#syndicate Syndicate is the latest casualty of Australia's antique classification laws, and also hopefully one of the last. Because of this, I will not legally be allowed to purchase the game, despite the fact I am 31 years old. More »

You remember that first time you saw the Syndicate dude make a security guard dude shoot himself in the head? Surprise, surprise, it doesn't get any less messed up when you see it performed in subsequent trailers, as evidenced above.

In the future, your brain will be infused with special technology to unlock the massive potential within you. Also, the company you work for will be headed by a surly Scot and a beautiful wherever Rosario Dawson is from.

EA's announced both Brian Cox and Rosario Dawson will lend their voices to Syndicate, the Starbreeze reboot of the classic strategy game from the '90s. Joining them is Michael Wincott, who you may remember as the bad guy from The Crow. Gamers may better recognize his pipes as The Prophet of Truth in Halo 2, and as Death in the upcoming Darksiders 2. Dawson will play Lily Drawl, a "rising star" at EuroCorp; Cox plays Eurocorp board member Jack Denham and Wincott plays veteran agent Jules Merit.

#syndicate On the left we have Rosario Dawson, in my opinion one of the most attractive actors working today. On the right, a soulless husk with eyes that have seen such horrors... such horrors. A creepy vessel used to transport Dawson's voice into EA's Syndicate. She looks worse than Cox. More »

It is now common practice for Electronic Arts (EA) to include an online pass in new copies of its games that must be activated in order to access online features. However, Syndicate, which EA will publish later this month, will arrive free of any online pass. A producer at EA tells Eurogamer that the online co-op in Syndicate is equal in substance to the single-player campaign and everyone should have access to the entire game...

EA will break with tradition when Syndicate launches later this month. EA Partners executive producer Jeff Gamon told Eurogamer that Starbreeze's reboot would ship without an online pass, in the hopes of lowering the barrier of entry for the game's multiplayer side.

"We want as little resistance or barriers to entry as possible," Gamon said. "The co-op is equal billing in this. We wanted everyone who owns a copy of the game to have access to the entire product." It's policy for EA to include an online pass in all of its games. Curiously, this policy does not always extend to EA Partners games like Crysis 2 and Portal 2, both of which shipped without online passes. Meanwhile, Bulletstorm required a pass for its online co-op mode.

"Under normal circumstances it would have had an online pass, but because it didn't have competitive multiplayer and because we wanted as many people as possible to be playing co-op, we got away with it," Gamon added. "Maybe another reason for not having the Online Pass is we were confident in the scope of the online game." Throughout the nine multiplayer maps, he says players can expect "a good six, seven hours" on a single playthrough. "That and the single-player campaign means hopefully we won't see much in the way of early second hand sales and rentals," Gamon concluded before absconding with Princess Zelda.

#syndicate In the bleak corporate future of Syndicate, an intracranial DART 6 chip brings you before the "gateway into ultimate consciousness." This infomercial oozes Snow Crash-esque fiction, and know that in-game, you can toggle this augmented reality on and off. It coats your environment in a weird topographical aesthetic, highlights friends and foes through walls, and gives you extra firepower. If you haven't given the game a spin yet, give the multiplayer co-op demo a shot, out now on PSN and Xbox Live. More »

In this new video, Syndicate executive producer Ben O'Donnell walks us through the just-released 4-player co-op demo, detailing some of the features of the upcoming game's co-op modes. More »

Syndicate, as you probably know by now, is an FPS set in the classic universe first established by Bullfrog in 1993. We have taken all the great story elements from the original game – the setting, the mood, the agents and above all the chips – and transferred into a much faster-paced and visceral game. Syndicate is not just your average FPS, though. We did this by creating a gameplay mechanic called “Breaching,” which effectively simulates an agent using his embedded military-grade DART 6 chip to interact with other chips in the world – whether they are located inside objects or human beings.

But it’s not all about the chips. No FPS can do without providing the player with an arsenal of bad-ass weapons, and we had access to some excellent examples to work with from the original games, fortified with some ideas of our own. You will find the usual suspects like sniper rifles, assault rifles and pistols, although you shouldn’t expect them to be anything like you are used to from contemporary shooters. Some of the upgrades you are able to get will transform these seemingly standard weapons into something else entirely: Alternate fire modes that turn an assault rifle into a sniper rifle and cover-penetrating ammunition are just two of the many upgrades you can bestow upon your favorite weapon. Upgrades aside, there are also some new and futuristic weapons that are a ton of fun to handle. The Gauss Gun can lock on to select a particular enemy and then bend bullets to take him out while you are behind cover. Or simply pick up the COIL rifle and reduce those pesky snipers to a pile of ash. The choice is yours!

In co-op play there are a slew of weapons to choose from as you play the game, and all of them can be upgraded in multiple ways. We have designed our research and upgrade system in such a way that the choice is always with you as a player. It will be you who decides what upgrades your Syndicate’s scientists will research, so you won’t be stuck with upgrades for weapons you rarely use. You might not be a CEO, but you certainly are in charge in this game.

But enough about the game overview, I am here to talk more about the Demo for Syndicate!
We here at Starbreeze have chosen Western Europe, the first of the co-op campaign missions, to feature in this demo. This level has quite a lot of significance to us and was one of the first maps we built and completed.

Western Europe is based on the same map from the original game and we have taken great care in bringing it back to life in our re-imagining of the game. Players familiar with the old map will no doubt recognize the flow and general layout, but we have also added quite a few new details, not least of which are the iconic light towers.

The story of the co-op campaign sees you, the players, involved in brutal and ruthless corporate warfare taking place across the globe in 2069. As a new Agent of Wulf Western – a new corporate outfit on the rise – it is up to you and your friends to take on rival Syndicates on their own ground, eliminating their personnel, stealing their tech, and taking over their market share.

In the demo you’ll be challenging Cayman Global; they have established a military outpost in Western Europe that is threatening your own Syndicate’s expansion in the region. This is of course not acceptable, and it’s time to take action.

6791805105_ea7c0edfd3_z.jpg

We have designed the mission in such a way that new players will have a chance to get used to the unique and different mechanics that Syndicate has to offer. These mechanics are all linked to the DART 6 chip your Agent has lodged in his brain. With the use of this chip, you can access the “dataverse.” You can manipulate mechanisms, weapons and even other human beings that are chipped in a multitude of ways. We call this interaction a “Breach.”

The very basic function of your DART chip allows you to heal (breach) your team member. If healing comes too late, you can also reboot them if they go down. This was really our core mechanic for the co-op game and it helped us create a game that firmly centers on team play. It also allowed us to create a challenging game which, particularly on Hard and Expert modes, will provide countless hours of gameplay. The normal mode of the mission is intended to be fun and engaging for everyone, but once you master breaching and have moved on to utilize your available breach applications – software upgrades with different functions for your DART chip – then we definitely recommend checking out the harder difficulty settings!

When we set out to create Syndicate, we wanted to create a fast-paced, visceral gaming experience that would put the player right at the core of the brutal and merciless world of the original Syndicate. We had a massive advantage in the fact that today’s technology can deliver this experience in a lot more realistic way than was possible 18 years ago.

It was clear to us from the start that Syndicate would come to PS3. Apart from the obvious technical advantages, the fact that PS3 owners can play Syndicate co-op for free on PSN was a major draw for us. We certainly hope that many people will take advantage of this possibility because the best way to find out what Syndicate truly is about is to pick up a controller and dive into the co-op demo later today!

All of us at Starbreeze hope you enjoy the game as much as we do. And who knows, you might be joining up with one of us soon to make sure Wulf Western gains total market dominance!

During this week's PlayStation Blogcast, on which our own Ludwig Kietzmann is a "special guest," PlayStation Sr. Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman (yay, alliteration!) confirmed the planned multiplayer demo for Twisted Metal would hit PSN next week, on January 31.

If you like your manslaughter a bit less vehicular, you may want to check out a demo for another February-bound title, EA's rebooted Syndicate. It will also be a multiplayer demo, focusing on the game's co-op side, but you already knew that. Who needs expensive implants and cool tech for remembering things? Not you, buddy!

The co-op demo for Syndicate launches on Xbox Live in North America and Europe on January 31, while the PlayStation Network version drops the same day in North America, and on February 1 for Europe. The demo covers the "Western Europe" co-op mission, in which you steal blueprints from Cayman Global and assassinate Colonel Enrico Gabron, one of nine co-op challenges in the full game.

Liking the Syndicate page on Facebook begets access to remixed tracks of the original Syndicate soundtrack by Digitalism, Flux Pavillion and Skrillex, which is newsworthy because until just now we thought Skrillex was the singer in some trendy rap-metal band. And possibly a girl. Huh.

#syndicate I'll go ahead and call this a glimmer of hope. When we first got a glimpse of the FPS reboot of the PC strategy classic Syndicate, I was dispirited. The original Syndicate was a isometric strategy game with a cold, still-iconic art style and a generally groovy vibe. The action sequences I saw in the reboot's trailer looked more like a Deus Ex: Human Revolution knock-off than anything remotely like the Syndicate I knew and loved. More »

Syndicate, the original title of twisted corporate greed and cyberpunk inhumanity, is hitting GOG on Thursday, Jan. 19 for $5.99. GOG's Syndicate will come with the game manual, artwork and avatars, but until it's officially released GOG is having a little dystopian fun.

Ten players can win a copy of Syndicate by forming the best team of four people -- yourself and three others, real or imaginary, dead, alive or not born yet -- to lead the DRM-free revolution as the world's largest Syndicate. Just drop a description of your team in the GOG comments before 7 a.m. EST on Jan. 19 for a chance to prove yourself in the corrupt corporate world.

You and three of your friends can try out the new Syndicate game this month, unless you're in Australia. EA announced plans to release a four-player co-op demo on PSN and XBLA, available "the end of January" and lasting "a limited time." The full game arrives February 21 in North America and February 24 in Europe.

The demo comprises one of Syndicate's nine co-op missions, called "Western Europe." Players work to assassinate Cayman Global's "Colonel Enrico Gabron" and steal his blueprints, after making their way into Cayman Global.

Syndicate will not launch in Australia next year and EA will not alter the original game or seek an appeal. The publisher informed Joystiq this afternoon that it finds the Australian government's policy to deny adults the right to play Syndicate "regrettable."

"The game will be not be available in Australia despite its enthusiastic response from fans. We were encouraged by the government's recent agreement to adopt an 18+ age rating for games. However, delays continue to force an arcane censorship on games - cuts that would never be imposed on books or movies," EA Corporate Communications' Tiffany Steckler wrote Joystiq in a statement. "We urge policy makers to take swift action to implement an updated policy that reflects today's market and gives its millions of adult consumers the right to make their own content choices."

Syndicate was recently refused classification in Australia, due to it being "unsuitable for a minor to see or play" according to the classification board. Australian classification standards reject classification for video games only deemed suitable for citizens over the age of 15.

Syndicate has been refused classification in Australia, due to being "unsuitable for a minor to see or play." The current Australian classification standards still reject classification (i.e. ban) for any game that is only suitable for citizens over the age of 15.

"Combatants take locational damage and can be explicitly dismembered, decapitated or bisected by the force of the gunfire. The depictions are accompanied by copious bloodspray and injuries are shown realistically and with detail," reads the Classification report obtained by VG24/7. "Flesh and bone are often exposed while arterial sprays of blood continue to spurt from wounds at regular intervals," the report states, discussing an example mission."

The most high-profile Aussie rejection in 2011 was Mortal Kombat, which tried to appeal the decision and lost. The Witcher 2 avoided the issue with a small edit to pass the board. We've contacted EA to find out if the publisher will appeal or resubmit the title with alterations.
