Borderlands 2's first downloadable expansion, Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty, will be available at some point today for Xbox 360, PC and PS3. The expansion adds the sandy Pirate Bay area, the town of Oasis, new enemies and, of course, more loot.

Captain Scarlett is the first of four downloadable expansions for the hit game, which sold 1.4 million copies in the US during its debut month, and is priced at $9.99 (800 Microsoft Points) There's also the Borderlands 2 Season Pass, which includes all four pieces of DLC as they become available for $29.99. Now, vault hunters, will you answer the call of booty?

Sure, most of you have already downloaded Gaige the Mechromancer, the fifth playable character in Borderlands 2, but she was supposed to launch tomorrow. All that play time you already clocked with her? We hope you cherished it, because it was special - Early Bird special.

Hey guys, Jonathan from Gearbox here! I was walking around the office the other day and wouldn’t you know it — Sir Hammerlock came up to me and handed me a letter and asked if I could share it with you. Here’s what he had to say:

Dear Vault Hunters,

I’m well aware of your never-ending thirst for things to shoot and or loot, and I’m positively thrilled to announce some news nestled firmly in that avenue. Not one, but TWO pieces of downloadable content (or “DLC,” for the acronym-fond amongst you) for Borderlands 2 will soon be available for your procurement.

Have you ever dreamt about romancing a mech? If so, then you have been greatly misinformed about the new character class DLC. You shall receive the pleasure of playing as Gaige the Mechromancer (she’s a mechro-mancer, rather than a mech-romancer, you see – the importance of syllabic emphases can seldom be understated), a spectacularly brilliant prodigy of a girl who uses her robotic friend to slash, punch, and otherwise eviscerate the many fearsome foes of Pandora. She can also manipulate electricity by invoking the power of science. I also hear she’s a bit of an anarchist, but in a rather fun, mowing-down-bad-guys-while-humming-rock-music sort of way.

Last, but certainly not least, is “Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty,” the first campaign DLC for Borderlands 2. You can enjoy the splendor of skimming over the dried-out desert dunes of Pandora on a sand skiff, all the while shooting sand pirates with new guns and searching for treasure. As for Captain Scarlett, she’s the most pleasurably forthright backstabber I’ve ever met – an honest brigand, a truth-telling liar. Splendid woman.

So, there you have it – a brand-new Vault Hunter with which to wreak havoc, and an equally new campaign to wreak aforementioned havoc in. Look sharp, adventurers – there’s never been a better time to visit the Borderlands!

Tally-ho and all that,
Sir Hammerlock

An addendum (the nitty-gritty details):

If you pre-ordered Borderlands 2 at a participating retailer, you can play as Gaige for free as part of the Premiere Club. If not, you can acquire her for the paltry sum of $10. Included with Mechromancer, you also get cool Gearbox guns, Vault Hunter’s Relic and a golden key that unlocks a rare item in the mysterious Sanctuary Loot Chest.

if you’re a Borderlands 2 Season Pass holder then you’ve already acquired “Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty,” and simply need to download it the moment it comes out tomorrow. Otherwise it too can be obtained for $10.

The UK game retail charts are about as relevant to PC gaming – and indeed gaming as a whole – as Mars Bars are to the red planet, knickers are to a fish or kindness is to the Murdoch dynasty. Nonethless, I feel compelled to mention this week’s, purely because they suggest that even the most mainstream field of games isn’t as resistent to new ideas and thoughtfulness as the moneymen who think Call of Honor is the only profitable game in town.

While the deathless Fédération Internationale de Foot-to-ball Association retained the number one spot, Dishonored snuck straight in to 2 and XCOM to 7. Hurrah for new things doing well!(more…)

Even though Borderlands 2 bested sales of the first game by 234%, it wasn't able to sell more copies than Madden NFL 13 in September. According to Macquarie Capital analyst Ben Schachter, 1.4 million physical copies of Borderlands 2 were sold in the US at retail since its launch - we've reached out to the NPD for exact September sales.

That figure doesn't take into account copies of Borderlands 2 sold digitally, via Steam on PC or as part of the Day 1 initiative on the PlayStation Network. GI.biz says Schachter forecasted a total of three million in sales during the last three months of this year, accounting for the aforementioned digital distribution channels.

Borderlands 2 recently released its new character class - the Mechromancer - and will get the first of four DLC content packages on October 16. 'Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty' will be available across all platforms for $9.99 and free to owners of the Borderlands 2 content Season Pass.

Sand skiffs cut through the sun baked land of Oasis.

If you've been itching for some Borderlands 2 downloadable content that doesn't involve starting over with an entirely new character class, Gearbox has some good news for you. As of next week, you'll be able to get your hands on the first story content DLC for Borderlands 2, in the form of Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty. Yes, that's a double entendre.

The Captain Scarlett DLC takes place in the sun scorched sandscape of Oasis, an area infested with bandits and pirates, including the titular (stop giggling you infantile creep) Captain Scarlett.

The DLC will go for $9.99, except for those who have already purchased the $29.99 DLC season pass. They'll obviously get it for free. It's expected to launch across all platforms on October 16.

I've actually had the chance to play some of Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty, but hilariously, I am embargoed from saying anything about it until next week. So I can't tell you if it's a totally decent addition to the game or not, because that would just be wrong. Look for more thoughts on it when said embargo lifts.

You can imagine my disappointment when I heard about this. Not the unparalleled mega-classic of science fiction drama Captain Scarlet, featuring the indestructible captain of the near future, but Captain Scarlett (pictured above), featuring some kind of hook-handed lady buccaneer of the wastes. Oh well, it might still be an entertaining expansion, what with it being hi-tech happenings in the Borderlands 2 world and all. The Verge reports that Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate’s Booty “includes a new sand skiff vehicle”, and presumably a lot of guns, quests, and other B’lands DLC type stuff. It will appear next week for the attractive sum of $10.

Needless to say, I’ve posted the first part an episode of the one true Captain Scarlet below.(more…)

The first downloadable expansion for Borderlands 2 is titled 'Captain Scarlett and her Pirate's Booty', according to the game's updated trophy list. PS3Trophies noticed three extra Captain Scarlett trophies added to the game via yesterday's title update.

The three trophies are for completing the "X Marks the Spot" mission, discovering all named locations in Oasis and the surrounding Pirate's Booty areas, and completing all Pirate's Booty side missions. This, along with information drawn from the game's PC source files by Gearbox forum users, suggests the DLC introduces new areas.

We've reached out to Gearbox for further information on the DLC, and we'll update you as soon as we know more. Until then, this was the voice of the Mysterons, and as ever we know that you can hear us.

There's nothing sweeter than the relationship between a girl and her floating death robot.

Do you like mechs? Do you like romance? Well, too bad on the second part, because that's not really what a mechromancer does. So what does a mechromancer do? You'll find out later today when the newest class for Borderlands 2 drops across all platforms.

For $10 (800 MS Points), anyone will be able to download the new, fifth class once the DLC hits the in-game shop. Anyone who grabbed one of the Premier Club editions of the game will receive the new class for free.

So what is the mechromancer, exactly? The mechromancer is a girl, Gaige, who controls a mechanized buddy named Deathtrap. Deathtrap has a variety of intriguing skills and abilities, many of which you can suss out by checking out Gaige's skill tree, which Gearbox handily posted here. I actually had the chance to spend a little time messing around with Gaige last week, and found her to be one of my better-liked classes. She reminds me a bit of the commando class, albeit with a turret that actively seeks out and punches/blasts enemies, as opposed to remaining stationary. She's definitely a neat addition to the game.

The mechromancer is, of course, just the first piece of DLC headed to Borderlands 2. As of now, she's the only class addition announced for the game, but Gearbox reps I spoke to didn't entirely rule out the possibility of more classes down the road, though nothing is planned currently.

If you like games about shooting and collecting and shooting and collecting and shooting and collecting and being yelled at all the while, you’ll be glad to hear that the first major DLC for Borderlands 2 has been released a week earlier than planned. Gaige The Mechromancer is a new playable class/character for the game, and the one who offers the vaguely notorious newbie player-orientated skill tree. Though that is in addition to abilities that offers precision, brutality, robo-biffing and all that good stuff. You can play with the tech tree to see the various builds here, in fact. Also, she gets a pet robot who has the head of Shockwave from the Transformers.(more…)
