#devilmaycry I've never as besotted as others are with Devil May Cry's Dante. He looks like Carmen Sandiego-turned-serial-killer and has all the action hero swagger of a male hairdresser. So news certain fans of the series have made death threats to developers Ninja Theory over the character's new appearance are...well, either disconcerting or hilarious. Probably both. More »

For its Devil May Cry game, Ninja Theory somewhat boldly reimagined the revered protagonist, Dante, changing his appearance and his backstory. And now, to assuage the surprisingly irritated Devil May Cry fanbase, Ninja Theory assured Dengeki PlayStation that this version of Dante is from a parallel continuity separate from that of the white-haired Dante-Prime.

That means that the Dante you know and love can continue in his own universe, and potentially in future Devil May Cry games, while Dante of Earth 2 splits off in a different direction. It also means that there's an official Devil May Cry "canon," which somebody has actually put thought into. In fact, there are two now.

#devilmaycry It's been quiet when it's come to updates on the somewhat controversial reboot of Capcom's demon-hunting franchise. But, the Japanese publisher just released a batch on new screens showing the darker-haired Dante in action. Yes, he's throwing down against the usual assortment of creepy demons in the game's locale of Limbo City. But, if you look closely, you'll also see the environment itself changing shape to attack him. Also in evidence are the glowy jacket effect and white hair when he activates his Devil Trigger. Let's just hope the world doesn't do that whole trying-to-attack-you thing during the game's platforming sections. That would be… annoying. One last thing: there's a disturbing lack of guns in these screens. Emo Dante better have some pistols to bang-bang, Capcom. The mix of sword-swinging and gun-shooting is essential for my DmC enjoyment. I needs it. More »

Devil May Cry definitely will be re-released next year, as part of a long-rumored HD collection. Capcom has officially unveiled the Devil May Cry HD Collection for Xbox 360 and PS3, consisting of upgraded versions of DMC 1, 2, and 3. Capcom even went so far as to specify a $39.99 price for the set.

Check out the first screens of the collection below, featuring SD and HD comparison shots, to see how Capcom went in and swapped out the old Dante for the new black-haired version. No, we're totally kidding. We promise. Look at the screens for yourself, and take a breath.

We suspected as much earlier this year, and now the ESRB seems to think the first three Devil May Cry games are headed to Xbox and PS3. All three have been rated by the organization and, incidentally, have received an "M for Mature."

HD collections are all the rage these days, and Capcom is certainly no stranger to rereleasing its older products. And, with the impending Devil May Cry reboot, it only makes sense that the publisher would want to cash in on both series veterans and newcomers alike. We contacted Capcom and were told that the company hasn't "made any announcements." Well we knew that. Sheesh.

Last year, Capcom and Ninja Theory revealed their re-imagining of Devil May Cry (now known as “DmC”) at the 2010 Tokyo Game Show. The response to Dante’s makeover and new look to the universe was split between adoration and outright confusion, with fans questioning the new look and fighting style of protagonist Dante. Heading into gamescom, I received word that Creative Director Tameem Antoniades wanted to discuss DmC’s progress and indulge me in Dante’s new found love for aerial combat. After being reunited with Tameem and Dante, I’m left crying for more.

The new Dante, with his eff-you attitude, lanky young physique and rather Shoreditch haircut, was certainly a bold reinvention. When he was unveiled at TGS last year, developer Ninja Theory was justifiably nervous, worried about fans' reactions to the change. (Because gamers love change, right?) ...

Ninja Theory's take on Devil May Cry really gets off the ground in the Gamescom 2011 trailer. Dante might look like an emaciated Brian Molko in this one, but at least he's still got a knack for juggling.

If you possess fond memories of the original, snowy-haired version of Devil May Cry protagonist Dante, you should bust out your watercolors and really explore those feelings. Capcom's compiling fan-drawn art for the demon-destroying franchise's upcoming 10th anniversary, which the company will then place in "a new, to be announced Capcom game."

If we were betting folks, we'd wager this title would be an HD collection of the first three installments in the Devil May Cry series. If we were really bad at betting, we'd also say those illustrations will be implemented in an all new "Dante's First Coloring Book" mode. Fortunately, we're very good at betting. We have a system, Debbie. A system!
