Developer DICE has included a host of options in the Battlefield 4 beta test designed to make the game easier to play for those who suffer from colorblindness.

Those who suffer from colorblindness generally see a distorted field of colors, different from those seen by the non-colorblind. By changing certain hues within the game to those the colorblind are more easily able to discern, DICE is able to make Battlefield 4 far more inclusive to potential virtual soldiers. As Reddit user Orli155 points out, the squad colors in the Battlefield 4 beta can be altered to appear more recognizable to those suffering from Deuteranopia, Tritanopia or Protanopia - three of the most prevalent forms of colorblindness.

The Battlefield 4 beta is currently ongoing on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms. The game is slated to make its retail debut on October 29.

I tend to just glom onto one mode in multiplayer games, which means when I’m playing other modes and maps*, and people are shouting at me to do the thing with the thing, all I hear is “Blah blah Craig is handsome and best blah”. I just stick to what I know, because I don’t need affirmation. Anyway, other people like variety in their games, and therefore demand modes for every occasion from the likes of DICE. Battlefield 4 will come out with seven game modes across ten maps, and I will now list them and give some commentary based on my previous experiences on the Battlefield.(more…)

I’m more of a far-off admirer of Battlefield than someone with an active interest in it. I have my binoculars trained on it and I can tell it’s beautiful, it’s big, and it looks like a lot of fun. But I have Arma 3 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (I’ve been casually playing CS:GO with some friends for the past few evenings), and there’s no more room for another shooter where I have to know things about the guns. For those of you who really want to play it, you’ll be able to on October the 1st for free: that’s when the open beta will allow everyone to hop on Conquest mode on the Siege of Shanghai map.(more…)

Battlefield 4's open beta is set to detonate on the PC, 360 and PS3 on October 1, EA revealed on Friday. The game's next-gen counterparts have also been given release dates; November 12 for PlayStation 4 and November 19 for Xbox One.

EA noted in the announcement that beta players will be able to "learn maps, unlock items and build stats" for use in the October 29 release of Battlefield 4. Players can also carry over stats, unlocks and awards from the 360 and PS3 to the Xbox One or PS4 versions once they launch in November. Those looking to upgrade should check into the programs that offer deals towards buying the next-gen version of games they already own.

Those that sign up for Battlefield 4 Premium, pre-order Battlefield 4 Digital Deluxe or that have purchased Medal of Honor: Warfighter's deluxe or limited editions will be granted access to the "exclusive Battlefield 4 beta," though EA has not announced a launch date for it.

Specially marked retail copies of Battlefield 4 for PS3 will include a one-time use voucher allowing you to upgrade to the PS4 digital version of the game for a small price. This is how the "discounted" upgrade scheme will work, first announced by Sony president Andrew House last month during the company's Gamescom keynote.

Presumably this is how other eligible PS3 games can transition into their PS4 counterparts, though we've followed up with Sony for confirmation.

Only four games are participating in this promotion as of right now: Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4. The pricing to go from PS3 to PS4 version for each game is determined by the publishers.

DICE revealed the official PC requirements for Battlefield 4 this week, and surprise: You're going to need a fair deal of horsepower to play at recommended specs.

At minimum, the PC shooter demands Windows Vista SP2 with dual-core AMD or Intel processors, 4GB of RAM, and a 512GB GeForce 8800 GT or Radeon HD 3870 graphics card.

It's a big old leap to what's recommended: Windows 8 to start off with, and either a six-core AMD or quad-core Intel processor, supported by 8GB RAM and 3GB graphic memory. DICE suggests Radeon HD 7870 and GeForce GTX 660 graphics cards.

Oh, and make sure you've got 30GB spare of disk space spare. You can check out the full specs after the break, but don't forget, you have a plenty of time to gear up your PC before Battlefield 4 is released on October 29.

Watching this video of Battlefield 4′s multiplayer, as an EA producer views a huge battle for control of an island chain, reminded me of how I used to play Battlefield 2: I’d stay after work at PC Gamer, along with Tom Francis and the quietly brilliant Steve Williams. We’d load up a 64-man map on the LAN and mess about for a couple of hours. We’d be recording all this, then we’d watch it back, laughing at the demo. We were so cool. There’s an element of this in this narrated live recording of DICE’s ‘Paracel Storm’ map: the camera zooms around, taking stock of the mayhem as it happens, flowing like an unfettered war photographer. I’m not really bothered about the game, but I might just buy it for the spectator view.(more…)

DICE’s upcoming Battlefield 4 has captured the attention of military shooter enthusiasts for a host of reasons, not the least of which is the game’s promise of 64-player multiplayer warfare running at a smooth 60 frames per second on PS4. At Gamescom, I got some hands-on time with the first PS4 build of the game — we were among the first group to play the PS4 build outside of DICE. Here’s a quick after-action report.

For starters, the game runs at fluid 60 fps and its benefits were instantly noticeable on PS4. This translates to a decidedly smoother, much more responsive feel compared to Battlefield 3 on PS3. The speedy framerate means that the game simply controls better, whether you’re quickly sweeping your aiming reticule to ward off a surprise close-range attack or making smaller aiming adjustments to nail a precise headshot. Sprinting and vaulting over low cover also feels much more responsive and gives you an edge in the game’s sprawling battle zones, where death lurks around every corner and peers out of every window.

BF4 also benefits hugely from the many refinements of DualShock 4. The overhauled L2 and R2 triggers wrap snugly around your index fingers and respond crisply to every input, giving a satisfyingly precise and tactile feel as you fire your weapons. In the build I played, L1 and R1 handled grenades and a radial command menu, respectively. Tapping down on the PS4’s refined directional pad cycled through weapon firing modes (semi-auto, burst fire, and fully automatic fire), while tapping left deployed class-specific equipment such as the Engineer’s RPG.

9570031988_15f286822f_z.jpg

Though the PS4 build was in a pre-release state, it provided a window into the game’s visual strengths. The environments shimmer with eye-catching details, from billowing flames and smoke to grit blowing in the wind. Palm trees swayed dramatically, casting intricate shadows while rocket strikes lit up the surroundings. The audio was also noteworthy, surrounding the player in a symphony of shrieking mortars, whizzing bullets, and the eerie ping of nearby ricochets.

Developer DICE has confirmed that the PS4 version will support a full 64 players per match via PSN, plus an additional two slots reserved for Commander players. But more on that in a minute. BF4’s 64 player count means that the PS4 version is in full parity with the game’s PC counterpart, and the game’s large-scale matches will span the land, sea and air as battles rage between infantry, aircraft, tanks and APCs and amphibious vehicles. DICE promises that amphibious combat will be a major highlight in BF4, after having been largely minimized in the past few Battlefield titles, and that players will have to negotiate heaving waves while attempting to outmaneuver enemy ships.

9570031962_a277cd7313_z.jpg

On the Domination level I played, a tropical battleground dubbed Paracel Storm, I clashed with enemy forces while locking down strategic points. The environments feel more interactive: you can open and close doors in order to avoid detection or trap enemies. And the new “Levelution” environment destruction feature figured prominently into the battle, as C4 charges and grenades gradually whittled down hardened checkpoints and exposed flag defenders to enemy fire. BF4 also marks the return of the Commander class, which is no longer a physical presence in the battle but can support his team by ordering supply drops, issuing squad orders, and foiling his enemy counterpart with EMP blasts and UAV deployments. In the final version of the game, BF4 will enable Commander players to guide their squads via a tablet application.

I was only able to play two matches on PS4, but I’ll definitely be diving back in when Battlefield 4 hits PS4 this holiday. Have any questions? Leave them in the comments below!

Battlefield 4 players will be able to move all of their stats from Xbox 360 to Xbox One, or from Playstation 3 to Playstation 4, in a one-time transfer. The transfer includes all stats, unlocks, awards, assignments, rank and all the premium content and memberships players may have.

This follows the announcement of a similar profile-transfer system for Call of Duty: Ghosts, made during Activision's multiplayer livestream today.

Microsoft's Xbox One will include the Season Pass Guarantee, a program that carries participating Xbox 360 season pass content to the Xbox One, for free, if the player owns both versions of the game. Battlefield 4 and Ghosts will support this program. There's no word if Sony will roll out a similar system for the Playstations 3 and 4.

This holiday, DICE will unwrap the next generation of all-out warfare with Battlefield 4. That means best-in-class multiplayer is coming to PS4 with huge 64-player battles, running at a smooth 60 frames-per-second.

Even if you start playing on PS3, we want to make your transition to PS4 easy. That’s why we’re notifying the devoted Battlefield and PlayStation communities that all of the time and effort you spend building up your Battlefield 4 stats will carry over when you upgrade to PS4.

That way, on October 29th, you can get in the game without any worries that you’ll have to start ranking up all over again when PS4 launches. We got your back.

Today we also wanted to inform the community that DICE is promising to keep the action going all year long with the return of Premium membership for Battlefield 4. With membership, players can expect themed digital expansion packs, new weekly content, and personalization options. And just as your stats, unlocks, and rank will be transferable from PS3 to PS4, so too will Battlefield 4 Premium membership.

Tune into EA’s 2013 Gamescom press conference on August 20th at 10:00AM ET for the first look at Battlefield 4 Premium content. You’ll also get the scoop on an all-new Battlefield 4 multiplayer mode and map.

Battlescreen won't work on PS3 or Xbox 360 versions of Battlefield 4, Battlelog Assistant Producer Jesper Nielsen tells Engadget. Battlelog for Battlefield 4 includes a Battlescreen feature that populates the player's current, live map on a tablet, smartphone or PC - but only when playing the game on Xbox One, PS4 or PC.

"Battlelog is powered by the web, and that has a lot of implications," Nielsen says. "There are a lot of different things you can do, things you can do faster, rather than building stuff in native code."

Battlelog for Battlefield 4 will feature regional leaderboards, will allow players to build weapons loadouts on a secondary screen before starting the game or during wait time between deaths, and will let players change servers mid-game, alongside the standard stats readings.

Battlefield 4 is a game about stuff. Mainly – as with every Battlefield – multiplayer’s the main event, but you wouldn’t know it based on EA’s marketing efforts. Campaign this, “real human story” that, the profound subtlety of giant explosions blah blah blah. There may not be any dogs (wait for the Canine Kill DLC, releasing exclusively on everything this fall), but it’s hard not to see Battlefield’s single-player as the little tin soldier that marches behind Call of Duty with saucer-eyes of admiration. This time, though? Well, at least some of Battlefield’s setpieces look bigger. But the story? Er, if you put it in a room with synopses of every other military shooter, I probably couldn’t tell the difference.

I’ve figured out why developers and publishers make game engine trailers. Like the Wizard Of Oz, the game engine is responsible for what’s going on behind the scenes. It is the giant, floating head that demands tribute. In this case, the tribute is four minutes of people talking about Frostbite 3 using terms like “Seamless Reality”. It skips extolling how these grown men spend their days and nights attempting to make explosions more explodey, debris more chunky, and eyes more oculary. Such is the fragile ego of a game engine, if such a tribute is not made then Frostbite 3 would return to its burrow and gnaw off its own feet.(more…)

Bundle up, it's gonna be a cheap ride. Retailers have a tendency to take advantage of supply constraints by forcing early adopters into crappy bundles during a console's launch. Amazon is bucking that trend with two bundles that offer legitimate savings. The Battlefield 4 Launch Day Bundle includes the console, along with Battlefield 4, a year of Playstation Plus, and an Amazon-exclusive Battlefield 4 "battlepack" for $500. [Amazon] A similar bundle replaces Battlefield 4 with Killzone Shadow Fall for the same price, but with no DLC pack. [Amazon] Are these huge savings? Certainly not. In fact, we wouldn't list such a small discount for an item unless it was as high-profile as this. We don't expect to see many (if any) big discounts on the next consoles during their launch windows, so we feel good recommending these bundles if you were planning on buying one of those games anyway. Other things to note are that these bundles come with guaranteed release day delivery, depending your state you may not pay sales tax, and if you're a Prime Member (free trial here), you'll get free shipping. Developers DICE never officially sanctioned the use of mods in Battlefield 3, fearing it could lead to stuff like exploits in multiplayer matches (which, you know, happened anyway). So has the studio reversed that decision for the upcoming Battlefield 4? Of course not. Speaking with PC Gamer at E3, DICE general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson broke the bad news in about as honest and up-front a manner as possible. Which is at least something! "We get that question a lot", he says. "I always answer the same thing, and then the community calls me bad names. We get the feedback, we understand it. We also would like to see more player-created content, but we would never do something like this if we feel we couldn’t do this 100 percent. That means we need to have the right tools available, we need to have the right security around this regarding what parts of the engine we let loose, so to say. So for BF4 we don’t have any planned mod support, I have to be blunt about saying that. We don’t." Battlefield 4 mod support ruled out by DICE [PC Gamer]
