#medalofhonor One of the Navy SEALS who consulted on EA's upcoming Medal of Honor: Warfighter may have done so with getting proper military permission to do so, according to the Los Angeles Times. This same person, identified by the newspaper as Matt Bissonnette, is also the author of No Easy Day, the controversial book that details the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden. More »

It's easy to forget sometimes that there can be a lot more to a first person shooter than its MMO-flavored competitive online multiplayer. For instance, Medal of Honor: Warfighter apparently lets you crawl through a flooded Philippinian wasteland, just like a real soldier once did. Thrilling!

No, you won't be hunting Osama Bin Laden. You'll just be playing multiplayer in places he theoretically went to.

Remember when Medal of Honor: Warfighter developer Danger Close Games said it would avoid cashing in on the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, because it "wasn't their story to tell?" Well, they're still not telling that story, thankfully. However, EA has found an alternate way to cash in on the hunt for the world's most notorious terrorist in the only way EA really knows how: through a marketing deal with a license holder.

Today, EA announced a partnership with Sony Pictures to release a downloadable map pack for Warfighter based on the upcoming film Zero Dark Thirty. The movie, which is directed by The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow, is based on the years-long manhunt for Bin Laden across various parts of the Middle East. This DLC pack will include two locations in Pakistan: the notorious Darra gun market, and the northern Chitral region, where Bin Laden purportedly hid out for an extended period.

In order to perhaps make this whole thing seem a bit less disgusting, EA will be donating $1 from each map pack download to its Project Honor campaign, an initiative the publisher founded to donate to various military charities. A minimum of $1 million will be donated out of the profits from the map pack.

While that's all well and good, there is literally no way to do anything related to Bin Laden at this point that doesn't look like a cheap publicity grab. The fact that this multiplayer pack is such a tangential relation to the hunt for Bin Laden altogether makes the association with Bigelow's film even weirder. It's not as if EA is licensing plot and/or characters from the movie. They're literally slapping a brand on a map pack and invoking the specter of Bin Laden for the sake of "authenticity."

Sorry EA, but when it comes to authentic Bin Laden hunting, your game was beaten years ago.

Sony Pictures is promoting the upcoming film Zero Dark Thirty, about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden, through the usual venue: Medal of Honor: Warfighter DLC. Wait, what?

The vaguely uncomfortable statement above is true: EA and Sony Pictures have partnered to make a map pack featuring two new multiplayer maps, Darra Gun Market and Chitral, inspired by the movie's take on the real locations, which were thought to be potential hideouts of the infamous terrorist. It'll be released in North America "the week of December 17" to coincide with the release of the movie.

$1 of the $9.99 will be earmarked to charity through EA's Project HONOR program. Those who buy the "limited edition" (basically just the first printing) in North America will get the DLC for free.

While the years of training that go into becoming an elite sniper are impressive, we'd be lying if we didn't say the coolest thing in this Medal of Honor: Warfighter video is how these guys can alter the sound of their voices. How do they make themselves sound like robots? So neat!

#medalofhonor Earlier this week, Electronic Arts came under fire for hosting links to the websites of companies that sell and make assault weapons and tactical gear on the Medal of Honor Warfighter website. Those links—connected to items that players will be able to use in the game—were accompanied by blog posts written by Warfighter producer Greg Goodrich. A write-up on the Gameological Society was among the first that took the publisher to task for the close linkage between the new Medal of Honor game and the sale of actual weapons. Today, EA has pulled the links page to those weapons and gear sites and ended the special Tomahawk promotion that drew much of the ire from critics. More »

There's more to Medal of Honor: Warfighter's premise than "spot bad guys and shoot them first," apparently. The latest trailer, above, gives a taste of that narrative arc ... and mixes it with lots of shooting and explosions. A little something for everyone, then!

War can be a confusing beast to tame. My time with Medal of Honor: Warfighter during E3 2012 featured as much bombastic action as expected from a war-based shooter, but it also featured another bit of confusion. I was confused as to why I would only get to play one match, but had to watch a 15 minute presentation explaining each class first. And the variety between each class - different damage models and weapon loadouts, and different bonus killstreaks for each - meant for a sharp learning curve once we finally did get into a match. It wasn't the ideal situation, a complex demo on a very tight timetable.

We can't begin to imagine what serving in the armed forces is like, but we couldn't guess it would net vets some sweet gaming perks. A new EA initiative called Project Honor aims to honor fallen vets and their families by basically putting a bunch of licensed stuff into Medal of Honor: Warfighter, and by selling exclusive Medal of Honor-branded items. Proceeds from these specific items will go to "the Navy SEAL Foundation, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and other charities."

In addition to selling special goods, EA will also issue a special "military edition" of Medal of Honor: Warfighter, exclusive to active, reserve and veteran US military. This "military edition" will be sold exclusively through GovX, Inc., and will include special in-game unlocks exclusive to this special edition. You can pre-order it right now ahead of Warfighter's October 23 launch date.
