to be jealous of. Following this month's The Last Story, Pandora's Tower will arrive in Europe on April 13, ensuring an oddly impressive 2012 Wii lineup for the region.

Pandora's Tower is an action-RPG game in which soldier "Aeron" traverses a series of towers to gather monster meat with his magical sword and chain, and then feeds the aforementioned flesh to his cursed friend Elena. Yikes.

Speaking of "yikes," Nintendo chose to mark the announcement with a set of grotesque Pandora's Tower-themed Valentine e-cards. You can view them in the gallery or download them from Nintendo, for any relationships you need to end.

Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: GANBARION
Release date: 2012

Break a curse that threatens to transform a beloved friend into a horrific beast in the stylish, dark and captivating Pandora’s Tower for Wii.

Pandora’s Tower blends RPG elements with action-packed gameplay as you assume the role of Aeron, an Athosian soldier facing a deeply personal and emotionally charged mission. With your friend, Elena, bound to a grave fate that is causing her to mutate into a demonic abomination, you’ll feel the pressure of time and the rush of accomplishment as you take up the fight to eradicate the spreading evil that has gripped her. To add to the drama of this melancholic and unconventional adventure, it is only by consuming the remains of monsters Aeron has slain that the cruel curse binding Elena can be reversed.

The world of Pandora’s Tower features 13 gruelling environments to tackle, each one based within a tower structure, and each one home to grim monsters whose flesh takes on a macabre significance in the game’s engrossing plotline. Enemies can be attacked in two ways – with a bladed weapon offering hard-hitting results up close, or with a magical chain possessing uses that extend far beyond overcoming opponents. Aimed by pointing the Wii Remote at the screen, the chain can be used to latch onto elements of the environment, allowing the player to reach new heights, activate levers or pull down parts of their surroundings. The chain also acts as the ultimate restraint when tackling monsters, allowing for innovative combat techniques as you engage in fast and furious real-time battles.

As you progress, the weight of Elena’s predicament will spur you on, her physical appearance becoming more grotesque the longer it takes you to overcome each tower. Minutes matter as you race to bring her the remains of your foes, an on-screen indicator changing colour to warn you of how advanced the mutation is becoming in your absence. When you’re with Elena, your interactions will determine the strength of your overall relationship, a bond which could vary dramatically and will result in the game coming to one of numerous alternate endings.

Enter the shadowy world of Pandora’s Tower on Wii for a novel adventure experience that demands your devotion as a player. As time ticks away, the fate of your friend grows all the more unthinkable and the effects of evil stare you in the face even as you fight to suppress them. Do you have the heart for a fight that is guaranteed to get personal?

Experience a dark and original RPG adventure, where you must break a curse that threatens to transform your friend into a demonic beast.
Explore and survive 13 towers, defeating enemies and traversing your environment with a combination of swordplay and by using a magical chain that boasts multiple uses.
Feel the weight of a dynamic relationship in which your actions have a direct visible effect on your friend, Elena. Race against time to save her.
