With some great power-ups to collect, including the Space Jump, Plasma Beam and Spider Ball, this is an enjoyable game that isn't just for hardcore fans.

What's Hot: Detailed graphics for a Game Boy title, plenty of weapons and abilities, hunting Metroids.

What's Not: Getting lost, terrain looks the same.

While it wasn't the breakthrough in the franchise that Super Metroid went on to become, Metroid II: Return of Samus still brought at least as many new gameplay ideas and power ups to the series as the Super NES episode, many of which are still seen today in modern episodes.

Metroid II isn't what Metroid is any more. In the 20 years since this second installment in the series shipped, Samus Aran's adventures have become much more focused and guided. Map screens, position-orienting beacons and other navigational aids have moved the franchise away from the open and unassisted exploration that defined early efforts like this one -- and that makes Return of Samus all the more shocking to return to. Metroid II is bleak. Lonesome. And really hard to follow...
