I am a creature of mercy. No, no, ignore any apparent evidence to the contrary – I do not seek to take life, even virtual life, unless absolutely necessary. So it was that, when my time finally came to play a level of Arkane’s upcoming Dishonored, I was resolute in my intention to spill not even a drop of blood, innocent or otherwise. But would such pacifism even be possible in a game nominally billed as an assassination sim? I stole into the shadows to find out.(more…)

So I got my hands on Dishonored – Arkane’s first-person game of magical stealth and supernatural assassination – and had some time to play through the level shown at E3, Kaldwin’s Bridge.

It’s quite good.

Actually, that’s unfair. It’s better than quite good. And it’s making me yearn.

In between arguments about the current value of whale oil and somehow gaining superpowers, Dishonored's main character finds time to carefully sneak into brothels for murderous acts. Or he simply guns everyone down. Hey, it's your choice.

Good news for PC players looking forward to Dishonored, as the multiplatform game will have a separate interface on PC. "Our background is very PC for sure," Arkane Studios designer Raphaël Colantonio told PC Gamer. While Dishonored will be gracing consoles, he assured fans that, "yes, the PC has its own different interface."

We don't yet know exactly how the interface will differ from its console counterparts, but its mere existence should be a relief to PC players.

The marketing team at Bethesda Softworks cooked up a pre-order plan to go along with Dishonored that's perfectly fitting for the game's title, it seems. Like so many pre-order schemes these days, the Dishonored bonuses are varied across several retailers, making it impossible to purchase the game without a sense that you're missing something (well, unless you buy four different copies of the game, all with pre-order bonuses attached).

Should you choose to participate in this arcane chicanery, might we suggest not snagging Target's bonus? While GameStop, Best Buy, Amazon, and Walmart each get their own "downloadable upgrade pack" for one of the game's playable characters, Target simply gets a Dishonored "smart phone decal." Not exactly what we'd call the best convincer. Also, the Best Buy one comes with a "Whale Oil USB Lamp," so, ya know, kinda the obvious choice.

Take a look at all the options just below the break.

Good morning! And it is a good morning, because the first of the great wave of E3 trailers are starting to arrive. Let’s kick off the day with the one trailer we probably all want to take a look at – Arkane’s tale of a supernatural assassin in an alternative world. Yes, the Dishonored trailer is quite the thing, with whales, plague, children, and lots and lots of slow-motion evisceration.

Oh my. You’re going to want to watch this one.(more…)

The first gameplay trailer for the upcoming Arkane Studios-developed title Dishonored has been revealed, courtesy of GTTV.

It's hard to describe all of the condensed action found within the footage, but it's easy to parse one fact: if this is what they've been planning over the years, we can finally forgive Arkane for not following up its criminally underrated Arx Fatalis.

Dishonored hits the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on October 9.

Bethesda's steampunk-ish assassin action game, Dishonored, will make its way to North American and European retailers on October 9 and 12, respectively.

We'll find out more about Dishonored - this fall's other assassin game and best summed up as BioShock + Assassin's Creed + Dickens - and get some hands-on time with it at E3 in a few weeks.

We may not be getting BioShock: Infinite this October, but stepping in to fill the gap is what – in my brain at least – occupies a similar space: Dishonored. It’s set to be released on the 12th October this year. Unless you’re in America, when it’s the 9th. Or Australia, where it’s the 11th. Really?

Wait, hang on, I made a rule about this yesterday. No. It’s bound not to be coming out in October, because this is the first announced release date. Expect Dishonored some time in 2017.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is real, and it’s spectacular. We caught up with SuperBot‘s Lead Combat Designer Paul Edwards in this extra-special episode of PlayStation Blogcast to discuss the game’s genesis and overall fighting philosophy. Then we move into the shadowy world of Dishonored to learn how this stealth-action revenge tale fuses familiar elements from BioShock, Assassin’s Creed, and Deus Ex in a chat with co-directors Harvey Smith and Raf Colantonio of Arkane Studios.

Finally, we discuss the new The Walking Dead episodic game series with a visit from Telltale Games Designer Jake Rodkin. In our chat, we learn how the game expands on the grim world of the Eisner-award-winning comic series and how your decisions and actions will define the arc of the story for months to come. I’ll note that I finished the first episode last night and adored it; make of that what you will.
