#metroid There was, once upon a time, a serious plan to bring a Metroid movie to the silver screen. With John Woo directing. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but various things conspired to sink the project, chief among them Nintendo itself. More »

#megaman There's a bit of Pinocchio in Mega Man's story, what with the kindly father figure creating a "son" out of artificial materials. And, yeah, there's some melancholy in there, too. Melancholy that digital artist Madec Brice captures in his beautiful portrait of the Blue Bomber. More »

#metroid Kotaku reader Dan Cattell recently built himself some Metroid cosplay. Well, some more Metroid cosplay. We've featured him previously with his Samus piece, but I figured this 11-foot Ridley deserved its own time in the spotlight. More »

#metroid The internet is drowning in Samus fan art, but this beautiful image, complete with subtle redesign, might just be my new favourite. It's like a cross between a Nintendo game, a rock poster and early 80s anime. In other words, the perfect picture. More »

#pokemon We've already had a look at artist Jed Henry's great reinterpretations of video game characters as they would've appeared during the age of samurai. But the shots above ramp things up even more. I can't decide if the Starfox or Pokemon art is my favorite. See more of Henry's Ukiyo-e styled images here. More »

#metroid Think back to when you first played Metroid to the end for the first time. Your mind was blown when you found out Samus Aran was a woman, right? But you couldn't do anything like, say, hit on her. More »

#metroid I'm hesitant to call this papercraft, since that's a word we normally associate with little things that sit on a desk. Instead, I'm just going to call this 6'10″ model of Metroid's Samus Aran a masterpiece. More »

#fakeporn World of Warcraft, Left 4 Dead, Tomb Raider… Avid Kotaku readers (and/or consumers of adult entertainment) know that actual porn parody movies exist for these video game franchises. But what if your tastes run to Ezio, Samus or, um, Rayman? These characters don't have films but one digital artist has made up fake DVDs covers for these characters' would-be sexploits. More »

Nintendo's actually doing a pretty good job with these 3DS demos! Today on the eShop, you'll be able to get a sample of the upcoming puzzle adventure Crush3D. You know, in case our preview wasn't quite vividly descriptive enough to paint an accurate picture in your brain.

If you missed the Ambassador Program, you can now buy the NES classic Metroid on 3DS as well.

#metroid I don't think this counts as a mod, since all the guy's done is stick a Wii Remote inside a giant replica of Samus Aran's arm cannon from Metroid, but still...it means you can play Metroid Prime with a giant replica of an arm cannon. More »

2011 was a year of numerous anniversaries for Nintendo. But in the shadow of some of gaming's bigger names - most notably The Legend of Zelda, for which the Big N really rolled out the red carpet - one series in particular got left out of the festivities. This year marks the 25th anniversary of when Metroid's Samus Aran first entered our lives - though you wouldn't know it given the silence on Nintendo's end...

#metroid How tall would Samus Aran be in real life? The seller on this eBay item claims that it's life-size so, if this crafty piece of artwork's to be believed, she'd be about 5'6" (165 cm, for you metric-heads). The sculpture's made from defunct Nintendo games from the Japanese publisher's legacy systems, like the Game Boy, Nintendo Entertainment System and Nintendo 64. Originally commissioned for used games retailer JJGames, it now needs a new home. Surely some retro enthusiast out there can give Samus a loving home? More »

#genesis We started to see limited edition consoles pop up regularly in the late 1990s. They're of course commonplace now. In the early 90s and before, though, they weren't really around, which is where Ricepuppet's console customisation service comes in handy. More »

Two days before the arrival of the 3DS Ambassador Program games, Nintendo of Japan has revealed the full list of ten NES (Famicom) games being released there. This could be the exact same list of games we get in North America and Europe -- all we know is that the initial five games were consistent worldwide.

The five games revealed today include Metroid, Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, Yoshi's Egg, Mario Open Golf, and Wrecking Crew. In addition to those, Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong Jr., and Ice Climber will be available for free, to anyone who qualified for the Ambassador Program by taking their 3DS to the eShop on time. And, of course, these will be followed by ten GBA games.

[Update: Nintendo of America tweeted the rest of the NES games coming to North America ... and it's exactly the same games!]
