How many bundles are there? So many bundles. And here’s another from the folks at Indie Royale. This time it’s what they’re calling a Lightning bundle, perhaps because it falls outside their normal release schedule. These types of bundle will, I believe, focus on one series or developer and for the first it’s Serious Sam. So, what do you get?

There’s a demo out for insane side-scrolling Serious Sam spin-off Serious Sam: Double D. You can get it on Steam. That will allow you to create your own opinion on the game. If, however, you remain unsure, or were born without vital critical faculties, then you can still read our Wot I Think, which sums up this gun-stacking absurdity rather nicely.

Serious Sam: Double D is the side-scrolling indie spinoff to the irreverent FPS series. Sort of like the inverse of a ‘90s shareware sidescroller evolving into an irreverent FPS series, with continued 2D spinoffs. There are scattered pop culture references, gouts of blood and a wisecracking, macho hero. Observe as I try to give you my thoughts without referring to Duke Nukem even once.

As Moe Szyslak so ably demonstrated in Season nine, Episode five of The Simpsons, it only takes a few minor adjustments to turn one gun into five. It seems developer Mommy's Best Games combined that notion with the blood and guts insanity of Serious Sam to produce Double D, a side-scrolling shooter where you can stack shotguns on lasers to blow up dinosaurs and flying monkeys...

Indie developers are the starving artists of the video-game world, often brilliant and innovative, but also misunderstood, underfunded and more prone to writing free-form poetry on their LiveJournals. We at Joystiq believe no one deserves to starve, and many indie developers are entitled to a fridge full of tasty, fulfilling media coverage, right here. This week, as part of a three-part series, we're featuring the creators of the Serious Sam indie series. Today is Nathan Fouts of Mommy's Best Games, talking no-joke gun-stacking in Serious Sam: Double D.

What's the name of your Serious Sam indie offering, and how does it play?

Serious Sam Double D launches Sam into the second dimension and grants him actually-over-the-top abilities, like the Gun Stacker, which is a suite of robotic arms that allow him to carry all of his guns at once [Ed. note: Or carry all of his chainsaws, a feature added thanks to commenter greyson97 on this Joystiq article, because that's how indie development rolls]. Sam fights Mental's hordes in new temporal dimensions, encountering classic enemies like the evil Kleer skeleton and the headless Kamikaze, but also new, deadly oddities like the jet-packing Chimputee, and the bristling Etanoh Salvo Spider. Sam must disable teleportation beacons placed in each time period before his hordes completely invade and wipe out civilization.

Not too long ago, John brought you words and pictures in an attempt to describe the madness of Serious Sam: Double D. Now, Mommy’s Best Games have sent an ambassador forth to describe things in his own words. And he has some footage for us all. It’s trailer time and I’d highly recommend having some tranquilisers on hand for when this one’s done.

Devolver Digital has announced that Serious Sam Double D, the first in the Serious Sam Indie Series, will arrive on PC next week. The title will be available via "digital PC game services like Steam and Get Games" for $8 starting August 30.

Lest you've forgotten Double D, it's the latest from Mommy's Best Games and, more importantly, let's players stack guns on top of other guns, thus creating an even more powerful gun. See the feature explained in the handy video above..

They say that dreams don't come true, and they're right, as our utter lack of bacon-generating jetpacks can attest. But the one place that rule doesn't apply is in the Joystiq comments section. Want proof? Check out the above comment, from our post about Serious Sam: Double D's brilliant Gun Stacker.

Inspired by this comment, the hard-working staff of Mommy's Best Games went and ... you guessed it: PUT 4 CHAINSAWS ON IT. Check out the gallery for the proof and get ready to believe in miracles.

There’s a lovely promotional initiative taking place for Serious Sam 3. Quintin brought news of it back in March. A few indie developers, whose games Devolver and Croteam enjoy, have been asked to make a game in their own style set in the Serious Sam universe. I’ve had a chance to see one of them running – Serious Sam Double D from Mommy’s Best Games. Vuvuzelators, chimp amputees and gun stacking within.
