What, you think just because SyFy and Trion Worlds' cross-media project Defiance is set in the future it's immune from rotting, shambling, flesh-hungry beasts? The game plague reaches the show in two weeks, unless the players can stop it! Well, that's probably not true. I'm sure the June 17 episode of Defiance has already been filmed and edited, and the next two weeks' worth of special in-game content in which the players attempt to find a cure before it reaches TV continuity is just fluff, but it's nice to think we're making a difference. On June 17, the show's Doc Yewll will send a distress call to a colleague in the game's San Francisco area, so players had best work through the quest chain launching next week, or they'll feel prett stupid when the episode references things they didn't do.

This is a weekly column from freelancer Rowan Kaiser, which focuses on "Western" role-playing games: their stories, their histories, their mechanics, their insanity, and their inanity. I had my World of Warcraft year. In 2007, when 'The Burning Crusade' came out, the game clicked with me and it became almost the only thing I played for months on end, to the point where I started raiding with an up-and-coming guild. I know many other people who've had that year, with WoW or some other massively multiplayer game, before they lost interest, burnt out, or continued out of habit more than joy. In the last year or so, I've tried several massively-multiplayer role-playing games - Star Wars: The Old Republic, Guild Wars 2, The Secret World - and couldn't find that magic again. I could admire the design, but quickly lost interest in playing them. I was starting to think I'd never really like a massively multiplayer game again - and then, on a whim, I decided to check out Defiance.

Defiance is the main game I've been playing for two weeks now, and this may continue. It's not that it's less flawed than the other MMORPGs, but instead that the parts of the game that it focuses on hold much more appeal to me. To put it another way: Most games within this genre are focused on combat, and Defiance's combat is significantly more fun for me than its competitors'.

At this rate, Trion Worlds might soon be forced to change its name to Trion Islands, or maybe Trion Small Yet Charming Spanish Getaway Vacation Villa. After the Rift team got hit by a major round of layoffs late last year, Defiance‘s band of trigger finger scratchers has taken a possibly even bigger hit. While the exact number is unconfirmed, many reports place the total at around 100, which is a worrisomely not-small portion of the entire company. For its part, Trion has confirmed the unfortunate turn of events, but it’s been illusive otherwise. The company’s statement is after the break, in addition to a few further details.

I've been skeptical about the extent that SyFy's Defiance television show would be interacting with Trion Worlds' Defiance MMO, but this is pretty cool. This is Tiio Horn as Rynn, a member of the Irathient race that found herself in hot water in the TV series over the past two episodes. She'll be spending a few weeks in the game to cool off. In the show, Rynn had an issue with summoning Hellbugs, one of the world of Defiance's signature bad things. In this week's episode, Rynn was being transported to a prison following her bug problems, but certain events led to her earning her freedom. By the end of the episode she was riding off into the sunset, directly into the San Francisco of the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 MMO. In an in-game event called "Hellbug Season", players will meet up with Rynn, whose talent for insect-charming is being abused for devious purposes. Players will work with the fiery character to fix a bad situation and get her ready to head back to the show. And now I am playing again. As generally unpleasant as I find the show, this event is an incredibly nifty way to get players of the game involved, and I really want to see how the story unfolds. Well-played, Trion Worlds and SyFy.

SyFy and Trion World's crossmedia experiment seems to be a hit in both intereactive and non-interactive form, with more than a million active accounts in than a million registered accounts for the MMO and nearly four million viewers tuning in for the television series premier. Today Syfy has announced that it's renewed the TV series for another 13 episodes starting in 2014, despite it being pretty damn mediocre so far. What? I'm not a fan, and it's sad, because I should be. An ensemble cast, aliens on Earth, a video game tie-in — this is a property made with me in mind, and I'm just not getting it. It's not the game. It's a solid-if-repetitive shooter with an interesting storyline and some engaging driving segments. Trion has five paid and non-paid expansions due out this year alone, adding new playable races and gameplay types to the mix. Left alone, it might blossom into something really worthwhile. But it's not alone. It's tied into a television series set in a location half a continent away from the game's setting. It features characters similar to those in the television series, but the actual stars appear only briefly. There are going to be regular content updates that fold show content lightly into the batter, but it doesn't look like the two will ever completely be in line. But Syfy and Trion will keep trying, and that's a pity, because the more I watch the show, the less I like the game. The launch of the show brought the MMO logs to a screeching halt. It's the aliens in the powder make-up and horrid blonde wigs. It's the generic gruff hero with a heart of gold Grant Bowler. It's Julie Benz, whom I love, but really isn't convincing me there's a reality in which anyone would elector her mayor of a cheese sandwich, let alone a wild frontier alien town. It's the fuzzy aliens that look like Sid and Marty Kroft creations. Defiance the game has promise, but every time I try and play I get the taste of the television series in my mouth. It tastes like powdered wigs and prosthetic glue. It's the fake of the live-action disrupting my virtual reality, and it's going to keep happening for at least another year. Woo!

Now that the MMO-slash-TV show Defiance has been launched, says executive producer Nathan Richardsson, things are about to really get good, in the form of five DLC releases later this year. He admits that fan response to the game has it pegged as "about as deep as a bag of chips but great fun," but adds that he'd "like to get to the two-bag of chip depth category or at least, add some salsas for various textures."

Most of those spices will come in the form of DLC, and Richardsson has outlined what the game's first addon, tentatively titled "Enter the Castithan," will look like. There will be three elements to it: Those who buy the downloadable content for $10 will get access to the Castithan playable race, along with a new outfit and vehicle, and a new story mission line and game mode. There will also be free content, including new weapons, a new PvP map called Military Academy, and some other game improvements. And then there will be new items in the store, including weapon mods, more vehicle versions, and the ability to change your character's customizations.

Richardsson says all future add-ons will have these paid, free, and store components, and the team's goal is to keep the updates and content flowing and focused on what players want. The first DLC release is expected to hit the game after a patch later on this month.

Trion Worlds' persistent-word shooter Defiance has surpassed a million registered users in its first month, the developer announced today.

Players have collectively murdered over 500,000,000 hellbugs to date in Defiance, while the number of slaughtered heavenbugs is currently unknown. Trion also boasts one million triggered instances in the press release past the break.

Defiance is a trans-media project from Trion Worlds and the SyFy network - Trion Worlds launched the video game side of Defiance in early April, while SyFy's television series is currently ongoing. A "Most Wanted" contest was just announced, where players who average the most Ark Salvage per hour are eligible to win a spot on an upcoming episode of the Defiance TV show. The contest ends on May 12.

Defiance describes itself as an “online open-world shooter”, but it can’t pull the wool over my eyes – I know it’s really an MMO. Look at it, pretending to be something new and different even while thousands of players sprint around chasing experience points and killing infinite, infinitely respawning monsters. You can’t fool me, Defiance! I defy your description of yourself. I DEFY IT.

Defiance also a tie-in to a new sci-fi serial on the Syphilis channel, but as the trailers suggest it’s a sort of grey pantomime I currently have no intention of watching it. Perhaps an hour* with the game, which as far as I can ascertain is designed to be standalone as well as tie-in, would change my mind?(more…)

SyFy TV tie-in Defiance is running an in-game contest that'll score the winner a guest spot on the show! Well, a guest shot as a picture of them rendered by the show's artists. All you have to do is play better than everyone else. TV and MMO cross-media experiments are hard.

Defiance launches on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on April 2, but prior to that, developer Trion plans to run one last beta test, including - for the first time - Xbox 360 and PS3. The beta runs the weekend of March 22, starting at 8am PT (11am ET) and concluding on March 24 at 9pm PT (12am ET, March 25).

The final beta opens up the Mt. Tam and Madera regions to players, with co-op battles on Angel Island and the Cronkhite Bunker available. Competitive multiplayer may also be sampled on the Freight Yard and Observatory maps.

Trion is stripping the NDA for this last beta test, so feel free to upload gameplay videos to YouTube, you crazy game streamer you. Expect invites to go out next week, though Trion is guaranteeing beta keys to all who pre-order Defiance from here on out.

Sy-Fy-Fo-Fum, I smell the walnut-infused mocchiatocinospresso of a marketing man. I still can’t quite believe that the Sci-Fi Channel is called the Syfy Channel now and I’m also bewildered by the fact that Defiance, an open-world shooter that is linked with a new TV series, actually looks quite good. It should be awful, clearly, because these sort of transmedia efforts have the dual stench of desperation and cynicism hanging off them like a Cary Grant clinging to a president’s face. The new trailer for Defiance is primarily interesting because the human characters are wielding some nasty biological weaponry, which I’d expected to be in the claws of their monstrous enemies. Take a look.

Defiance, an upcoming massive third person online shooter (set to come to PS3 on April 2nd) has thousands of different weapons that will titillate shooter players no matter their play style. Whether you prefer to snipe from a hilltop or, like myself, run full speed whilst rapidly firing a modified shotgun in the faces of your foes, we have a weapon that will work for you. Moreover, Defiance has a system that allows you not only to collect new weapons as loot as you traverse the San Francisco Bay area, but has a system that allows you to salvage them such that you can choose particular pieces to trick out a different weapon. Gone are the days when you find an amazing scope on a less powerful gun: the salvage matrix now has your back.

Today we released a trailer detailing some of our more inventive weapon selections. We highlight the Infector (not only does damage but grows boils on your enemies that erupt with monsters that can then wreak havoc on other enemies), the Bio Magnetic Gun (does damage to bad guys, heals the shield of good guys), the Rocket Launcher (come on, who doesn’t love those), and the Detonator (think Rocket Launcher on speed with the ability to bog down enemies so those you don’t finish off are vulnerable for the one-two punch.) These weapons are just the tip of the iceberg (and, with the power of the salvage matrix, the configurations you see in the video are just one way you can mod the guns.)

Check out the video – then let us know which weapon you liked the best (or what you’d like to see more of.) We play Defiance live on our dev servers every Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon at www.twitch.tv/trionworlds and will try out the configurations you are hankering for a closer look at.

Trion has posted details on a season pass for Defiance, its MMO-meets-a-TV-show project in conjunction with SyFy. The season pass will cost players $39.99 and enable access to the game's first five DLC packs, which will include a new playable alien species, along with lots of new weapons, vehicles, missions, and other rewards. Plus, pass buyers get two bonus items: a digital Hellbug combat cap, and an extra Lock Box (which is a sealed container in the game for a chance at another item).

The $39.99 is in addition to the game's initial purchase price ($59.99, or $99.99 for the deluxe edition). Defiance won't have a subscription fee, and this price is 20 percent off what the DLC will cost in total.

The Defiance game will be launched on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on April 2, while the TV show will start on April 15.

Frankly, I would’ve been utterly dumbfounded if Trion Worlds defied all reason by saddling Defiance with a subscription fee, but TV changes people. Maybe being front-and-center on Syfy would’ve convinced some exec that Defiance is different. It can have subscription fees and its own three-story trailer-yacht and a special pen on set for its pet orangutan, Mr Screams-A-Lot. And also a rapidly developing coke habit that repeatedly gets chalked up to accidental over-consumption of  ”cough syrup.” But I digress. Happily, Trion’s not fallen into that glitz-and-glamour-laden trap, so the crab-alien-blasting MMO’s going for more of a Guild-Wars-style model. Live-action celebratory trailer for the game – not the show – after the break. Hopefully they’ll do an in-game trailer of the show next. Synergy!

Defiance, the upcoming massive online third person shooter in development at Trion Worlds, will be available on PlayStation 3 Tuesday, April 2nd. In a mere matter of weeks, you and your friends will brave the wilds of the San Francisco Bay Area, hunting down precious arktech, taking down mutants and alien monsters, and battling with and against hundreds of other players.

Not only will Defiance be available worldwide on April 2nd for gamers everywhere, our sister show on Syfy will launch the same month. Set in St. Louis, the series will chronicle the lives of humans and aliens in St. Louis. Since the show and game take place at the same time, both show and game will overlap the weeks pass. Defiance premieres Monday, April 15th at 9:00pm / 8:00pm Central.

Earth isn’t a safe place anymore. After the terraforming and wars that followed the arrival of the alien Votans, it became a dangerous place, barely recognizable as the Earth we once knew. As an Ark Hunter, you’ll have a special set of skills to give you a head start in this new place, but success won’t be easy. We’ve just released a live action trailer for the game that provides a glimpse of what it’s like to play as an Ark Hunter in Defiance, as well as some of the challenges you’ll be up against. Watch the trailer at the top of this post.

MULTIMEDIA CROSSOVER ALERT. It’s like Skylanders this, but with more alien death and bionic irises. Trion’s Defiance is currently best-known as a sci-fi MMO, but it’s also going to be a TV show on the atrociously named Syfy channel. I believe this is a glimpse at what that will look like: a Starship Troopersy affair (visually – I doubt the satire will be in there, somehow) deliberately made to look very similar to the game.(more…)
