Telltale Games announced this evening during the VGX a new series based on George R.R. Martin's A Song of... oh, please, you all know it as Game of Thrones. Rumored since last month, the project is now official and will be based on the HBO series.

Much like Telltale's critically acclaimed other game with a massive body count, The Walking Dead, the Game of Thrones project is in development with HBO. Planned for 2014.

Well, this all seems sort of inevitable in hindsight, doesn’t it? Telltale has more or less perfected its episodic storytelling formula, and bounteous riches are beginning to flow. And from among those glittering prizes and sparkling gem clusters, the Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us dev has – if a report from IGN is to be believed – plucked a veritable holy grail. It now allegedly has some sort of Game of Thrones game in the oven, though exact details are still hazy. This does, however, link up pretty well with my Dan Connors interview from earlier this year, so I am cautiously optimistic about the (for now) rumor’s veracity.

Hardcore Westeros fans probably know that the father of their favorite medieval fantasy series was once a devoted comic-book reader, with the name George R.R. Martin showing up in old Marvel Comics letters pages. And, while some of Martin’s sci-fi work has been adapted to comics, it never took off the way you’d expect. But he’ll get another when a new comics imprint publishes an illustration-centric version of his Meathouse Man short story. Revealed today via Entertainment Weekly, Amazon Publishing's Jet City Comics also will be doing comic books based on works by other sci-fi luminaries: Jet City will publish the following comics in 2013: An original comic adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s story “Meathouse Man,” illustrated by Raya Golden, and a re-release of “The Hedge Knight” by Ben Avery and Mike S. Miller, a prequel set in the universe of Martin’s best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire epic fantasy series (the inspiration for the hit HBO program Game of Thrones). “Meathouse Man” will be released as a single issue comic in digital format in October 2013; “The Hedge Knight” will be released as a collected graphic novel in print and digital formats in November 2013; and its sequel, “The Sworn Sword,” will follow in early 2014.An adaptation of Hugh Howey’s bestselling dystopian novel Wool by comics veterans Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, and illustrator Jimmy Broxton, where the remnants of humanity live in a massive silo hundreds of stories below the surface of the ruined and toxic landscape of Earth. Karakter design studio in Germany were brought on by HBO to do the concept art for pretty much every VFX shot in the show's second season. Including the epic Battle of Blackwater. Having made a name for themselves doing video game work, on series like Killzone and The Settlers, they won themselves an Emmy last year for their contributions to the effects in Game of Thrones. In the gallery below, you'll see some of the best examples of their work. What's interesting here is the fact that in many cases half the scene had already been shot by the actors; Karakter's role was to take that green screen and/or location work and then imagine the epic fantasy landscape required to flesh out HBO's vision of Westeros. You'll want to expand the images; in standard size many will simply look like screengrabs; it's only seen at full size that you see the artist's brush strokes turning a drab location into a towering castle. The world of Game of Thrones is more familiar than you might think, especially if you're familiar with Dubrovnik. That's a place in Croatia. Many memorable scenes in the last season were filmed there, and Redditor Rach11 took pictures to help us compare and contrast. From these pictures, it's clear that CGI was used to transform these locations into Westeros—but even so, it's still rather recognizable as Dubrovnik. Take a look: "Lots of the scenes are filmed at this Fort just outside of old town up on a hill. Most of the times people are walking around by stone walls and paths it's either here or on the city walls around Dubrovnik." "A few of the scenes from Qarth were filmed on nearby Lokrum island."
