Coming from a NowGamer interview with Assassin's Creed 4 lead writer Darby McDevitt. Keep in mind that McDevitt was chuckling while saying this.

"There’s no competition! This is the best pirate game ever made! Maybe even the best Assassin’s Creed game ever made. Maybe Wind Waker HD [laughs] Very different tone, though! But I think there hasn’t really been a good pirate game, and we worked very, very hard to make that economic loop very robust.

There are lots of upgrade options, the loop is all tied together with crafting, hunting, harpooning, looting other ships, getting wood, metal and money to upgrade yourself, your ship - you even have a hideout in this game. It’s all tied together very smartly, so that no system feels superfluous, so we hope at the end of the day it’s the best pirate game ever made."

Coming from an IGN interview with Ubisoft executive director Alain Corre...

“There are millions, tens of millions of fans of Nintendo brands. I’m sure you’ve played Mario Kart for hundreds of hours. I did too. There are so many great franchises that are still making people dream. We think these brands will stay with us. After that, it’s up to Nintendo to make sure that the machine can reach as many consumers as possible. We all think that they’ll be able to sell more machines in the future. They have some of the best IP in the world, and some of the best memories for their players. If you’ve played Smash Bros. in the past, you want to play the next one. So these brands have a future, for sure. It’s up to them to work on more communication to get the machine into more hands.”

Ubisoft's FAQ for Rocksmith 2014 notes that the game will support all DLC from the original Rocksmith as well as its on-disc tracks. Speaking to executive producer Nao Higo at Gamescom, we've learned that there will likely be a few tracks that don't transfer. Higo told us that Rocksmith 2014 will support "most" of the original game's songs, though licensing issues may prevent some tracks from making the jump.

"We're still working out the licensing on a couple of stragglers," said Higo. "We want to get to the point where we can say [all the original tracks will transfer], but we don't want to lie to you, so right now we're saying most of them."

Rocksmith 2014 will launch this October on PC, Mac, Xbox 360 and PS3.

One of the big features in Ubisoft's Rocksmith 2014 is Session Mode. In essence, it turns your gaming console or computer into a virtual jam band that listens to and adapts to how you play. It's pretty amazing, and we'll be posting a more detailed preview as soon as we can. In the meantime, here's a little sneak peek: Session Mode can work with electric stringed instruments other than a guitar, even if it wasn't intentionally designed to.

Jokingly, I asked executive producer Nao Higo (pictured right) if I'd be able to plug in my electric ukulele. Imagine my surprise when he told me it would work. The interface on the screen would still reflect the frets and strings of a guitar (which are very different from a ukulele's), but Higo said the virtual band would still listen to my notes and play along appropriately. Creative director Paul Cross (pictured left) added that a member of the dev team has even managed to successfully test Session Mode with an electric violin.

Of course, you can't play the main game with instruments other than a guitar - there go my hopes of becoming an electric sitar virtuoso - but the fact that other instruments work at all is remarkable. Now I just have to find out if I can outfit my virtual jam band with a trumpet and I'll be in business.

Ubisoft has rolled out a new trailer for its upcoming rhythm game and guitar teaching tool Rocksmith 2014 Edition, explaining how many of Rocksmith's core mechanics have been significantly overhauled for the series' follow-up release.

During gameplay, note and chord prompts are now clearly labeled, with fret numbers listed underneath upcoming strums. Rocksmith 2014 Edition also informs the player of proper finger positioning for every note, and an on-screen guide demonstrates proper technique for transitioning between chords.

Rocksmith's dynamic approach to difficulty has also been overhauled. Players can now set a difficulty for an entire song or individual sections, overriding the game's default "level-up" approach to song mastery. In addition, the new "Learn a Song" mode suggests tutorials, chord lessons, and practice sessions for players struggling with specific song segments.

Master Mode has also seen a number of improvements since the original Rocksmith, where it simply eliminated all notation for the entire length of a song. Master Mode now gradually introduces itself dynamically throughout individual song sections, removing note prompts and rewarding large point bonuses for full mastery.

Rocksmith 2014 Edition will launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC platforms on October 22.

This isn't the Flashback I want to remember. This isn't the protagonist, Conrad B. Hart, this is some smarmy Nathan Drake wannabe doppelganger with a pocket full of bad one-liners. This is a version of Conrad whose drive to rip the lid off a conspiracy threatening the whole planet is diminished by his overly bro-tastic attitude and complete lack of tact in all things.

This update of Flashback takes all of the intrigue and gravitas of an epic sci-fi story and bafflingly bloats it with terrible plot points and half-heartedly tacked-on mechanics that feel out of place and majorly useless.

It’s Gamescom, one of the many firework-enshrouded peaks of game convention season. You know what that means: glitz and glamour galore. No, the Hollywood-style antics don’t quite reach the fever pitch of, say, an E3, but there’s still plenty of triple-A chest-thumping to go around. And so, Ubisoft has rolled out another movie deal, this time for not-even-out-yet open-world hackomancy thing Watch Dogs. Technically, the game’s title now has an underscore in it, but I refuse to write it that way because it looks hideous. Anyway, like all videogame movies (except ones based on franchises no one cares about), it’ll probably never come out. But let’s listen to a bunch of executive types be super optimistic anyway!

I spent a couple of hours playing FUEL with a friend last week. We hopped online, spawned some quad-bikes, and just drove across whatever part of America we were supposed to be in. It had nice trees. So I’m really interested in The Crew, Ubisoft’s open-world driving game set in a Frankenstein’s monster of America, particularly the ‘social driving’ features. I know ‘social’ isn’t a cool buzzword, but if all it means is I can see what a friend’s doing on a map of America and plonk my car down next to theirs, then I’m perfectly happy to do so. I hope it means I can plonk my car down in front, though. Mwahahaha. Mwahahahahaaa! MWHAHAHAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Hah!

An encouraging video of The Crew has just skidded into first place in my heart, and it is below.(more…)

Hey guys! Couldn’t make it to Gamescom? No worries, we’ve got you covered. Here’s the trailer that was recently shown at Sony’s conference. It introduces a rather intriguing group.

Let’s have a look…

We already knew that even though Aiden was kind of a lone wolf, he wasn’t always acting alone. He had some help. But in this latest piece, we’re realizing that he might be facing more resistance than he had initially planned.

DedSec, an unorthodox group of “hacktivists” very active in Watch_Dogs’ Chicago, doesn’t seem to approve of Aiden’s actions — even though in a way he’s helping them uncover the many flaws of ctOS. Therefore, they seem committed to exposing him and denouncing his actions to the population. And much like Aiden, DedSec appears to have plenty of resources, making him even more vulnerable.

So what’s Aiden’s real connection with them? Are they friend or foe? On top of dealing with his own problems and the occasional police chase, will he have to watch his back for DedSec members? I, for one, have trouble believing him when he says he’s not in any trouble.

Also, today we’re getting a glimpse of some amazing, Sony-exclusive content. The pre-order bonus includes the sleek and deadly DedSec white hacker suit, and 4 exclusive missions that’ll give you an extra 60 minutes of play, plus a hacking boost perk. All that will only be available on PS3 and PS4, so pre-order now.

Make sure you follow us on Facebook and Twitter to join in on the conversation.

Trailersoft, a division of Ubisoft that was funded when Yves Guillemot’s cat stood on his keyboard and added an extra zero to the trailer team’s budget, has been very busy lately. The pressure of releasing the hourly reminders that they have Splinter Cell and Assassin Creed games coming out has tired the poor folk out. They’ve gone a little bit avant garde with this trailer for the newly unveiled Panzer General Online. The game is a free-to-play turn-based wargame for browser generals. You will stare at your hexagons and make tactical decisions about the Battle of Omaha Beach, the Battle of Monte Cassino, and more. The trailer shows that off with a plastic army man fighting off a tank.(more…)

In the least surprising news of the year, it looks like The Divi sorry: definitely in some way involved Tom Clancy’s The Division will be making the jump to PC when it’s released towards the end of next year. Back in June, Ubisoft were asking players to sign a petition to bring the title our way, Jim rather rightly implying that it would have no effect and the decision had already been made. Now in a video from Massive’s Fredrik Rundqvist, Executive Producer on the game, the almost inevitable has been theatrically announced. See below.

It was while stuck behind enemy lines, carefully studying the movements of armored guards that I realized just how deeply I'd fallen for Splinter Cell Blacklist. Completing most of the game as an unseen and non-lethal ghost, I left the franchise's protagonist motionless for minutes as I examined the patterns of three aggressive adversaries. This is the Splinter Cell of days past, a game with as much focus thrown at patient stealth progression as at Hollywood bombast.

Back from the cold, Splinter Cell hero and seemingly ageless covert agent Sam Fisher returns to help thwart American enemies. For Sam's latest jaunt through coordinated terror strikes, Ubisoft Toronto recalls the stealth gameplay that made the series famous, while offering more action-focused players tools to survive an onslaught. Whether it's a player's desire to pass through each sequence completely unseen or leave nary a pulse beating in their wake, Splinter Cell Blacklist allows them to craft their perfect gameplay style.

Watch Dogs seems like just the game to mark the burgeoning brutal reality of governments around the world using technology as a boot with which to stamp on human faces, forever. It’s a game about a fairly cool trenchcoat maverick-not-playing-by-the-rules guy – I mean I say “fairly cool”, I would never want to look like him, or dress like that, but okay he’s the kind of individualist freedom fighter a nerd like me can get behind – who uses modern things like phones and internets to fight back. He use guns too. They’re like computers that can make holes in stuff. They’ll never go out of fashion for fighting back, right guys?

Right! Anyway, a new wad of glossy commercial trailering reveals a lot more about that hacking stuff as you can see below. Gosh, it looks fancy.(more…)

Ubisoft has announced a demo for Rayman Legends will be available on Xbox 360 and PS3 starting August 20. The demo will consist of three levels and a sample of Invasion mode - tougher, remixed versions of established maps.

The three playable levels include Teensies in Trouble and Toad Story, along with its Invasion mode variant, plus musical level Castle Rock. The demo also grants access to the Gallery of Heroes where you can mess about with character costumes.

Rayman Legends, which takes place 100 years after the events of Rayman Origins, launches on September 3 for the Wii U, PS Vita, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. In our video preview last month, we highlighted the new stealth levels reminiscent of the Sly Cooper series and Mark of the Ninja.

Hey guys!

Last time, I was pumped to share the Honored Trailer for Watch_Dogs, and now I’m here with some new gameplay footage that’ll give you the rundown on how to operate in the world of the game. As you may know, Watch_Dogs’ interpretation of Chicago is a web of technological connections, all overseen and managed by ctOS, a piece of centralized software designed to watch over the city and keep it running smoothly. ctOS controls everything from emergency response to the network of indoor and outdoor security cameras dotting the urban landscape. In the hands of a skilled hacker and strategist like Aiden Pearce, ctOS means nearly unlimited power. And in your hands, it means incredibly fun and engaging open-world gameplay.

So check out the Watch_Dogs Hacking featurette.

Whether you’re looking for a tactical advantage in stealth and strategy or just a bit of gossip mongering through strangers’ private texts and scandalous emails, hacking into ctOS gives you total access, and it’s an amazing feeling to play with all that power.

In the next episode, you’ll be learning all about Chicago, both as a city under constant surveillance and as a living, breathing entity in Watch_Dogs. It’s going to be pretty great, so keep an eye out for it right here.

For now, you can pre-order Watch_Dogs on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 to be among the first to explore its open world. To get your copy, visit our official website.

And you can keep up with all the latest news and updates on the Watch_Dogs Facebook page, or follow us on Twitter or Instagram.

Until next time!

"We don't talk about it in terms of size, that would be a little bit unfair - there is a lot of ocean in the Caribbean. But it is the biggest game we've ever made. The story and narrative itself will last 15-20 hours, but we're hoping that people got lost in the Caribbean world, in the toybox we've created. It will take - [to sail] across the whole game world - maybe half an hour."

Rocksmith 2014's lesson mode will explain the causes for a player's mistakes and offer advice on how to fix them, an update to Ubisoft's blog announced this week.

While the original Rocksmith told players when they were making mistakes, Rocksmith 2014 will explain exactly what's going wrong. If a player is struggling with a concept, the game will "pull you out of the interactive portion of the lesson and give you further instructions - this time with additional camera angles and tips."

Ubisoft's update states that Rocksmith 2014 will triple the amount of lessons offered in the original game, covering everything from tuning a guitar to advanced playing techniques like tapping notes.

Rocksmith 2014 will strap up for the 360, PS3 and PC this October. The game's soundtrack will include Jake White, Bob Dylan, Alice In Chains and more artists to be revealed at a later date. Pre-orders will include The Smashing Pumpkins' Cherub Rock as a bonus track.
