Good morning, you! How was your weekend?

Okay, two hours is probably a bit too much for one sitting of Mechwarrior Tactics gameplay footage, and I have to warn you that this unedited footage of someone playing a slow strategy game, complete with phases of silent clicking. But assuming you do actually want to digest all that, you get to see a wad of gameplay, mech loadouts, and of course some tactics. The game is in closed beta right now, and this footage is taken from that phase of the game.(more…)

Mech. When you hear that word, what are the first couple things that spring to mind? “Big” is probably one, right? And the other? It’s almost assuredly “rebel.” I mean, just look at them. They clearly don’t give a goddamn about you or your rules. So MechWarrior Tactics is some kind of crazy bizarro world spin on traditional videogame rocket-’em, sock-’em robotery. In this strange alternate dimension, multiple mechs do everything you tell them, and they’re tiny widdle babies! I mean, I could just eat them up. It would cause me inconceivable amounts of pain, but I could do it. At any rate, Tactics’ closed beta just kicked off. Do you want in? OK, let me rephrase that: Do you between-$20-and-$120 want in? Well then, proceed past the break for brain-enriching infobolt.

MechWarrior Tactics, the upcoming turn-based strategy game by Acronym Games and Roadhouse Interactive set in the BattleTech universe is entering a "friends and family" closed beta program on May 22.

Those that register on the game's forums will receive a beta key "sometime after" May 22, according to an official post on said forums. As of now, it has yet to be determined if you are expected to play the game with friends and family, or ignore them.

[Thanks, Joe!]

I rub my eyes and blink. Something’s not right. The living room furniture’s in its proper place, but the trusty carpet – grizzled veteran of countless drink spillages – seems… different. Segmented. I glance down at the grid-based mech marathon unfolding on my PC, then back up again, and the terrifying truth suddenly dawns on me. Hexes. Hexes everywhere. I dash outside – one turn at a time – into a blinding tangle of sunlight and gold-tinged grids. Horrified, I run back upstairs, only to catch my reflection in my bathroom mirror. I am gridded. I fall down weeping in vain hope that the tears will wash this waking nightmare from my seared retinas. This unsettling vision of my probable future has been brought to you by MechWarrior Tactics, which you can catch a glimpse of after the break.

We were impressed with the premiere presentation of MechWarrior Tactics during GDC. The free-to-play, turn-based strategy game set in the BattleTech universe looked good and included the stand-out feature of replaying actions in a cinematic after each turn. Here's a look at the game's UI and the cinematic feature in action.

We saw the free-to-play, turn-based MechWarrior: Tactics at this year's Game Developers Conference, and now you can see it, too. Despite being turn-based, combat plays out in real time, resulting in the cinematic fights you see below...

The long and storied BattleTech franchise is no stranger to gaming, so it might be weird to think that it has never gotten the turn-based strategy treatment. Seems like it perfect fit, too, considering its firm roots in the rich tabletop RPG universe. Luckily, the team at Acronym Games took notice, and started work on the first turn-based strategy game set in the BattleTech franchise, MechWarrior Tactics...

We got our first real look at MechWarrior Tactics today at GDC. The game fills a weird niche with some neat features. The free-to-play, turn-based strategy plays like something more akin to iOS treats Hero Academy or Words with Friends, with asynchronous or concurrent turn-based combat forming the heart of the game. It's a "core" title set in the BattleTech universe -- so, it's "mid-core"?

After each player makes his move in the one-versus-one, player-versus-player map, the game tosses all the turn-based pretense aside and replays the action in a spiffy cinematic. By the time MechWarrior Tactics launches later this year, developer hope to have the camera AI choose the sexy angles for maximum mech-exploding money shots. The camera is all about the long shots in the pre-alpha build.

At the end of a match, players are able to watch the whole match as one movie, and share it on their favorite social media platforms, like Friendster, YouTube and Facebook.

A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. Games and Infinite Game Publishing didn't go too deep into how the game's store will operate, but they did show us a booster pack which featured three armaments and a mech chassis. Like most of the current free-to-play games coming to market, money won't win the battle -- but it will speed up building the Atlas of your dreams.

The first screens of MechWarrior Tactics reveal a combination of realistic (well, "realistic") robots and environments, combined with classic strategy game hex grids. We're going to imagine there's a little robot who paints those on the ground every morning.

A new, free-to-play entry in the classic MechWarrior series has been announced for the second half of 2012. MechWarrior Tactics is in development at Roadhouse Interactive and A.C.R.O.N.Y.M. Games, with publishing duties handled by Infinite Game Publishing.

MechWarrior Tactics is a free-to-play, turn-based strategy game employing micro-transactions for purchasing "vital combat and cosmetic resources to outfit each Mech, assemble a lance of four Mechs, and then go online for epic multiplayer showdowns competing for large payouts and top billing on global leaderboards." Right now, that's all we've got to go on -- if you want to register a commander name, you can head over to MechWarrior Tactics' official site.

Otherwise, feel free to go mech shopping via our gallery below.
