Disgaea 4 Return will make its Japanese debut on January 30, 2014, according to a Famitsu report translated by Siliconera.

Like the PSP's Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days and the Vita's Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention, Disgaea 4 Return is a portable update to 2011's Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten. It's currently unknown what additions the game will see in its Vita incarnation, though if prior portable adaptations are anything to go by, you can expect new characters, new stages and a host of new items and equipment to complement the basic story elements found in its PlayStation 3-exclusive predecessor.

There is currently no word on when (or if) Disgaea 4 Return might reach Western territories, though the series' popularity in North American and European regions should ensure it receives an English-language localization at the very least.

Portable first-person shooters generally suck. The controls are too limited, the screens too small for fine detail, or the stories aren't more than simple set dressing for an egregious bullet and blood ballet. Killzone: Mercenary does not feel like a portable first-person shooter. Read more...

JRPG-styled RTS Project Phoenix blazed to $1,014,600 when it Kickstarter campaign ended this morning. That money plus the $44,241 donated over Paypal meant the final total was $1,058,841, meeting the stretch goal for a "fully explorable overworld with an upgraded combat transition," along with the rather vague "Fight inside the Kraken."

Project Phoenix raised ten times its funding goal, backers both buying into the concept of a fantasy squad-based RTS layered with JRPG design, and the illustrious names behind it. Creative Intelligence Arts' team includes Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu and artist Kiyoshi Arai, while long-term RPG dev Hiroaki Yura is directing and producing the game.

Project Phoenix is set for Windows PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Vita in mid-2015, while a different iOS version is due too. That's a long old time to wait, but in the meantime fans can still donate to the game via PayPal, although they won't earn backer-exclusive rewards.

Happy Tuesday! This week Sony drops in Puppeteer, NHL 14 and Street Fighter X Tekken on PS3, and Dragon Book Fantasy 2, Sanctum 2, Hunter's Trophy 2: Australia and Carnivores: Dinosaur Hunter HD on PSN. Vita gets a taste of FPS action with Killzone: Mercenary, alongside Dragon Fantasy Book 2.

Pre-orders for Call of Duty: Ghosts are live today, including the Season Pass for $50 and the Digital Hardened Bundle, which includes the Season Pass and an extra map, for $120.

Those are the games you can buy today, but deciding whether you should is another issue altogether. We found Killzone: Mercenary to be a gorgeous handheld shooter that holds up to its console counterparts, and Puppeteer is a near-perfect mix of whimsy, joy and platforming - and you can take those reviews to the bank. Where you can take out money to buy whichever game you want, obviously.

It's no secret that companies affiliated with video games want to extend the reach of their consoles. It's not a bad idea either. Be a gamer's one stop shop for all of their media needs and they'll never leave their console's side. If you didn't stay up for Sony's pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference and don't fancy trekking through two hours or so of sometimes confusing translations, we've got you covered here on Joystiq. Sony's presser did not disappoint when it came to announcements, with some looking very positive, and others... less so. Here are the highlights for you to peruse:
  • Vita TV is the littlest new console in the PlayStation family. It connects to the TV, can play Vita games via a slot and stream PS4 games using remote play. And it's priced at around $100 in Japan. A little big announcement!
  • If you wanted your Vita smaller but not that small and not so screen-less, there's a new Vita model coming to Japan in six oh-so-pretty colors. The 2000-series Vita is 20 percent thinner, 15 percent lighter, and comes in pink. Pink!
  • Almost as surprising as those reveals was the PS4's Japanese launch date: February 22, 2014 - some three months after Europe and North America get their hands on the next-gen system. At least there'll be a fair few launch day games by then.
  • Plenty of games got unveiled for systems, including Soul Sacrifice Delta and Phantasy Star Nova for Vita, and Yakuza Restoration for PS4. Suda51's Grasshopper has a new PS4 game in the works too, although quite what it is beyond a "supreme action" game with a strange title - well, we'll have to wait and see.
  • No Final Fantasy 15 yet to revel in yet, but Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn has a PS4 beta date - the console's launch day no less. Meanwhile, the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD remasters are getting sentimental with a special edition Vita.
All that excitement, and TGS 2013 is still yet to start. We'll be there when it does, though, so look out for our coverage from Tokyo starting next week.

Shin Gundam Musou, the fourth entry in Namco Bandai's Dynasty Warriors: Gundam series, will make its Japanese debut on December 19, Polygon reports from an issue of Famitsu.

While Shin Gundam Musou will retain the series' trademark gameplay involving mobile suits from the Gundam anime mowing down hordes of enemies en masse, the game is said to feature a more realistic aesthetic than Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 3. This allows the development team to add features such as spot damage, which may seem minor, but should increase the game's ambiance and help players differentiate its 100-plus playable mobile suits. Shin Gundam Musou will feature both an Official Mode that borrows storylines from several Gundam anime episodes, as well as an Ultimate Mode, which offers an original plot, the site says.

Past entries in the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam series have been multiplatform, but this latest game is slated for release exclusively on the PlayStation 3 and Vita. So far there's been no word on an American release of Shin Gundam Musou, but if franchise history (and public affection for Gundam) is any indicator we can expect Namco Bandai to reveal an English-language iteration of the game in due time.

PlayStation games streaming is due sometime in 2014 here in North America, but for our friends across the pond, it's a more problematic affair due to the issues surrounding broadband internet availability in Europe. SCEE President and CEO Jim Ryan told Edge during Gamescom that Sony "doesn't yet have a timeline" for rolling out PlayStation cloud services to Europe.

"So the plan is to begin with North America next year and the plan is to provide a streaming service that will allow for PS3 content initially to be streamed to firstly PS4, then PS Vita and then PS3," Ryan said. "And so that will happen in 2014 in North America initially. Now - and I touched upon these issues of broadband in Europe during the presentation - Europe is of course on the roadmap for that service to be deployed at some point in the future, but for reasons outside of our control we don't yet have a timeline for it. So at a show which is now pretty global in its reach but primarily aimed at a European audience, we didn't really want to start talking about the virtues of this great cloud-based service without knowing exactly when it'll come to Europe."

PlayStation cloud services will be powered by Gaikai, which Sony acquired in 2012 for $380 million. Gaikai, which has been around since late 2008, was founded by iconic game developer David Perry, the founder of Shiny Entertainment and creator of such beloved games as Earthworm Jim and MDK.

The demo for Hotline Miami 2 used to open with the Pig Butcher, a beefy, violent man, straddling a terrified woman and dropping his trousers - and then a director called "Cut!" and the actors dispersed. This almost-rape scene isn't in the demo anymore, following negative reactions from early players. One half of developer Dennaton Games, Denis Wedin, tells Rock, Paper, Shotgun that the intent behind that opening isn't to disgust or alienate people, and he's tweaking it for the full game.

"We were really sad that some people were so affected by it, because maybe they had been through something like that of their own," Wedin says. "Maybe they had a terrible experience of their own that was triggered by the game. That was not intentional at all. We didn't add the scene just to be controversial. There is a meaning to these two characters. There's a lot more to them than just this scene."

In our preview of Hotline Miami 2, when this scene was included, we found that intent to horrify and pull back came across, but some players were unable to shake the discomfort of that action - and that's not what Dennaton wants, Wedin says.

Wedin notes that a recent trend in horror movie remakes is to "take the next step up" and make them even more exploitative than the originals, just for controversy's sake, and that's not what Hotline Miami is all about. That opening scene offers a commentary on this Hollywood trend and when the assault is halted, it's a way for Dennaton to show that Hotline Miami 2 is more than blind violence, Wedin says. Dennaton is proud of the story in the first game and it's working to make the sequel even more narrative-driven.
