Pokémon Black and White 2 are easily the best in the series to date and an absolute must-buy for fans. Even if it's been ages since you've picked up a Poké Ball, there's no better time to jump back in and start catching them all.

...Black and White 2 represent a perfectly adequate, even addictive sequel that falls a bit short short of its full potential. Then again, at some point, a giant, flying, solar-powered pirate ship shows up and freezes whole cities with an ice laser. So... take the good with the bad.

Ultimately, what I took away from Pokemon White Version 2 was this: that the series, much like the monsters that call it home, desperately needs to evolve. Nintendo and developer Game Freak have just about exhausted the same, tired concepts, and it'll be interesting to see where Pokemon goes when it makes a proper appearance on 3DS.

The Good
Training and battling are as enjoyable as always - Fun optional activities - Plenty of in-game Pokemon to catch spanning all gens.

The Bad
An incredibly weak plot, even for Pokemon - Some of the layout changes are for the worse - You've played better versions of this before - An overabundance of low-level Pokemon make the game too easy.

If you're seeking a deep, portable RPG, regardless of whether you’ve ever thrown a Poké ball in your life - get this game, as it’s one of the crown jewels of the genre on the DS hardware. And finally, if you've played Pokémon before and want to experience the richest experience the series has to offer - look no further than Pokémon Black 2.

...Pokémon Black and White 2 has given me a new perspective on the series. For the first time in years, I'm ready to put aside the steady grind of raising the perfect monster and really delve into what the world of Pokémon has to offer. A world that feels larger and more interesting than ever.

With Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2, developer Game Freak has finally decided to stop beating around the bush and give us a "true" sequel instead of a Pokémon Platinum-esque expansion pack. The series is better for it too, even if the much touted emphasis on storytelling remains largely superfluous.

Set two years after the events of the original Pokémon Black and White, it features a new silent protagonist, a new rival, and a handful of new gym leaders. More importantly, there are new Pokémon - or should I say, old Pokémon. Unova is now rife with Pokémon from previous generations - a welcome sight for fans of the series. It makes the world of Pokémon feel bigger and more connected than it already is, and makes the Unova Pokémon feel like they're "part of the family."

Disappointingly, the returning Pokémon aren't the only familiar component. As usual, Black 2 and White 2 rigorously follows the badge/Elite 4 formula that has long since worn out its welcome but will never go away. What a pity that Game Freak didn't use this opportunity to experiment a bit with the formula and trim down the usual rote badge quest (or make it entirely optional). As a franchise, Pokémon can be at once really smart and innovative, and annoyingly set in its ways.

I know that is a common complaint about Pokémon these days, but it has been earned through years of Nintendo and Game Freak sticking to the same formula. Black and White Version 2 has a title that is usually reserved for sequels that adds new features and expand the experience, but that isn’t the case with Black and White Version 2.

Better than Black and White, but lacking their freshness. A cracking swansong.

It kept me playing into the wee hours of the morning when I was a much younger man. It drove me to acquire each iteration of the game since, hoping to rekindle that manic motivation. I've found it again in Pokémon Black and White 2.

With even more new content to be found once the Elite Four are defeated, including the option to change the difficulty setting, this is an excellent addition to the franchise. The only gamers who won’t enjoy it are the ones that aren’t into Pokémon in the first place.

Who says Pokemon never changes? Until recently, the franchise's story wasn't much more than an afterthought. Its main virtue was its consistency - you could always count on an evil organization showing up to destroy the world for no real reason at all. With Pokemon Black and White, a sliver of change was added to adjust the formula and pointed the series toward the possibility of more deft storytelling.

That trend continues in Pokemon Black and Pokemon White 2, which takes the time to examine some of the consequences of the previous game. The somewhat deeper story isn't the only new element either. The franchise's first ever numbered sequel brings with it a few other interesting trends, which are apt to continue once the Pokemon series leaps into the Nintendo 3DS market.

Nintendo is bringing the Pokemon series all the way into the modern era of gaming, with free launch DLC for this October's Pokemon Black and White Version 2. Of course, you can guess as to the nature of the content, as these are still Pokemon games.

Playing the DS sequels between the Oct. 12 launch and Nov. 12 allows you to get the "Mythical" Pokemon Genesect through the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection in the US. Genesect is a Bug/Steel-type Pokemon supposedly discovered as a fossil. It appears happy to be alive.

Along with this news, Nintendo released screens of the "Black Tower" and "White Treehollow," areas exclusive to their color-coded counterparts, where players can battle high-level Pokemon in randomized maps.

- each Pokémon has a single pre-designated ability
- there’s no way of changing what this is
- some Pokémon are capable of having one of two pre-designated abilities
- the ability is chosen at random when you encounter the Pokémon in the wild
- during breeding, the baby Pokémon’s ability is now dependent on its mother
- if the mother is a dual-ability type, the baby has an 80% chance of inheriting that ability
- this gives the baby a 20% chance of inheriting the other ability that the mother doesn’t have
- you can now 100% guarantee that your Pokémon will inherit a nature from one of its parents
- to do this, give one of the parents an Everstone to hold
