#stickjockey Twenty-seven million dollars is a lot of money. But it's not significant. Not in the case of the Madden monopoly lawsuit. In fact, I'm struck by how meaningless all of the terms are in its settlement. More »

#madden The shrewdly conceived "virtual" Twitter feed that will supplying news updates in Madden NFL 13's new unified career mode may be fully branded, and use the real names of real NFL insiders, but neither are supplying the actual content. Back in April, I was told that EA Sports hired one guy whose job was to write all of the Twitter content. More »

#madden Justin Tuck, the defensive lineman for the New York Giants, got sick of getting jerked around by the facemask last year, so he had the helmet maker Schutt fashion ... that, which practically assures he won't get facemasked in the coming year. Madden NFL 13 released a screenshot today showing that, yep, it's in the game. More »

#madden This screenshot isn't new but it is revealing. Kurt Warner last played in the NFL in the 2009-2010 season. Of the 24 players on the "Canton Greats" roster, he was the last to retire. And here we see Madden NFL 13 touting his return to the league in the game's new "Connected Careers" mode. More »

#madden The debut of Madden NFL's new suite of career modes—called "Connected Careers"—seemed to be drowned out by the noise of E3 and by the announcement that same day of the game's new real-time physics engine. That's a gameplay enhancement gamers could easily understand. Connected Careers wasn't so easily reduced, and as such, its debut sounded like Madden was getting rid of some bread-and-butter game modes. More »

#madden f you can sit up straight and squirm in your seat at the same time, I did when I got the news Madden NFL's creators revealed they were going to go for it this year, with their "Infinity Engine" offering real-time physics. It is a long overdue feature, something seen even in a striver title like Backbreaker two years ago. But the potential for embarrassing glitches in the YouTube age—just ask FIFA 12—seemed an order of magnitude greater for something as heavily scrutinized as Madden. More »

#madden It's true. A real-time physics engine will debut in Madden NFL 13. The wait is over, the disappointment is over and along with it, the era of animation-based gameplay in one of the most visual of sports video games. More »

Taking the stage during EA's annual E3 press conference, GM of American Football at EA Sports, Cam Weber, highlighted the major new addition to the Madden franchise: the Infinity Engine.

The Infinity Engine was designed to incorporate more dynamic animations and collision detection into Madden NFL 13. "Pre-determined outcomes - they're history," Cam said. "Now with the Infinity Engine, I can regain my balance after contact and fight for a few more yards. The Infinity Engine changes the outcome of every single play."

On top of that, Connected Careers mode combines aspects of franchise, online franchise and superstar modes, adding RPG elements and social networking functionality to Madden NFL 13.

Once again, the cover of a Madden NFL game is misleading, prominently featuring a person who is not John Madden. Instead, we get Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions wide receiver. Johnson was just revealed on ESPN2 as the winner of a fan vote, which pitted him against Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in the final round.

Whether this is good news to you depends on whether you support the Lions, and whether you believe in the "Madden Curse."
