Cast your mind back, if you can, to the year 2012. Our young eyes (clear of cataracts) watched the skies eagerly for the next great space game, unaware that Star Citizen, Elite: Dangerous, and so many more were soon to be announced. In that distant year, a more innocent Adam played space shooter SOL: Exodus and, finding it fun for a bit though wonky, wondered where the developers might take pew-pew spaceships next. Turns out, er, the answer is back to SOL.

What’s described as the “core development team” is now revamping and expanding SOL: Exodus, planning to release it as a new game under the sure-to-be-a-bit-confusing name Exodus of Sol.

Space combat invigorater SOL: Exodus is heading to European boxed retail this summer and all digital distribution systems shortly. Developer Seamless struck a deal with publisher Iceberg Interactive to the bring the game to physical shelves in the UK , Ireland, Scandinavia, Benelux and other territories beginning June 22.

"SOL has definitely been a labor of love for us, and we can't wait to hear from fans and players from around the world." Seamless Studio Director Dan Magaha said, "As a small indie developer working in the town where Wing Commander was born, it's been an enormous honor to build our homage to the classic space games we loved when we were young, and we hope that passion comes through in the quality of our work."

SOL: Exodus launched on Steam earlier this year and, for whatever hiccups it may have as an indie project (many smoothed since launch), it's still totally worth it for $10.

SOL: Exodus, the $10 downloadable title that honorably brings the space combat sim into this generation, now has a demo available for test pilots. The demo covers the full prologue mission, which includes the basic tutorial and sets the stage for the "escape the solar system before it blows up" campaign.

Seamless Entertainment is also working on another update for the game, which will be available in the coming weeks. Version 1.12 adds mission checkpoints, difficulty levels, cockpit view, collision damage and "virtual joystick control."

So, go ahead and try out the demo, and consider supporting this genre that desperately screams in the vacuum of space to return.

- Decreased level load times
- Various optimizations
- If locking a missile on a target, and missile lock is then lost (out of view, changed target), user may release the missile fire button without firing a missile. This is only if they release the button before a new lock is acquired.
- Docking penalty re-added
- Added a visibility cone to the radar for easier readability for the time being.
- Fixes for the afterburner sound sometimes playing constantly after use.
- Virtual Mouse Joystick mode should now respect deadzone and sensitivity settings, though more work needs done still.
- MAG cannon projectile speed increase
- HADES Missile slight speed / health increase
- Reduced chances lower difficulty enemy fighters will shoot missiles out of the air.
- Increased speed of Gunships
- Increased potency and accuracy of Gunship turrets
- Mission 3 has gotten a complete revamp. No more transports to save and, in general, is much more action-orientated than before.
- Mission 5 Gunship exit points moved further out from their spawn point allowing players enough time to kill them (this was needed due to their speed increase)

- Extended joystick support implemented. Saitek X52 and Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X are now supported
- On control settings screen, Gamepad renamed Xbox/PS Gamepad and will only show up if appropriate controller is connected.
- Joystick renamed Joystick/Gamepad as most modern gamepads register as joysticks and will only show up if appropriate controller is connected.
- Only 6 default mappings put in for joysticks, down from 12. Y-axis now inverted by default. This change will not affect previously saved settings changes.
- Fixed issue on Mission 7 where the user would not always get points for destroying the CoD Temple.
- Fixed performance issues on M7.
- Shortened M1 and M7 a bit due to pacing issues.
- Shortened Prologue a bit due to pacing issues. Heroic action requirements also reduced (25 fighters -> 15)
- Further improved Atlas turret effectiveness.
- Elite AI behaviors further improved.

I live in the very same solar system that SOL: Exodus is set in so I was quite eager to defend it from unpleasant space morons, but what awaited me? A carnival of cartwheeling ships silhouetted by a dying sun? The cunning destruction of mighty frigates, too large to be penetrated by conventional weapons? Those are certainly things that happened but mostly I shot hundreds of little fighter crafts in the backside.

Patch 1.9 is a large update that includes a major bugfix that resolves the crash issues some users were reporting, as well as a large number of balance adjustments and improvements based on customer feedback.

• User files now saved in three separate parts, Profile.bin, VideoAudioSettings.bin, and ControlSettings.bin
• Fix for user settings sometimes becoming broken after editing items on the control settings screen
• Much improved user targeting when firing at a target's lead indicator
• Incoming missiles may now be immediately targeted by the 'Cycle Closest Enemy' hotkey
• Incoming missiles have their targeting triangle rapidly blink now
• 'Virtual Mouse Joystick' control mode implemented in a beta phase. Use the console command 'ToggleVirtualMouseJoystick' to have the mouse simulate an analog joystick for ship motion. This can be compared to mouse controls in games like Freelancer. Note that this feature is currently in the beta phase.
• When the current target is lost and a new target is automatically targeted, the closest target is chosen, regardless of priority
• When using the 'Target in Reticule' hotkey, if there is no ship in the reticule, the closest enemy to the user is selected, regardless of priority
• Capital ships are no longer a prioritized target for cycling
• Tab key is now mappable
• Deadzone and Sensitivity settings no longer affect joystick throttle controls
• Fixed issue with CoD Elite fighters not firing in the correct direction when they perform a maneuver to fire in reverse
• Fixed issue with CoD Elite fighters not having their lead indicator out in front all the time
• Some text clarification on the Control Settings screen
• Various visual fixes (both the Saturn and Titan levels received visual upgrades)
• AI improved
• Health of base fighters and elites improved
• Score penalty for docking has been eliminated
• ADD drilling time has been increased
• Prologue/Tutorial has been overhauled

The look of hope and excitement I saw in the face of the developers of Sol: Exodus was infectious at PAX Prime 2011. Like so many indie games, the demo wasn't impersonal or delivered by a well-coached PR person, but the head of the studio, someone with a deep personal investment in the project. I li...

Notes:
- Fixed an issue with possible profile corruption and added measures to repair existing broken profiles while attempting to preserve gameplay related progress and upgrades
- Fixed an issue where campaign progress could be incremented accidently at times when completing a mission through the mission select screens
- Targeting triangles for non-targeted, non-critical ships again made to be less prominent in the UI
- Implemented a smart target cycle system, that prioritizes more dangerous or objective centric ships first

Gosh, there seem to be a lot of space game activity emerging of late. I’ve just been pointed to forthcoming indie space-shooter SOL: Exodus, which is looking very shiny indeed. It’s going to be a single-player space combat game, with a storyline. In it you will “pilot a multi-purpose tactical fighter ship complete with a variety of special abilities to battle enemy forces across the most recognizable landmarks in our Solar System.” There are a couple of game videos of it here, and it’s looking pretty promising. We’ll have more on this closer to launch, when we get a chance to talk to the Seamless team about the game.

Now that we've got adventure games fairly well resuscitated (yes, we're taking all the credit) our next target is the space shooter. And no, we don't mean guys from different planets shooting at each other (that's already roughly 74 percent of the market). We want to get behind the throttle of our own ship, fly in any direction we please and, perhaps most importantly, make much larger capital ships explode by shooting exposed vents.

SOL: Exodus, a downloadable space shooter coming to PC and (maybe) consoles from Seamless Entertainment, is doing its part to help us realize the dream. We got a look during PAX, and were hugely relieved to finally find a space sim that's not mired in the past.

For starters, there's the "slide" mechanic, which lets you shoot in any direction and immediately redirect your ship without having to fight momentum or an unwieldy turning radius. Purists may complain, but it made the ship feel responsive in a way that most modern gamers would likely expect.

SOL: Exodus also features a bit more interactivity than we're used to from the genre, such as the ability to hack into enemy defenses to help turn the tide of a seemingly hopeless fight. Here's hoping that Seamless' baby can be a similar turning point in our struggle to bring back the space opera.

Do you lament the lack of games like X-Wing or Freespace in modern games? Do you wish that you could pilot a starship in epic space battles a la the Battlestar: Galactica television remake? Developer Seamless Entertainment hopes so, because its new game aims to take advantage of that very market. SOL: Exodus takes us back into space, puts us in the cockpit, and is the first step in what the team hopes will be the return of a genre...
