#kimswift From reading Valve's employee handbook, you might get the impression that the Half-Life creator is freewheeling, chaotic, and structure-free. More »

Quantum Conundrum's Airtight Games is used to handling inter-dimensional scenarios, but now it's going for the most egregious combination yet, mixing virtual reality with real reality. Quantum Conundrum and iam8bit are teaming up for a mysterious and seemingly slightly dangerous production this May, asking "hardcore fans" to sign up to be "transported to another dimension, all in the name of science. Seriously, we're not messing around."

Potential participants are asked to be at least 18 years old and be available May 11 and 12 in the Los Angeles area. Fifty people will be chosen, based on the form requirements of "Why should you win?" and, apparently, how hearty your bone structure appears in a photo you send in. Any die-hard Quantum Conundrum or iam8bit fans, or those with superior cheekbones, can fill out the entry form right here.

At GDC last week, I grabbed the opportunity to sit down and chat with Kim Swift, Portal co-creator and project lead on the forthcoming first-person puzzler, Quantum Conundrum. We discussed the inevitability of comparisons with her previous hit, the constraints of making a game on a tight budget, and why kids are better gamers than we’ll ever be.

On some level, your brain knows the right place to head toward when playing Quantum Conundrum. Created by the co-creator of Portal, despite certainly being a different game, the puzzles seem to stimulate that same lateral place that requires you enter into the reinterpretation of physics that inhabits the gaming world. Except this time, it’s a lot fluffier.

We've previously explored Quantum Conundrum's "Fluffy Dimension." Today, Square Enix sent out screens of a much less inviting permutation, one with a bit more gravity to it -- the "Heavy Dimension." Of course, heaviness is a bit harder to convey visually than fluffiness.

The PAX debut of Quantum Conundrum showed off some new creative juices from Kim Swift, one of the folks responsible for Portal's brilliant mechanics. Now, having seen the puzzle/platformer in its latest state, Quantum Conundrum shows what Swift learned from, and is capable of doing without Valve...

Kim Swift and Airtight Games' upcoming first-person puzzler, Quantum Conundrum, will arrive this summer. Publisher Square Enix announced the new Summer 2012 launch window, reducing the quantum flux variation emanating from the previous launch window of "2012." Quantum Conundrum will be available on PC, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

We recently cornered Swift for chat on Quantum Conundrum and its new "fluffy dimension." You can read it right here.

Beyond a couple of videos of creator Kim Swift playing Quantum Conundrum, details have been pretty quiet about the game from Airtight Games. Today we’ve received a load of fluff. Aha! A joke about PR. A bunch of new, extremely pink screenshots are below, along with some information about the fluffy dimension of the game.

*INEVITABLE COMPARISON TO PORTAL*

Now that’s out of the way, let’s all drool over Kim Swift’s upcoming Quantum Conundrum, which looks like what a computer game would look like if Pixar made computer games. That’s just a fact rather than a wild, hastily decided upon and ill-conceived opinion based on eight minutes of footage shown at CES 2012 and narrated by Kim. Now that I mention it, I did just watch just such a video and decided that anyone who didn’t have a massive grin on their face for at least half of it was probably a pod person. Now, smile. I expect to see the rictus grin of a terrified corpse when I observe you all through my periscope momentarily.

After Airtight Games' last project, Dark Void, failed to succeed with critics and at retail, the studio crept back into relative quiet for the majority of 2010. Aside from a job listing popping up late in the year for "several AAA titles," and the high-profile hire of Portal lead Kim Swift just before Dark Void's launch, the studio kept mum all the way until this past summer.

Just before PAX, however, Japanese publisher Square Enix teased a big reveal for Swift's promised game. Days later, Quantum Conundrum was announced -- another first-person puzzler -- leaving us to wonder what else the studio might be working on. "There are currently two projects at Airtight: ours, and another unannounced project," Swift told me during a pre-New York Comic Con preview for Square's titles. "I can't speak to what the game is," she added (unsurprisingly).

The Airtight Games site offers only a bit more assistance in divining the studio's other project, calling it, "another ambitious AAA title in a genre that is both unique and refreshingly unexplored," and teasing the image above. Swift did tell me that 16 folks at Airtight out of approximately 50 are currently head-down on Quantum Conundrum, leaving a sizable team for other things.

And those 35 or so people have had plenty of time to get started, if development of the studio's other, "mid-sized" project is any indication. "We've technically been working on [Quantum Conundrum] for a year, but we didn't really go into production until maybe like, six, seven months ago. Not long," Swift explained with a laugh. "You'd be surprised at how many things 16 folks can make."

AG's official site also promises "more news and announcements in the near future," so perhaps the studio is ready to fully awake from its year-long silence.

Of the many cool games being shown at PAX this year, Quantum Conundrum is my favorite. It's a first-person puzzle game from Kim Swift, the co-creator of Portal. I was instantly reminded of Portal when she showed it to me, but instead of creating holes in the wall you are shifting the world around you into new dimensions...
