Combining fast-paced first-person shooting with a Diablo-like loot system and the deep character customization of a role-playing game, Gearbox's Borderlands was a surprisingly sophisticated modernization of Doom-era kill-everything-you-see mayhem, and one of 2009's most memorable titles. It got even...

Start getting excited, because Rock, Paper, Shotgun will soon be releasing its trailer to celebrate the announcement of a release date for the reveal date for its next trailer! But in the meantime, why not enjoy the trailer released to announce the launch date for Borderlands 2? Which is the 18th September in the US, then after a long swim the 21st Sept in the UK/EU. Which is aaaaaages away.

Borderlands 2 will be out in North America on September 18, and internationally on September 21. That date might be enough incentive for you to pre-order -- it's so far away, and you might forget! -- but 2K offered initial incentive, in the form of the "Premiere Club."

Premiere Club members will get a unique "Gearbox Gun Pack," a "Golden Key" item to unlock something in the Golden Sanctuary Loot Chest, and the "Vault Hunter's Relic." These are all in-game items, by the way. 2K didn't really build a "Golden Sanctuary" and send out keys to it.

After an exhaustive process of ... asking people to send in headshots and come to auditions, Gearbox has found its real-world Lilith analog for Borderlands 2 promotional events. Witness Australian model Yasemin Arslan's transformation into the Borderlands character, including creepy contact lenses, in the above video.

Next up: auditions for a real-life Claptrap.

We saw the new Gunzerker class in the Borderlands 2 teaser trailer released way back in August, but Gearbox has shared a little more information about just how the gun-wielding brute will work. The class is a dual-wielder of weapons, but can only bring out two guns for a limited amount of time, which means the player will have to make tough decisions about which guns to wield and when. Combine an electric machine gun with a flaming shotgun to drop shields and do flame damage? Sure, why not!

There are three skill trees in the class: One has skills like "Yippe Ki Yay," which extend your berzerk mode when you make a kill. The second tree is more of a tank tree, with abilities that boost your heath and even a taunt to drive enemies to attack you (instead of weaker teammates). Finally, there's a tree called "Gun Lust" that seems targeted more towards solo play, with vampiric attacks available, and special skills like one that grants more damage to the last bullet in a clip, or another that provides extra shots with no ammo cost.

Gearbox has also confirmed that the Siren class will return to the game, but says it won't necessarily be a phasewalker like the last time out. Instead, the gameplay will be "very, very different and very, very new," according to lead writer Anthony Burch. That sounds ... ominous, no? Maybe she'll take a tip from the Dragonborn and have some singing attacks.

Gearbox's Borderlands was all about shooting things and taking their stuff. It had a story, but it didn't amount to much. Gearbox says it's giving story and character development a lot more attention, but it's also doing a lot to the gameplay. Like the first game, you'll choose to play as one of four character classes. So far we know of two, which includes the Gunzerker...

That sounds flippant, but for a loot-driven game like the Borderlands sequel it’s actually pretty important. It is, as concept designer Scott Kester explains in the first episode of a new video series about the forthcoming game (below), about making a loot-chomping shooter less repetitive by making the content more interesting, and more distinct. No new game footage in this video, sadly, so you’ll just have to make do with Mr Kester explaining the “it’s the same but better concept” over several minutes.(more…)

Borderlands 2 developer Gearbox is seeking a real-life Lilith. The person hired will appear in the game as the "live action version of the character," and there are additional opportunities to participate in promotional events and trade shows. We pity the actress in advance for the latter.

This isn't a contest, it's a contract job opportunity. The actress/model will be paid $1,000 per day of shooting, with a guaranteed minimum of one day of work.

Interested applicants can either submit a headshot photo (of their face, not of one committed in Borderlands) by email or attend one of the cattle ca..., er, open casting calls being held in Dallas, TX, during the first two weeks of December.

Michael John Mamaril was a huge Borderlands fan, until he died of cancer last month at the age of 22. His friend Carlo, also a Borderlands fan, asked Gearbox Software to have the game's snarky robot, Claptrap, eulogize Mamaril. Gearbox did, and it has also promised to include Mamaril as an NPC in Borderlands 2. You can hear the heartfelt eulogy from Claptrap and Gearbox on Soundcloud.

Gearbox has established itself as a pivotal figure in the Borderlands community, outside of simply creating the game. In April, Gearbox had Claptrap help a man propose to his girlfriend, and now we've seen the deeper side of its indulgence. Cheers, Gearbox, Carlo and, most of all, Michael John Mamaril.

Gearbox is all ears (and other limbs, internal organs and appendages -- they're not freaks) for the contents of the Borderlands 2 collector's edition, asking for creative fan suggestions to fill out its packaging. Post your collector's edition dreams in the official forum, or right here, as Gearbox has promised to read our own thread as well.

Gearbox also has a short survey for Borderlands players to fill out, asking questions about which aspects of the game were most important and why, ending with an open-ended suggestion box. For those low on free-form comment juices, feel free to copy this one with the appropriate words inserted:

"Borderlands was a(n) (adjective) game with (adjective) art style and (adjective) gameplay mechanics. (Don't) change anything in that regard for Borderlands 2. The storyline could be (more/less) cohesive in the sequel and the AI could (not) be improved. Also, more lasers."

Borderlands 2 is running on a platform of trimmed fat and effective economics -- it will be better, Gearbox says, it will be meaner and it will fix all of the problems of its predecessor. We've all heard promises like this one before, but if the leaked gameplay video above is anything to go by, Borderlands 2 has our vote.

The video shows 14 minutes of Borderlands 2, featuring new weapons such as a disposable, regenerative, Wal-Mart-inspired rifle, a new character in Maya the Siren, an old character in Roland, and new enemies, such as the torturer Nomad, who uses a midget as a meat-shield. Check out the stunning new art style and gameplay mechanics of Borderlands 2 above, and don't forget to vote in 2012 pre-order before it drops after April 2012!

Borderlands 2 will allow you to take you couch co-op companion online. Gearbox's Steve Gibson told Joystiq at the Gamescom reveal of the game that those playing split-screen will be able to go online and connect with two other players.

"The only situation you can not do is split-screen plus split-screen because you need a host," Gibson said. "And a split-screen guy uses a lot of CPU, so he can not be the host."

Another improvement for the sequel concerns the user interface, which has been reworked for split-screen. Now you can easily manage the upgrades menu without all that awkward scrolling around.
