#qube At first blush, the environs and first-person perspective of puzzle platformer Q.U.B.E. might look familiar. The game tasks you with manipulating a series of colored three-dimensional cubes that have various effects on the environment. It looks to me like living inside a Rubik's Cube and Stephen Totilo liked it when he laid eyes on it this summer. Q.U.B.E.'s the first game supported by Indie Fund—the collective of all-star independent developers—to make it out into the wild, so there's a strong chance that it'll be worth your cash. More »

Q.U.B.E. is Now Available on Steam and 15% off until Friday January 13th 10AM PST.

Set in a mysterious and abstract sterile environment, Q.U.B.E. (Quick Understanding of Block Extrusion) is a first-person puzzle game that challenges players to navigate each level by manipulating coloured cubes that surround them. There's little to go on as the game begins - the player is dropped into an all-white room with few instructions, and simply has to figure their way out. The tone of game changes as the player finds small and big alterations to their environment, supported by an original score, inviting each player to let their imagination take over as to where they might be. Through experimentation and discovery, players will progress through an ever-evolving series of cube puzzles that will challenge them with logic, physics, platforming.

We’ve already seen some minor willy-waving from Valve regarding the bumper 2011 they had with Steam, but now they’re full-on doing The Crab and asking you to admire their big, shiny guns. After ten years in this business I’m a bit bored of saying “only idiots think PC gaming is dead”, so I’ll let this do it for me.

Below: many statistics, and a lie.(more…)

Find yourself with an undeniable pang of nostalgia after today's announcement that Firaxis is working on a new XCOM strategy title? Maybe you've never heard of X-COM before and want to see what all the fuss is about? Perhaps you're confused because the original games were called "X-COM" and the new ones are called "XCOM?"

Steam has you covered on the first two fronts, at very least. Today only, the download service is offering all five of the original X-COM titles for a paltry $5.09. Alternately, if you're really trying to forget X-COM: Enforcer, you can pick up individual titles at $1.69 a pop. And yes, we're just as confused as you are about the lack of a dashed title in the new iterations of the franchise.

Steam’s daily deal sees the complete X-COM bundle reduced to £3.05. It’s as if they think the whole internet is talking about the series. You probably don’t want Enforcer and Interceptor but if you don’t have them, you almost definitely want the other three. They are £1.01 each. I still play the original on a regular basis and find it laughable that it’s available for a pound and a penny. HA!

As the lovelies at PC Gamer have observed, Steam passed 5 million concurrent users on the 2nd of January, a spike that seems largely powered by the popularity of Skyrim and the Christmas sale. Check it out on the Steam stats page. Valve confirmed that Steam had passed 30 million active accounts as of October 2010, so it’s probably a bit bigger than that by now.

The Kid sat down to write about Bastion, his mind empty like a soldier's wallet. Where to begin? What to say? The game wasn't a blockbuster production, but it was beautiful and expertly executed, and an epic concept delivered by a team that knew its limitations. When there isn't an army of artists, engineers, writers and coders to impress those critical gasbags, you put your vision on display.

Bastion's dynamic narration is to be the game's long-lasting cultural hook. A smooth and comforting voice relays events, but doesn't stop at exposition. There was very little the narrator didn't have a comment for, be it weapon combinations or that moment the kid simply starts smashing everything in sight.

Much like "Still Alive" did double duty as Portal's end and as its revelation, Bastion takes a similar opportunity in its credits to deliver the haunting "Setting Sail, Coming Home." A combination of themes that become familiar to players through the game, the song delivered the type of emotional conclusion that even the best cutscenes rarely offer.
