Tekken 3D Prime Edition is an enjoyable fighter that unfortunately suffers from a lack of modes and some poorly executed ideas. Had there been more to do then this could have probably been the fighter to beat on the handheld. Sadly though what you’re left with is a great technical showpiece for the Nintendo 3DS and not much more. Shame.

It's the equivalent of buying a new Mercedes without the heated massage seats, bass-pumping stereo and turbo-charged acceleration. The ride's still awesome, but you can't shake the feeling that something's missing.

Tekken 3D Prime Edition is a good if unspectacular Tekken transition. Its 41 characters and 60fps frame rate is unmatched on 3DS, and while it arguably lacks a truly meaty challenge for a single player it's enjoyable enough that you won't really mind.

The following comes from Tekken series producer, Katsuhiro Harada...

“In Tekken 3D: Prime Edition, the game supports 60 frames per second during wireless play, but stereoscopic 3D display is not supported.”


That's right, no 3D in multiplayer. Looks like the dev team REALLY wanted to make sure they kept that 60fps!

- Harada’s relatives had a coffee shop, and as a kid, he’d place the Space Invaders game
- Harada’s parents forbid him from playing video games
- Harada: “No. (laughs) They wouldn’t buy me a Nintendo Entertainment System, so I had to play at a friend’s house or sneak into a game arcade to play. So as reaction to that, when it came time to get a job I decided, “I’m going into the game industry no matter what!” My parents cried over it.”
- He was a psychology major in liberal arts, which isn’t video game related
- He happened to get his first job offer from Namco
- Harada started off in sales rather than as a developer
- Harada: “Harada Right. I actually never even thought, “I want to make games.” My thinking was filled with imaginary thoughts like, “How much fun would it be and how much freedom would I have if I could make my living playing games?” (laughs) I thought about what would be the best way to get a big number of people involved in playing games, and I decided to work in sales and do video game events.”
- This was a reaction to his parents not sharing his idea of how much fun video games can be

- Special Survival: see how long you can survive on one life bar, beat your opponent faster to get a little health back, beat opponent without getting hit and you'll start the next fight in Rage mode
- start off with just a five battle mode
- clear this to unlock ten and twenty battle modes
- 10th and 20th battles are special matches where you can only do damage to your enemies through aerial combo attacks

- clear the mode to get CP
- Versus Battle: fight local or online

- cards have character images and illustrations from past Tekken games through Tekken Tag Tournament 2
- cards also feature scenes from the Blood Vengeance movie
- create a set of three cards for StreetPass sharing
- Cards that you receive through StreetPass can be unlocked by exchanging your CP
- over 700 Tekken Cards waiting to be collected
- Profile: Edit your profile, view your records, change character color and access a character viewer
- Options: change controls, difficulty, time limit, sound and other areas

#tekken Think for a moment about fighting games and portable gaming systems. Compared to genres like first-person shooter or action/adventure, fighting games make a great fit for handheld play because they don't need a second analog stick.
