Following rumours circulated by The Verge, Valve has told Kotaku that they are experimenting with biometrics and connecting PCs to TVs. However: “All of that is stuff that we’re working on, but it’s a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware.” Marketing VP Doung Lombardi said: “We’re prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we’re building boxes to test that on.” Lombardi denied that the boxes were prototype of a home console, and instead suggested it was simply a part of the current Steam development process, allowing them to make it easier for us to play PC games on our TV. It’s not a denial that Valve would ever head in that direction, and they’ve reiterated that they might ship hardware eventually, but the purported “Steam Box” (okay, Steam Engine, if you like) looks like hot air for now.

Valve has quashed rumors that it is developing a console-like "Steam Box" hardware standard for its Steam service. Valve's Doug Lombardi told Kotaku that the company is "building boxes" to test its "Big Picture" initiative, which will make Steam play nice with PC setups that use a television set as a display. Lombardi also noted that Valve is experimenting with things like biometric feedback, which was another aspect of the console rumor, but that such experimentation is "a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware."

That said, Lombardi did not dismiss the possibility of Valve-developed hardware in the future.

Gabe Newell has an estimated net worth of $1.5 billion, ranking 854th of the 1,226 billionaires in the world. Normally a video game exec being ranked 854th in something wouldn't matter much, but when that rank is in the "these people have at least one billion dollars" list, even the losers are news. Newell owns more than 50 percent of Valve, which has an estimated enterprise value of $3 billion -- conservatively -- meaning Newell is actually probably worth more than $1.5 billion.

If Valve begins a Kickstarter campaign for Half-Life, Portal or Left 4 Dead 3 any time soon, perhaps then outrage would be warranted.

Yeah.

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack!, the acclaimed indie platformer for Vita, is about to become the acclaimed indie platformer for PC. During a GDC meeting, developer DrinkBox Studios showed me the PC port of the game, which trades touchscreen support for mouse control with the "telekinesis" ability.

DrinkBox is still working on the port, so details of the release plans are uncertain. The developer plans both PC and Mac versions; either the Mac version will hit soon after the Windows release, or they'll appear simultaneously. Mutant Blobs Attack will also support Steam Achievements. Naturally, it'll support features like "absorbing terrified people" and "otherworldly magnet powers."

A lot can change in six months. As of last summer, Valve had planned to offer cross-play for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on the PC, Mac, and PS3. But based on what it's learned from the beta, Valve has decided to strip the functionality in favor of offering constant updates for players on the PC and Mac.

"The beta has proved we want to update not just the beta, but the game itself post-launch frequently on the PC," Valve's Chet Faliszek revealed to Joystiq. "To do that we need to separate the platforms so one doesn't hamstring the other. So for that, we have removed the idea of cross-platform play -- essentially make all platforms stronger by not mixing them."

If you would like to get into the ongoing Counter-Strike: Global Offensive beta, fill out Valve's survey. If you want cross-play back in the game, wait to sign one of the dozens of online petitions currently being created.

I am sure there’ll be more comment on this in the week (especially if it is announced at GDC), but while I was compiling the Sunday Papers I realised that the The Verge reporting that Valve could be making a “Steam Box” gaming console probably warrants its own thread: “Apparently meetings were held during CES to demo a hand-built version of the device to potential partners. We’re told that the basic specs of the Steam Box include a Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GPU. The devices will be able to run any standard PC titles, and will also allow for rival gaming services (like EA’s Origin) to be loaded up.”

Obviously this is largely speculation and hearsay, so to be taken with a hefty pinch of internet-salt, but it’s a fascinating possible next move in the console wars, with everything basically becoming a PC. The idea that it will allow for other services to be run on it is the particularly interesting point, to my mind, because it allows internal competition in the way that consoles usually do not.

Whether you are a fan of Team Fortress 2 or The Elder Scrolls V: Skryim, youve probably discovered some of the countless talented authors in the Steam Workshop and wished that you could keep track of the new stuff they are creating. Well, now you can! For any item, you can click View all shared files to see what else the author has created, and then choose to follow that author. Following someone in the Workshop will let you easily discover the latest items and mods that they create, which is accessible through the Followed Authors filter on the right side of the Workshop. If youre just getting started with the Workshop, let us point out a few of the more than 5,000+ authors that have been busy contributing.

On the Team Fortress 2 side, [WDZ] The Ronin and [HoV] Psyke have been busily collaborating on dozens of items, including this sweet hat, which you might recognize as the Brown Bomber. Meanwhile, Svdl has been involved in the creation of over 70 items and seen his items One-Man Army, Snapped Pupil, and Your Worst Nightmare become available in the game. Plus, following will let us see if Tex ever submits a follow up to the successful neck-wear Crocodile Smile.

A few of the authors in the Skyrim Workshop that were excited to see more from include, LtMattmoo, Cliffworms, and Arthmoor. LtMattmoo has been busy making mods to improve horses, armor, and giving you the ability to camp out under the stars. Meanwhile Cliffworms has been at the mixing board, fine-tuning the audio across the dungeons and wilderness of Skyrim. Were definitely looking forward to his upcoming Civilization and Special Events modules. And Arthmoor has given us the ability to ride horses right into cities and to start a new life to experience Skyrim all over again.

In other news, its been a little over three weeks since the Workshop for Skyrim was unveiled and gamers could start subscribing to mods directly through Steam. In that time, gamers have collectively subscribed to mods an astonishing 5,566,006 times and counting. Its incredible to see so many talented individuals and teams sharing their passion with the community.

Other recent additions and updates to the Workshop:
There is now an author tag next to comments where a workshop author is replying to comments left on their page. The information that comes up when you hover over an item in browse view now includes whether you are subscribed and if any friends have added that item to their favorites. There are new filter options in the right column to see your friends favorites as well as your own favorites and subscribed files.
