The ol' Castlevania gang has hit some hard times. A bunch of them have taken up smoking, Alucard's even moodier than usual, and Dracula hasn't been the same since he started hanging out with that Satan guy. Developer MercurySteam gives an early look at some of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2's starring characters in the trailer above, with some brief Patrick Stewart narration thrown in as a bonus. Lords of Shadow 2 will launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC platforms in North America on February 25.

Metal Geaaaaaarrrrrrrr?!?!?!?! On PC? This particular collision of worlds – masters of espionage infiltrating the home of spyware, cyborg ninjas running amok in cyberspace – isn’t unheard of, but it’s far from the norm. Then again, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance isn’t your average Metal Gear game. It dispenses with stealth almost entirely, favoring combo and counter-heavy action over tippy-toeing and mullet-rocking. But does the extra helping of over-the-top insanity gel with Metal Gear’s, er, also insane (but in a different way) universe? And how does the long-awaited PC port hold up? Here’s wot I think.

Edit: Steve Key, European Brand Manager for Konami, confirms that this was an accident rather than a DRM issue and the publisher has applied a fix: “MGR PC Update – offline problems *should* now be fixed.” That’s quick work and commendable.

Oh no, say it ain’t so. Another single-player game that boots its owners back into cold, cruel reality the second an Internet connection drops? That would be the saddest of shames if it were the full story. Fortunately, that doesn’t appear to be the case. While it’s true that Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance on Steam falls to freshly sliced pieces when an Internet connection isn’t holding it together, the issue is apparently not intentional DRM. Signs instead point to a Steam API error, though Konami and Platinum have yet to respond in any official capacity.

It's Castlemania in today's end-of-year deals from Xbox, with Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate HD, Symphony of the Night, and Harmony of Despair all on sale, along with a host of Castlevania add-ons.

Harmony of Despair, the 2D platformer that debuted on XBLA back in 2010, is down to $5.09. 1997 classic Symphony of the Night is just $3.39, while the HD port of 3DS entry Mirror of Fate is yours for $7.49.

If you don't fancy sinking your teeth into any of those one-day-only deals, don't forget there's a sizable selection of games staying discounted throughout the week.

We’ve known for a while that Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (because why have one meaningless subtitle when you can have two and invent a new word) would eventually turn its helicopter-bifurcating blade on PC, but that’s all we’ve known. Like a ninja or secret agent from any series other than Metal Gear, Konami’s been pin-drop silent on details. BUT NO MORE. Metal Gear Rising: The Redundancing now has a Steam listing, and it offers a just-close-enough-for-comfort January date.

“Any day now” is the timeframe given for the release of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in a recent Kojima Productions Alert podcast. Responding to concerns that the port had been cancelled, host Sean Eyestone says that’s not the case at all:

“It’s in the final stages right now. You’ll be seeing it pop up on Steam any day now.”

This being the shooty-slicey side of Metal Gear rather than a game of the prowly-prolix variety, I’m hoping for DMC style silliness, with tongues thrust so far inside cheeks that everybody involved has begun to resemble the terrifying TV-dwelling puppet, Pob. I was slightly unnerved when I found a Youtube video containing every cutscene and cinematic in the game. It’s two hours and nineteen minutes long. The opening cinematic is below – fancy another two hours of that sort of thing?

Konami launched the second data pack for its latest soccer simulation game, Pro Evolution Soccer 2014. The data pack offers updated rosters for the game as well as 800 additional faces crafted to look like their real-life athlete counterparts. The free DLC also introduces a team play lobby system, some undefined gameplay and chat tweaks along with an update to PES 2014's online offerings, most notably the addition of an 11 vs. 11 online multiplayer mode.

Lastly, Konami also reintroduced its MyPES feature to PES 2014 through the release of a free companion app, now available on iOS. MyPES allows players to share game results and stats with others, as well as view analysis for "shots, possession, passing, and patterns of play." Players can also use the app to build communities with others, and those without an online-enabled console can scan QR codes to assess their games in the app. The companion app will arrive on Android in the near future.

Dracula's not such a bad guy. Well, he is, but he's got reasons for it, and MercurySteam, the developers of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, want you to know that when you take control of the legendary Prince of Darkness in February 2014.

Dave Cox, producer on the game, says in the dev diary above that their version of Dracula is not the "quintessential evil guy" that people may expect. "I think that following a character you can identify with is really important, so we wanted to have a guy that people really saw, really felt for him, they understood how he got to that place. So I think in many ways, our Dracula is more human than previous incarnations of Dracula."

That statement makes sense given the fact that Dracula was once Gabriel Belmont, hero of the first Lords of Shadow game. In that game's DLC, Gabriel turned himself into a vampire to shield himself from otherworldly powers so he could dispatch an ancient, even worse, evil. Fight fire with fire, as they say. Or in this case, fight fire with vampire powers and a sweet whip. Y'know, whichever.

Konami announced two collector's edition bundles for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 for European players today. The Premium Edition comes with a tomb-like case and includes four figurines, a hardcover art book, a steelbook case and a copy of the game, while the steelbook edition includes the metal case and either two alternate Dracula costumes or a "Relic Rune" pack, depending on where the collector's edition is pre-ordered from. Those looking to pre-order the Premium Edition need to act fast, as it is limited to 30,000 copies across GAME stores in the UK.

Additionally, Konami unveiled a new trailer for Lords of Shadow 2 and new screens, which features Dracula, Carmilla and a whole bunch of shouting. Well, the trailer includes shouting, but not the screens. Though if screenshots could yell, the ones in this gallery would. The game will launch February 25 on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Initially released on the PlayStation 2 in 2004, Gradius V may soon be making an appearance on the PlayStation 3, assuming a new ESRB rating is to be believed.

The rating - "T for Teen" with "Mild Fantasy Violence" - offers no information on when we should expect this PlayStation 3 version of Gradius V, nor any word on what might differentiate it from the original version of the game. That said, it seems likely that Gradius V will be released as a downloadable title, owing to both its hardcore fanbase and the middling sales it produced at retail in 2004.

Whenever it arrives, Gradius V will mark the first English-language entry in the series since 2008's Gradius Rebirth, a WiiWare pseudo-remake of the four Gradius games released for the Japanese MSX home computer system.

Konami issued a new title update for the Xbox 360 version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2014. The patch resolves the game's ongoing issues with online play, in which players were unable to download a data pack required for the game's online modes.

The publisher noted that the full 11-vs-11 online mode is in beta, and "will be available in the coming weeks." Konami plans to launch a new data pack update in November that will feature updated rosters as well as "over 800 player face updates." PES 2014 will receive "further DLC updates," which Konami plans to announce "shortly."

The Lords of Shadow bundle-vania has a release date in Europe, winging its way onto retail shelves over there on November 8. We've reached out to Konami to confirm what tradition suggests - tradition being very important to vampires of course (and publishers) - namely, a November 5 release date for North America, as listed by certain online retailers.

The Collection, coming to Xbox 360 and PS3, features the original Lords of Shadow along with its Reverie and Resurrection DLC packs, Mirror of Fate HD - which is coming to the Xbox Games Store and PlayStation Network on October 31 - and a demo for the upcoming Lords of Shadow 2. The bundle's set UK price is £30, while Amazon and Best Buy have it at $30 currently, GameStop at $40.

The existential limbo that the PC version of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain finds itself is is pretty apt given the ridiculous lore of the series. For what it’s worth, Hideo Kojima has stated that it will appear “sometime”, but that it’s not a priority. Boo-urns to that! His lackadaisical attitude isn’t going to stop me from showing off the new videos of the game, because open-world stealth games are my jam. Below is probably the only footage of Metal Gear in existence that’s not interrupted by seven billion cut-scenes, which I find encouraging. I might be able to play this when it eventually comes to the PC.(more…)
