Last year we reported on Super Chibi Knight, an adorable-looking adventure in the Zelda 2 mold that's being developed by Abobo's Big Adventure creator Nick Pasto and his 8-year-old daughter Bella. Nick's on task for the programming nitty-gritty, while Bella provides the voice of the Chibi hero, sketches for character and weapon designs, and she's a valuable playtester - not least because she names the excellent Spelunky, Super Meat Boy, and Castle Crashers in her list of gaming favorites.

Some eight months on, Super Chibi Knight is halfway along in development, and while it's stayed stuck on Steam Greenlight since then, Pasto (senior) tweeted this morning that it's currently ranked #2 in the queue. Everything's looking good for a summer 2014 release for this father-and-daughter game, except for the last bit of funding to get it past the finish line. So, Pasto's turned to Kickstarter with the relatively modest goal of $6,000 to get Super Chibi Knight funded.

The fundraising campaign's already notched a third of that goal at the time of writing, with a healthy 32 days left on the clock. Also, if you want to pledge just a single dollar, Pasto says that if he ever has the pleasure of meeting you in person, you're guaranteed a high five there and then. More guaranteed high fives in the world can only be a good thing. [Image: Nick Pasto]

The infernal Greenlight machine rolls on, devastating the environment and breaking hearts without missing a beat. It doesn’t care what gets in its way. It knows only one pursuit: middling-to-popular indie games. Its main fuel source? People. Well, their votes, anyway. And also some arcane fusion of press reviews, crowdfunding successes, sales on other platforms, angel dust, kitten tears, and a signed copy of The Who’s greatest hits album. But hey, I can’t fault the system’s invisible, probably mutant hand for selecting the likes of Galactic Princess, Ultimate General: Gettysburg, Hover: Revolt of Gamer, and Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries. The full 50-strong batch is below.

Developers Treasure are masters of the shoot ‘em up though and Ikaruga is among their greatest works. That would be reason enough to recommend it – a superb entry in a genre under-represented on PC – but there’s more than mastery at work here. Applying the sort of twist that could snap a neck, Radiant Silvergun had already shown Treasure’s willingness to reinvent and subvert the traditional shoot ‘em up without cracking the mould completely. Even though a decade has passed since its original release, Ikaruga may still be the ultimate expression of the developer’s refined risk and reward mechanics. Here’s wot I think.

Antisquad is Now Available on Steam Early Access!

Widely known in small circles as AntiSquad, they are a military tactical response unit. These hardened military professionals, tired of bureaucracy, politics and serving the armed forces, have established a private paramilitary formation located in south United States. Being true military professionals, they periodically execute contracts for jobs that may not be considered clean.

The Team consists of many complex individuals with their own back story, but they do not shun mercenary applicants. Members of the team are idealists; they dwell on moral issues, as well as question blind nationalism, etc. AntiSquad strongly differ from military units. They truly are a bunch of contradictions put together - heartfelt cynics, gregarious egoists, aggressive pacifists, and phlegmatic rebels all under one banner.

Free to Play, Valve's feature-length documentary following three top players competing for $1 million in the first Dota 2 championships, premieres online on March 19, directly on Steam. It's categorized as a "free to play" item, but a Free to Play Competitor's Pack for Dota 2 launches on the same day, and 25 percent of the proceeds from that bundle benefit the contributors and players in the film.

Free to Play follows Dota 2 players Dendi, HYHY and Fear as they prepare for and compete in the first installment of The International championships held in 2011. If you don't want to know who won, do not click this link. Valve announced the documentary in August 2012.

For those in San Francisco, Valve is holding a public screening of Free To Play at The Castro Theatre on March 18 at 8PM PT, followed by a Q&A with the creators and "special guests." Tickets run $25 apiece and are available here. [Image: Valve]

Indie developer Dejobaan Games calls Massachusetts home and has produced a slew of oddly-named games such as AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!!, a game about base jumping off buildings in Boston, and Drop that Beat like an Ugly Baby, a game that turns your MP3 files into explorable cityscapes. Aside from Drunken Robot Pornography, the studio is currently collaborating with Girls Like Robots developer Ziba Scott on Elegy for a Dead World - a game where players must explore the ruins of alien civilizations and share their histories with others through Steam Workshop. Long-revered shoot-em-up Ikaruga is available now on Windows PC for the first time, after Treasure brought it to Steam this week. The newly tweaked PC version is based on the 2008 Xbox Live Arcade port, so Xbox 360 controller support and screen rotating between vertical and horizontal play are included. The fee for entry to Treasure's bullet hell is $10 in North America, and £7/9 euros across the ocean.

The arcade classic, which debuted back in 2001, is centered around its polarity-shifting mechanic. Players use light and dark weapons to take down ships of the opposite color, but they can also absorb same-colored bullets to power homing lasers. Ikaruga is also famed for its difficulty, and as if to drive that home, the Steam version features a new Double Play mode that tasks you with beating the two-player game with just one controller.

Good luck with that. [Image: Treasure]
