The official teaser site for Kirby's Return to Dreamland is now open for business. Like most teaser sites, there's not much going on here. Let's hope it fills up with content soon. The game's release is just a few weeks away!

My greatest fear about the multiplayer in this was that players 2, 3, and 4 would be stuck as unchangeable characters while only player 1 got to bask in the Copying glory.

Now I'm happy.

I'm also glad that I finally got to see Waddle Dee do something.

You should see the new Kirby game for the DS. It has the salesman guy from the crappy anime.

OK, let's face it. Kirby is a weirdo. In an industry where video game heroes run the gamut from cute to cool, and from E-rated to Mature-only, Nintendo's little pink puffball has somehow always managed to be one of the most unique. He's everywhere. He does everything. Genre labels can't hold him back and his own history can't define him...

The first player has to be Kirby, but everyone can pick from other known Kirbyverse characters.

With few embarrassing exceptions like Kirby's Air Ride, the pink puff ball has always been a solo experience. That's merely an option in Kirby's Return to Dreamland, the second Kirby game being released this year, and a game that may as well be called New Super Kirby Bros. Wii.

I had no idea Kirby's Return to Dreamland was even announced at E3. I'm paid to know facts like this and didn't realize Nintendo had revealed two Kirby games until catching up on RSS feeds after the show. But Nintendo showed both to me recently in San Francisco (read my impressions of Kirby Mass Attack over here), and you can imagine my surprise when another Nintendo employee picked up a controller--and a blue Kirby appeared. And then a yellow one. And another color I can't remember.

Four Kirby dudes at once! Madness. Playing as Kirby isn't your only option either, so long as you're the second, third or fourth player. Someone has to play as Kirby, but anyone who joins in the game afterwards has the option of playing as several other characters, such as Meta Knight. If you're not Kirby, however, you lose access to Kirby's unique ability to acquire powers through cannibalism. I doubt Nintendo would approve of such terminology, but you tell me what else Kirby's actually up to.

Other playable characters include King Dedede and Waddle Dee, each with their own attacks. I can't figure why you'd want to play anyone other than Kirby, though; messing with the powers has been the general appeal behind the Kirby series forever. To be fair, this defining bit wasn't even part of the original Kirby game, Kirby's Dream Land, released on the Game Boy in 1992.

By collecting a particular power-up, Kirby's powers are exponentially increased.

The four-player mania was a love-it-or-hate-it feature from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Three people was the sweet spot for me, preventing the chaos from spilling into the realm of frustration, but I totally understood why most people had zero interest whatsoever. Platformers are about strict timing--it's a very personal affair. Kirby is not. There is platforming involved in playing this or any other Kirby game, but it's not front and center. Again, it's more about really messing cute dudes up with powers.

And there are hella powers up in Kirby's Return to Dreamland, powers way more powerful and screen-encompassing than anything else Kirby's had access to before. There's even one that allowed Kirby to create his own personal wave and surf across the damn screen. Surf.

All told, while I'm thankful for what appears to be two new quality Kirby games, I can't help but be a little remorseful Kirby's Epic Yarn appears to have been a one-off when it comes to Kirby's console appearances. Kirby's lacked a strong visual identity in 3D, an issue Kirby's Epic Yarn solved by running in the opposite direction and embracing something different. It's not to say Kirby's Return to Dreamland looks bad, but "well, it looks like another Kirby game" is hardly a compliment, either.

Fortunately, "it looks like another Kirby game" also means it's probably gonna be a pretty good game.

There's no doubt that the Wii's long and successful life is coming to a close as Nintendo makes way for its next generation of home consoles, Wii U. Still, Kirby's Return to Dreamland counts as one of the few remaining titles worth noting on the system...

Nintendo's announcement of its PAX offerings includes a surprise bit of news. Kirby Wii has officially had its name changed to Kirby's Return to Dream Land, and it's been given a release date of October 24. Hey, another Wii game to look forward to -- how about that!

Nintendo will be showing off Kirby's latest Wii outing at PAX, along with Kirby: Mass Attack, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Fortune Street, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7 and Kid Icarus: Uprising.

Nintendo's PAX lounge sounds pretty amazing even without the games: the two-floor lounge in the North Galleria will offer giant Pokedex 3D cards, a Dragon Quest-themed "monster friend mash-up" photo booth, and a fully Kirby-themed area with Kirby beanbags and pink cotton candy.

After waking up just in time to briefly appear at Nintendo's E3 2011 press conference, Kirby will apparently be heading back to Dreamland in his forthcoming Wii appearance. In speaking with a Nintendo rep at this week's San Diego Comic Con, Siliconera heard that the none-too-subtly-named Kirby Wii will actually be named "Kirby Returns to Dreamland" when it arrives this fall.

Nintendo has yet to confirm the title, but we expect we'll hear official word when the company decides to make a big release date announcement. And given how much we liked the game when we played it back at E3, here's hoping that announcement comes soon.

#misunderestimated One month ago, in the Nintendo booth at E3, I asked Nintendo people to tell me which Nintendo game I shouldn't overlook. Kirby Wii, they told me. But I was never a Kirby fan. I never played the pink puffball's original enemy-inhaling games. I was ready to ignore them. More »

From Joystiq’s article based on their E3 experience: As with Epic Yarn and other recent Kirby series entries, Kirby Wii’s platforming and creature battles are light affairs, demanding little more than a bit of very basic puzzle solving or well-timed actions in the few levels I played. Kirby jumps and sucks in air, which can then [...]

Kirby, Nintendo's pink, spherical vacuum monster, is the star of a new Wii title that is playable on the floor of E3. Kirby Wii -- which is probably a working title -- features 3D, polygonal graphics in stark contrast to the stylish Kirby's Epic Yarn, which was released on Wii in the fall of 2010. ...
