With all the subtlety of a freight train, Ubisoft has unveiled Assassin's Creed III. Through its debut trailer, box art and some opening details in a Game Informer story, we have a good sense of Ubisoft's vision for AC III - and then some. But for every answer provided, many more questions remain...

#assassinscreed Sometimes, the internet moves so fast it makes your head spin. Take this piece of fan art, for example. It's been less than a week since we knew what Assassin's Creed III's hero looked like, yet in that time somebody has managed to already build a replica tomahawk that looks identical to the one he carries in the game. Yesterday’s Assassin’s Creed III firsto-revealo-CGIo-trailero created a spot of inadvertent drama by leaving out a single word in a sentence of text at the end. That word was ‘date’. And the sentence it should have been in was ‘PC format release to be confirmed.’

Cue screaming. Not by me, as I did think it was clear, but some people got the wrong end of the stick because of the peculiar wording.

To them I say, it’s okay! It’s okay! It doesn’t mean that they’ve got cold feet about making a PC version. It’s meant to say ‘PC format release date to be confirmed.’ We have double-checked this with Ubisoft, and while we still don’t know quite when the PC version is due, we can reassure you that it is indeed due. Hugs!

His name's Ratohnhaké:ton, but you can just call him Connor, if you're into that whole Anglicization thing.

Hey there PlayStation Assassins!

After several years of work, by hundreds of some of the most talented developers on the planet, we are extraordinarily pleased to show you the very first official trailer for Assassin’s Creed III. Today, we’d like to offer a glimpse of the rich backdrop provided by the American Revolution, as well as sneaking in some details about our Native American protagonist: Connor.

Keep your eyes peeled for a certain historic figure you may recognize (trust me, he’ll be hard to miss)… and ponder his role both in a story of the foundation of a nation and the ceaseless conflict between the Templars and Assassins.

As previously announced, Assassin’s Creed III ships for PS3 on October 30, 2012.

The American Revolution is a fascinating setting to have moved AssCreed onto, and not just because it puts me in mind of my beloved Colonization. Proto-technology, a changeable climate, shades of grey on both sides of the conflict and recognisable mythology to apply conspiracy theories to. My major concern is that the English will be cast as boo-hiss baddies, but then again the real-life modern day England is currently being governed by boo-hiss baddies, so I suppose it’s apt. Nonetheless, we’re told that new and unspellable Assassin hero Ratohnaké:ton is “of Native American and English heritage”, so presumably there will be some sympathy for King and country in there after all.

After a week of leaks and rumours, Ubisoft have officially revealed, explained and entrailerised the confusingly-named fifth Assassin’s Creed. Snow, tomahawks and George Washington await you below.(more…)

Following a leaked image of Assassin's Creed III's main character, Ubisoft unveiled the box art for the game earlier today. While the image doesn't seem to reveal much at first glance, it actually provides a great deal of information about Assassin's Creed III's setting and main character. We Br...

As you can see from the image on the side here, Assassin's Creed III's box art has officially been released by Ubisoft, and it confirms what everyone on the Internet has been buzzing about for the last couple of days: the lead character is of Native American descent, and the game takes place during the American Revolution.

All sorts of different art leaks had been popping up over the last day or two, some via a Best Buy employee posting promotional art sent to the store in anticipation of the reveal, and another via Game Informer's website (snagged by a NeoGAF user), which inadvertently posted a banner showing a new assassin holding a tomahawk and old-timey pistol against the backdrop of Washington crossing the Delaware.

And now we have confirmation of all of that. The lead character will be (at least partly) of Native American descent, and will be stabbing/shooting dudes against the backdrop of America's fight for independence. It's not that I hate the British or anything, but frankly, I'm quite looking forward to the notion of dropping a few tomahawks on a few Redcoat skulls. It'll be just like the movie The Patriot! Except with time travel. And without Mel Gibson. And maybe not horrible.
