Crysis 3 having high-end PC specs is about as eyebrow-raising as Cliff Bleszinski posting a photo of a courting game studio. Nonetheless, EA has published the shooter's minimum, recommended, and hi-performance system requirements for your perusal.

For starters, DirectX 11 support is a minimum, which means Windows XP isn't on the guest list. Also minimums are a 1GB graphics card and dual core CPU, with EA detailing Nvidia GTS 450 & Intel Core2 Duo 2.4Ghz (E6660) and AMD Radeon HD5770 & AMD Athlon 65 X2 2.7 Ghz (5200+) as example minimalist Intel and AMD setups respectively.

The full list of specifications is after the break.

After watching six solid minutes of Crysis 3‘s “The Fields” campaign mission, I can pretty safely say that I don’t play Crysis like Crytek plays Crysis. I tend to spend most of my time invisible, skulking and striking with my trusty shotgun. Which might sound like the most counterproductive thing since weight-loss soda, but there’s nothing else quite like super-speed sprinting away, re-cloaking, and slowly but surely picking off increasingly confused baddies one-by-one. In this video, however, Crytek takes a much more, er, forward approach.

Though the tale of Prophet, the guy underneath the nanosuit, will conclude with Crysis 3, Crytek is hardly ready to call it quits on that universe. Cevat Yerli, CEO and President of Crytek, says it "doesn't mean it's the end of the franchise." In fact, Crytek is already in the initial stages of developing the next Crysis game.

"There can be literally tonnes of titles out there within the franchise," Yerli told Eurogamer. "Unlike Far Cry, this time around we feel very flexible about Crysis." Yerli says that calling the next game Crysis 4 "would be misleading" since it would "imply the story just moves on" after Crysis 3.

"We do have a plan for a F2P version of Crysis, but how this looks and when this will be done, whether this is the next one or the next next one, is to be decided," Yerli added. "But we have a very clear picture of how this will look in a transitional period where retail and free-to-play can coexist for one title."

Don't worry, there's still a mode in there you can play if you don't have all that pre-order junk.

Pre-orders of Crysis 3 get upgraded to the Hunter Edition, which includes the following multiplayer perks: Predator Bow, Recon Arrow, Hunter Nanosuit Module, a level 5 XP headstart and three exclusive dog tags. This is on top of the free digital copy of the original Crysis already announced.

The Predator Bow allows firing while cloaked and the Recon Arrow is a long-distance projectile with "advanced optical recognition," which sounds like something we heard during our last eye exam. The Hunter Nanosuit Module removes all suit sounds while moving and muffles footsteps, like an invisibility cloak for the ears.

Of course, Crysis 3 pre-orders get a free download of Crysis for Origin, Xbox Live or PSN, according to pre-order platform.

Crysis 3 producer Mike Read has been talking about the new modes for the upcoming game, and you can see them in action below. I’ve no real idea how popular the Crysis multiplayer modes have been over the years. I’ve played all of them, but, well, I can’t ever remember anyone talking about them after release. Mods yes, but vanilla multiplayer? No. Anyone out there actually play it? What are we missing?

And, ah, this makes me laugh, it shouldn’t really, but “it’s an adrenaline rush you’ll want to experience again and again,” he says with an unconvincing smile, and “lampposts can also be used as weapons.”

Anyway. Crysis 3 is out in February.(more…)

#crysis There's been glimpses of Crysis 3's competitive online modes out there already, but this latest video gives a bit more detail on what's in store for the sc-fi threequel. The invisible predator aspect of Hunter Mode looks fun but it looks like the mech-jacking in the Crash Site Mode might be one of the more fun things that you'll wind up doing in Crysis 3. More »

More footage from the weekend’s Eurogamer shindig. Crysis 3′s ‘infection type multiplayer mode, Hunter, is shown in a new video, demonstrating the Museum of Modern Art map. I’m not sure if everyone else already knew this but the Crash Site mode from Crysis 2 is back as well. That’s all about reaching and securing a location on the map and made for some interesting use of space in the previous game. Both are explained and shown in the video below. The Hunter mode does seem rather weighted in favour of the hunters, perhaps making it an indictment of the killing of living things for sport. Those poor operatives, fighting invisible enemies, don’t stand a chance.

EA bestows us with a new Crysis 3 trailer to remind us the game is coming out next year, and that some people have some nice things to say about it. All of which is lovely. EA also sends us a few screens of its 'Hunter' multiplayer mode, and they are certainly very shiny.
The third entry in the sci-fi shooter series is coming to Xbox, PS3, and PC in February 2013. That gives you plenty of time to read Richard's preview of the Hunter mode.

I should clarify that headline a bit. At very few points would I say that I managed to get sneaky in Crysis 3 mutiplayer. Sneakiness, however, was certainly the point. EA had two multiplayer modes on display at Gamescom this year, Crash Site and Hunter.

Crash Site was also featured in Crysis 2 and, for all intents and purposes, is king of the hill. Two teams - 6v6 on console, 8v8 on PC - chase down and defend "pods," accruing points for standing near one. After a certain amount of time, the pod explodes, another is deployed elsewhere on the map and the cycle repeats. The pods themselves house two portable shields that aid in defense, and there's also the Pinger, a massive controllable mech that can help in either assaulting or defending the pod. Beyond that, however, the mode is pretty standard.

Far more interesting is the Hunter mode, which should be familiar to any FPS player that has ever played a game of "zombies."

Among modern videogame story structures, “The hunter becomes the hunted” is a pretty big one. Crysis 3, however, is embracing the lesser-known but perhaps even more emotionally resonant “The hunter becomes the hunted, but then gets killed and respawns as the hunter – who then hunts the other former hunters who are now being hunted.” In short, they, sir, are being hunted. So basically, it kicks off with two cloak-happy nanosuit supersoldiers attempting to prevent 14 Cell commandos from reaching an evac point. Then chaos ensues, lives are lost, and the cycle of reincarnation is set to “fast forward” and “hilarious irony.”

#crysis Well, not the best way possible. I don't see any Jesse Ventura skins in this trailer. But it shows the second-best thing about the original Predator: the tension and excitement that results from a team of dudes trying to escape a jungle while an invisible killer stalks and murders them. The overgrown NYC biosphere is strangely beautiful in Crysis 3, even though, as packed with the ruins of civilization as it is, it's also simultaneously depressing. Of course, that's not even taking into account all the gunfights.

Woo! It’s almost like playing the game! Ah, sorry, yes: the possibilities for mockery when a scripted shooter chooses to promote itself via a trailer in which you just have a couple of choices and then you let the rest of it play out are basically pretty mean. So I won’t go there, and instead point out how pretty the ruined jungled New York of Crysis 3 is. Yep, it’s super pretty! It’s not the first game to feature a future-New York taken over by jungle, of course, but this time you get a bow and arrow! The trailer shows off some neat features aside from prettiness, of course, including weapon modification and shooting people in the head. That always goes down well.(more…)
