Poor old Craigypops. He was so looking forward to X: Rebirth. But wot he got was a buggy mess of a poorly conceived game, and one in such a state he couldn’t see a way out for the project. Developers Egosoft are hoping otherwise, and have released a trailer explaining the fixes and changes that are new in the next patch.

Sounds like the promising-looking space sim X Rebirth is a total mess. Rock Paper Shotgun's Craig Pearson has played a good amount of the game and he's reporting rampant bugs, crashes and worse. Our own Luke Plunkett hasn't played quite as much, but reports a similar experience. Developer Egosoft has apologized, saying that they're doing what they can to fix problems as fast as possible. A bummer all around.Read more...

X Rebirth was the one game in the current glut of space adventures that I was certain would work. After all, Egosoft has spent the last decade making the most visible and complex space games on the PC. They know how to do this. They also know that the X series has been built for people with an innate understanding of how to play their open-world adventures. X Rebirth was supposed to be a game as complex and as malleable as their previous games, but one that was accessible to everyone. It’s neither of those, and in trying to figure out how to make it work for everyone, it’s gone horribly, completely, utterly wrong. Everything I wrote in my Impressions piece still stands, so if you haven’t read it I’d take a look at it. I’ve spent 30 hours trying to find something functional in what they’ve released, and now I really need a hug. (more…)

X: Rebirth made Craig sad. Given that all we at RPS want to do is defend Craig and keep him safe from the harsh realities of this slowly rotting world, we were fully prepared to launch a volley of our most devastating starfighters at developer Egosoft. In practice, this would have meant tying bricks to a bunch of paper airplanes – the exact science of which has thus far proven somewhat… illusive. However, fortunately for our overtaxed, underpaid R&D department (made up of John and Craig’s cat Dex and a drawing of a scientist), Egosoft has gone and issued an apology. It’s also promising fixes in both the short and long terms, ranging from vicious bug squashings to overhauls of AI, menus, and – thank goodness – the addition of some sort of autopilot option. Back to the hangars, 45th paper airplane fleet. You won’t be burying your brick-flattened brothers today.

Drop the DualShock 4 for a minute - you've got an entire universe to explore. This week marks Egosoft's return to its cult-favorite space simulator franchise with the release of X: Rebirth, a PC game that can now be found on Steam for $50.

X Rebirth is a typical Egosoft game: complex, big, broken in all kinds of ways. I’ve been playing it a bit, as you probably expected. I’ll have a Wot I Think early next week, and you should at least wait until then before thinking about buying it, because thus far it’s been a bit of a mess. Here’s what the first few hours have taught me.(more…)

Alright, so this is how it’s going to be, is it? Craig was Scottish and loved space games. Graham’s Scottish so everyone assumes he must love space games too, right? You’d be racist if Scotland was a race. And if I didn’t love space games. But I do.

X: Rebirth is very exciting, it is being released tomorrow, and now there is a launch trailer below.(more…)

Space is so big that you could fit everything else inside it and still have room to spare. I know that because a Neil DeGrasse Tycoon image that I found on an internet forum told me that it was so. Who needs research grants? Look at this, for instance. You wouldn’t learn that in a lab. I’m not sure if X Rebirth will simulate such wonders but it does have a lot of space to explore and the video below shows how long range scanners will help players to discover the exciting parts.

Just the other day I gave you all the gift of a new trailer for X Rebirth, and Egosoft has followed that up with a few new screenshots. I was in two minds about posting them: I am in danger of dragging everyone down into the gravitational pull of my personal excitement, and should probably stop making words about it, but then I clicked on them and my instant reaction was to share. They are very pretty, particularly the one with the asteroids. So here they are, a gallery of gorgeous space graphics.(more…)

Come November 15, X Rebirth resurrects Egosoft's cult-favorite series of space simulations, though as you can see from this trailer the simulation doesn't go quite so far as to eliminate physically-unlikely fiery balls of death erupting from busted spaceships.

The thing that surprised me the most during my playthrough of a tiny section of X Rebirth was the combat. It was, admittedly, a combat focused demonstration with a nippy ship, but when I wasn’t breaking the game by dodging the story and hunting around the station for fun things to do, being dragged into the space battles wasn’t a drag at all. It was fun. X’s usually treacley controls were no more, and some of the combat tweaks means you have to think your way around some of the bigger battles. It was encouragingly spam free. As is the trailer below, which shows off some of the mighty spacebiff’s in Egosoft’s upcoming game.(more…)

There was always going to be a catch when I finally got my hands on X Rebirth. On the evidence of the previous games, I’d need about a week to get myself settled comfortably in the cockpit of Egosoft’s vast space sim, and I was never going to get that. The demo that was sent to me was the Gamescom floor demo, and it wasn’t set up for the sort of game X is. It was ten minutes long. I can’t say I got a true understanding of what it’s like to play Rebirth, but I still managed to explore a little, and discovered that there’s a lot you can do in an open-world in ten minutes. It’s definitely the prettiest trading I’ve ever seen. EGOSOFT’s X Rebirth is expanding the options for space shopping, as they explain in a new video, that also covers how the game handles mining duties. Now split into two parts, basic inventory trading will be handled by speaking to actual (NPC) people and selling what’s in your ship’s pockets. Meanwhile, large-scale trading involves more familiar menus, alongside realistic simulations of docking by massive supply containers.

The facile part of my brain that likes pretty things is currently whacking my internal dopamine button and I’m grinning like a quokka. That button is well worn after my last look at X Rebirth, where I watched X- Rebirth being unveiled through through tear-rimmed eyes. One eye was soaked in tears from the beauty and excitement from what I was seeing, and the other was full of sad tears because I have to wait until November 15th to play it. Those tears are welling up as I look at the new Gamescom screenshots. Oh god, it’s so so pretty.(more…)

Given that we have no “next-gen” on the PC, we miss out on the huge leaps forward that consoles get to have. Admittedly, we trade that excitement in for all manner of upsides, but I do miss feeling overwhelmed by a game. The last time it happened was in Planetside 2, when I was hovering over a tank column that was moving along a road. They were in single-file, jokingly maneuvering towards a very small base. As they crawled, the sun went down and I watched as the headlights clicked on. It was quietly glorious. What does this have to do with this new X-Rebirth trailer? I think you can guess.(more…)

You might recollect that X Rebirth was originally targeted for release a couple of years ago, but it’s only now entering those final stages. Word (via Blue) is that it will appear at E3 under the banner of new publisher Tri Synergy. The announcement of this appearance is accompanied by a hand-wavey explanation of delay from the dev’s bossman Bernd Lehahn, who says “It’s beautiful, it’s big and everything in it is new. But it turns out you don’t simply reinvent space games overnight.”

Anyway, Egosoft are still pushing out the ongoing dev materials, as we saw in this post from Craig in May. And they’re still at it. Astonishing orbital-structure concept video below.(more…)

Hands up who likes complex space sims? Okay. Now hands up who likes complex German space sims? I thought that would thin you out a bit. The complexiest and Germaniest space sim of them all is the X series. It is a series that’s evolved over time into something that actually feels like a place of work, but in an admirable way. Every game I’ve ever started of X has lulled me into watching the universe trundle along. The Kha’ak might be invading, but if you watched me playing it you’d think the point of the game was to stalk low-level transport ships as they go about their everyday business. Which is why the development diary below had me completely hooked: it shows the game’s pathing in action.(more…)

When X Rebirth was announced back in April, there wasn’t a huge amount of information to ponder so it seemed natural to expect something similar to previous games in the series. Turns out that while there will still be a great deal of piloting and trading, some things have indeed changed. The most significant shift is the focus to one ship, The Pride of Albion, which is upgradeable and customisable but cannot be switched out for a different vessel. In a forum post outlining some details about the game, Bernd Lehahn pre-empted the horror of the fanbase: “But before you get upset and complain about the lack of freedom to steer other ships, WAIT”. Are you waiting? Because that command was capitalised. OK, now click.

WURSELEN, GERMANY - Egosoft, a Germany-based game developer since 1990, today announced a new space simulation game titled X Rebirth, the newest game set in the X Universe. The X series is back! No, not Mega Man X or the Game Boy tank game X (that one did see a sequel last year, though), but the open-ended space simulation series that began with X: Beyond the Frontier in 1999. Developer Egosoft has announced a new sequel to the PC series, X Rebirth, to be published by Deep Silver in the fourth quarter of this year.

X Rebirth promises the same kind of Elite-style exploration and trading found in the previous games, but with "a whole new user experience." Trading, combat, and exploration ("with fast travel") are all part of the adventure. If that sounds good, you can see more in the trailer after the break.
