A portion of an NWR review...

Even as a fairly hardcore fan of Spider-Man, I can't recommend the 3DS version. The GameCube Spider-Man games from ten years ago were better than this. If you must play the game to find out the packaging's promised “untold epilogue” to the film, at least the Wii version doesn't suffer from all the glitches.

Amazing Spider-Man's DS game spun by Dark Void Zero dev

Activision's Amazing Spider-Man game came in PS3, Xbox, Wii, 3DS, and DS flavors. Activision hasn't shown or talked about much outside of the HD version, to the point that this is likely to be your first look at the DS version - which has been out since June.

Developer Other Ocean Interactive - known for Dark Void Zero, among other things - got in touch with Joystiq to let us know it was responsible for the DS Spidey game - which, like previous DS Spidey tie-ins by developers like Griptonite, eschews the big-screen games' 3D action for hand-drawn, side-scrolling 2D.

It's a different take on the Amazing Spider-Man franchise, just like the movie was a different take on the origin story for some reason.

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes secures UK top spot for second week

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes "comfortably" kept The Amazing Spider-Man away from the highest spot on Chart-Track's UK sales chart. There were three new entries in the top five last week: the web-slinger swung into second, and Spec Ops: The Line and London 2012: The Official Video Game (about... London??) landed in third and fourth place, respectively.

The launch of Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC helped propel sales of the game up 121 percent. The launch of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on PS Vita had a similar impact, shooting the game into tenth place on the charts and sales of the game up 532 percent - making it the top selling Vita game last week "by a large margin."

#review There probably hasn't ever been a superhero who hasn't gone through the cycle of losing his/her powers, getting them back and becoming more powerful than ever. It's been the same for video game series devoted to costumed crimefighters. With Rocksteady Studios' Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, Batman's currently enjoying the best titles ever made in his image after years of terrible, thrown-together efforts. Meanwhile, it's been a transitional time for the Dark Knight's rival from Marvel Comics. The undisputed high point for the Web-Slinger's game appearances was Spider-Man 2: The Movie, a game that gave players a open-world Manhattan to swing through and fight crime in. Amazing Spider-Man revives some of the joys of that PS2 classic but also stumbles in how it tries to modernize the open-word superhero formula. More »

Yeah, yeah, Jim posted about this yesterday too. But he forgot to be rude to Activision. And what are you going to do about it? Fight us? You wouldn’t stand a chance.

So apparently Activision doesn’t want to sell any copies of The Amazing Spider-Man on PC. With the film coming out next Tuesday, it’s a timely release for the console versions this Friday. But in six weeks time when the game finally deigns to appear on Steam, we’ll all have moved on.

#review Japan loves Spider-Man. I mean they LOVE him. It's not the same with other American superheroes—Batman, Superman, and most of the recent Marvel movies tend to do poorly in at the Japanese box office. Even Avengers didn't get a major push in the Japanese media until after it proved to be a financial success in the West—and it's not coming to theaters until August. But Spider-Man has always been popular in Japan. Perhaps it's due to his similarity to Japan's own masked superhero—heck, he even had a live-action, power ranger style show in the late 70s. Because Spider-Man is a sure hit in Japan, his movies often get released in Japan before the rest of the world. Spider-Man 3 came out three days before its release in the West. The latest, The Amazing Spider-Man, opened in select theaters last weekend—nearly two weeks before the rest of the world. And Kotaku East was on hand to review it. More »
