Capcom held a panel this morning to talk about the recently-announced Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and the company shared a few tidbits about how the game is changing for the new version. It took a total of nine minutes before Capcom lead producer Ryota Niitsuma acknowledged the character leaks, joking that "there's a lot of cool stuff in this game, and I'm sure you know all about it."

But while the leaked characters weren't talked about at the panel, Niitsuma did mention a few of the gameplay tweaks. The X-factor move in the game can now be used either on the ground or in the air, and he said that many players would "have to revamp your whole fighting strategy" on that one.

Capcom also revealed that each character, including the older ones, will have two new costumes in the game, and they shared some of the special pre-order bonus costumes for the game. Above, you can see the Best Buy bonuses (including "Graceland Modok" -- "nobody here said Elvis," the panelists joked), and the rest are after the break.

Beyond the trickle of post-launch downloadable content for Marvel vs Capcom 3, Capcom offered little in way of support for the long-awaited Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 fighter. And according to producer Ryota Niitsuma, that was out of his team's hands. "After the release of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 there were plans to release DLC. But, as you know, less than a month after the game was released we had the earthquake and tsunami in Japan," he claimed in a San Diego Comic Con interview.

According to Niitsuma, the disastrous events that occurred in Japan not long after the release of MvC3 "threw off our whole development schedule." Eventually, a decision was made to release that content on a disc, along with tweaks to the gameplay, a new spectator mode, and other new playable content. Niitsuma characterized the content as "about half and half" between the originally planned DLC and newly developed content for UMvC3.

Speaking to the subsequent leak of the entire roster for the upcoming Marvel vs Capcom title, Niitsuma reluctantly accepted the situation. "It's a shame it got out, but that list, those names -- those are the characters we are adding to the game. But this is only a list of characters," he noted. "I think for the fans of our fighting games, that's where the real fun is -- seeing those characters move and act." As for when we'll see that? "Closer to the release date," he said. Unless it leaks out earlier, of course.

Remember that slow, meticulous character reveal we predicted for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3? Uh ... never mind. It appears that artwork of all twelve of the new characters has been revealed. The images were pulled by Joystiq from Capcom's own servers (example). Unless this is an elaborate hoax on Capcom's part, the characters would seem to be legit. The new roster includes:

Capcom
  • Strider
  • Firebrand
  • Vergil
  • Frank West
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Nemesis
Marvel:
  • Ghost Rider
  • Dr Strange
  • Nova
  • Rocket Raccoon
  • Hawkeye
  • Iron Fist
We know what you're thinking, because we're wondering the same thing: How is Capcom going to work these guys into Marvel vs. Capcom 3's intricate story? See images of each new character in the gallery below. You can also find trailers for the officially announced characters after the break.

If you're one of those sad, depressing old people who likes to kick back and enjoy a long, labored schedule of character reveals stretched out over however many months a PR team has to in order to maximize coverage for a game that's essentially a reboot of a game that came out less than six months ago, you can just go read something else right about now, grandpa. Why? Because your elderly, liver-spotted face is about to get blasted with so much Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 new character info at once, it's going to knock you off your walker and onto your wrinkly behind, inadvertently removing your catheter and crushing your colostomy bag in the process. So seriously, please go read something else, because that's going to be really gross.

Thanks to the most minimal amount of sleuthing ever required to dig up unannounced information for a video game ever, Joystiq managed to find character art assets for all 12 of the new fighters coming to the updated version of MvC3 by, of all things, just looking on Capcom's press site. It was all just right there, ripe for the taking, leading one to believe that this could all be an elaborate ruse, designed to ensnare any sneaky bloggers who might be hunting for a scoop. Or, someone just put some image files live too early. Either seems a perfectly reasonable explanation.

Yup, this is totally happening.

The twelve new characters you'll (allegedly...okay, probably) be playing in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are...

Capcom

  • Strider
  • Firebrand
  • Vergil
  • Frank West
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Nemesis

Marvel:

  • Ghost Rider
  • Dr. Strange
  • Nova
  • Rocket Raccoon
  • Hawkeye
  • Iron Fist

I can't wait to watch Phoenix Wright "Objection!" the living hell out of Rocket Raccoon. Believe me, I never thought I'd get to type that sentence in my lifetime, either.

It's probably worth reiterating that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is retail-only, much as Super Street Fighter IV was. According to a statement from Capcom, "We think everything offered in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is worthy of a full retail release. With updates oft he game system, spectator mode, etc. it would be a quite a lot for a DLC update." So, to be clear: If you want these 12 characters and everything else available in the update, you're gonna have to buy a disc.

Here's a gallery of images for all the characters, if you're into that kind of thing.

We realize it's kind of rare for Capcom to release an updated version of one of its fighting games, but try to bear with us. The publisher has announced Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, which adds a number of improvements to the original. First and foremost, of course, is a load of new characters, twelve in all.

The press release mentions Capcom's Strider and Firebrand from Ghosts & Goblins (this guy). Entering the Marvel camp are Ghost Rider and Hawkeye. We're sure that the others will be slowly and methodically revealed over the next few months.

Also included will be eight new stages, a spectator mode and unnamed balance tweaks. The game is set to be released this November at a "mid range price" on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
